In the liturgy it is the whole Christ (Christus Totus) who acts, Head and Body. As our High Priest he celebrates with his body, which is the Church in heaven and on earth. How does the Church on earth celebrate the liturgy? The Church on earth celebrates the liturgy as a priestly people in which each one acts according to his proper function in the unity of the Holy Spirit. The baptized offer themselves in a spiritual sacrifice; the ordained ministers celebrate according to the Order they received for the service of all the members of the Church; the bishops and priests act in the Person of Christ the Head ( CCC-USCB # 233 & 235). People loved the parables of Jesus. They were little homespun stories which had a strange, spectacular, or perhaps weird twist. In these notes, I have, often quoted a United Methodist minister whom I knew in a former assignment. We were having an ecumenical Holy Week service, and he was called upon to give the Benediction. He started out aurigeur, with the Aaronic blessing from Number 6. Ho hum. Everyone knew what was coming. Yawn. He said, May the Lord bless you and keep you... may the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you... Everyone had heard it zillions of times before. But then he gave the twist. He concluded by saying,...and keep you on your toes! I ve never forgotten that! Probably no one else has forgotten it either. He took what was ordinary and gave it a twist which burned it into our memory. I imagine that is what Jesus did with the parables. He started out with little predictable stories, and he gave them a new twist. And that was why people loved them --- and remembered them! Today s parable might be predictable: It s a story of a man who hires laborers at different times. But Jesus gives an unexpected ending: The owner paid everyone the same wage! We can only imagine the possibilities of various settings for this parable. First, let us presume that Jesus told it in the neighborhood of Jerusalem. Pharisees were present. So also were common people. We don t know if any reformed prostitutes and tax collectors were there, but Jesus had been preaching that the kingdom of God was open to them, too. In such a context, the parable would have an impact: The Pharisees held the common people and sinners in contempt. The Pharisees knew that they had labored in the Lord s vineyard long and hard. They would be rewarded. But the common people heard the unexpected twist: They would receive the same reward as the Pharisees! The key to salvation was not when one received grace or when he was converted; the key was the fact that he turned toward God and away from a profligate life. Another imaginable context might be the problem in the primitive Church between Jewish Christians and Gentiles. Paul had been accepting Gentiles into the Church without making them become Jews first. Peter and the Council of Apostles at Jerusalem (c. 50 A.D. see Acts 15) accepted this practice. But some Jewish Christians resented it.

After all, they had the heritage of the patriarchs from Abraham on; they had scrupulously practiced the Torah given by Moses; how could pagans be treated as their equals? Again, the unexpected ending applies to them: The Lord chooses to be generous; he elects to reward the Gentiles with entry into the kingdom just as he rewards those who have served him from the beginning. Still another imaginable context might be the spiritual problem of those who come late to salvation. We often dwell on the fact that they may be insincere or that deathbed conversions are probably not real conversions. On the other hand, suppose the condition of a person who, very late in life, receives the grace of conversion. He is conscious that he has wasted much of his life in dissipation. Despair over his many sins may be a great temptation: How can even an all-loving God forgive my sins? The answer is the parable: Those who come last are rewarded the same as those who worked the entire day. The Lord is merciful! The final statement of the parable was once a saying of Jesus in a different context. It has been added to the parable, and does not seem to fit well. Or perhaps it does: If we consider the second of the above suggested contexts, it would mean that the Gentiles now will gain ascendancy in the Church, whereas the Jews will, unfortunately, be last. As we said above, the point of the parable is that timing is not all-important; sincerity is. The first reading tells us to seek the Lord while he may be found; to call on him while he is near. In other words, when we realize that God is calling us, we respond promptly and generously. We do not temporize, or delay. The virtue of all the workers in the vineyard was that they all responded immediately as soon as they were called! They came at different times, but they all responded promptly to the invitation. When the Lord invites us to grace, we must put aside our old way of life. We must repent of our sins. We must seek to serve him with all our heart. The Lord s mercy is infinite; he is gracious and willing to forgive even when we would not forgive! We might restrict God s mercy, but his mercy is truly without limit. But he expects us to respond promptly. If we fail to seek him when he is near, we may have lost the only chance for our salvation. For the next four Sundays (including today), our second reading will be from Philippians. This is not a problem epistle. Most of the epistles of St. Paul had a problem as their background, a problem which St. Paul solves in the epistle. Philippians, however, is simply a friendly letter written by Paul to thank the Philippian Church for coming to his aid when he was in prison. Although it is often called a Captivity Epistle, the imprisonment is not the same as that reflected in Colossians, Ephesians and Philemon. Very likely the imprisonment of Paul in those letters was at Rome, A.D. Philippians reflects his imprisonment at Ephesus, probably around 57 A.D. There he says he contended with wild beasts. Very likely that is a figurative expression; the wild beasts may have been cruel prison guards. No one came to his aid except the Philippians. They sent food and amenities to help Paul. The apostle writes to them to thank them for their kindness when all the others had abandoned him. His imprisonment had chastened Paul. He is indifferent about imprisonment or freedom, about death or life, Whatever the Lord wants, that is what he wants! If he can serve the Lord by being in prison, so be it! If he can serve the Lord by dying, so be it! He longs to be with Christ; nevertheless, he is willing to endure this present life a bit longer if it will mean the conversion of others. It is rather far-fetched to tie this in to the theme of the other two readings. In each of the Scripture readings, however, we are called to respond to the Lord promptly and eagerly, whenever he calls and whatever he asks us to do. Seek him while he may be found; listen for him; with all your heart strive to do his will; follow him wherever he leads. Before his conversion, St. Augustine used to pray, Convert me to your ways, 0 Lord but not now! This must never be said of us, lest we lose the decisive moment of grace. Providentially, the Lord gave Augustine many more chances. It is not always so. The Lord expects us to respond eagerly and promptly whenever he calls.

To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others. It s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us, Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me. If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/ tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God s Majesty. Ask this question: Would you dress this way before God? You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
