The following is a list of food suggestions: grocery store gift cards of $20-$25, canned pumpkin, yams, corn, green beans, instant mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing & cranberry sauce. Also welcome are monetary donations. Non-perishable items only. Please, no glass containers. Donations will be accepted at the Pastoral Center as well during normal operating hours. Call for Cookies! 5 Our Lady of the Rosary Page 5 Little Italy, San Diego, CA Background of the Liturgy Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time The texts of today s Mass would have us reflect on the relationship between this world and the world to come, between the kingdom of this world and the kingdom of God, or, if you will, between Church and state. The first reading calls Cyrus (the Great) of Persia the Messiah, or the Lord s Anointed! Cyrus was a pagan, but he was an enlightened ruler. He seems to be the first ruler in history to give his people a sort of bill of rights. His empire was widespread and encompassed many different peoples, religions, and cultures. But as much as possible, he gave people local autonomy and self-government. The Persian Empire succeeded the Chaldean or Babylonian Empire. Babylon had destroyed Jerusalem and taken God s people captive. Cyrus released the Hebrews, subsidized their return to Israel, and gave them local government. Little wonder, then, that he is given the superlative title of Anointed by the prophet! Today s reading says that Cyrus s authority comes from God, even though Cyrus did not know the Lord. The Responsorial Psalm echoes the reading. We are not to give to an earthly potentate the glory. Rather we are called always to give to the Lord glory and honor. The implication is that secular rulers and nations must honor the Lord. The gospel is the famous dilemma posed by the Pharisees and the Herodians. These two groups were completely opposed to each other. Yet they join forces to try to entrap Jesus. The Pharisees believed that only the Lord was the ruler of Israel, and that the only legitimate king could be a Davidic king. They hated Roman rule. The Herodians, on the other hand, were completely subservient to Rome. Herod was king by leave of Rome. The two groups hated Jesus more than they hated each other. So they ask whether it is lawful to pay tax to Caesar or not. If Jesus answers yes, he alienates all good Pharisaical Jews, who thought that it was akin to blasphemy to pay the census tax to Rome. If he answered no, then he could be arrested for sedition by the Herodians. He gets off the horns of the dilemma by asking whose image is on the coin. He then states that we should give to Caesar what is Caesar s and to God what is God s. On one hand it solves the immediate problem: If you accept the good things of Roman rule you must pay for them. On the other hand, it does not solve all Church-state problems down the ages. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that the state must promote the common good of all citizens, that it must seek peace and tranquility, and that it must promote the progress of all. All of this, of course, begins with the right to life. And this is the current battleground. When the majority of citizens believed in the sanctity of each human life, and that human life began at conception, there was little problem in the relationship between state and faith. But progress in science has led to some horrific problems. First, in Roe v. Wade, a fetus was not even considered for personhood until viable. At the same time, the right to privacy was read into the constitution. The effect was that a woman might seek an abortion for a variety of reasons, and the state could not intervene. Further, with the development of in vitro fertilization, there are thousands of frozen embryos which will, in all

6 Our Lady of the Rosary Page 6 Little Italy, San Diego, CA likelihood, never be implanted in a uterus. There is the problem of cloning. There is the problem of harvesting human embryos for stem cell research. Who could have imagined the horrible human life problems even fifty years ago? We maintain that human life is the most basic right and must be protected from the moment of conception until the moment of natural death. Questions of life are only part of the problem of the relationship between faith and state. What is Caesar s realm, and what is the realm of faith? Some seem to want to return to kind of theocracy where the state would at all times be subservient to Christian morality. Perhaps we have grown too dependent on government to legislate on moral issues. This does not seem to work anymore. We cry out against courts which seem to legislate; yet we ourselves want them to legislate in reverse to guarantee everything that we mean by the right to life. There is no dialog nowadays. There seems to be no way of bridging the chasm between what we consider atheistic secularism and our moral principles. Today s Mass calls for us to reflect, to pray, and to seek answers in our modern world. Somehow, our society must Give the Lord glory and honor. Somehow, we must recognize that even a secular Cyrus might rule well in the Lord s name. And somehow we must come to realize in the practical order what is Caesar s and what is God s. We should re-read the documents of Vatican II on Religious Liberty. And we should reflect on the principles outlined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Life issues are only part of our problem, but at present they are the biggest part. We shall probably not win by mouthing old slogans, and by highhanded tactics of determining who may and - who may not go to Holy Communion. While firm in principle, somehow we need to enter a conversation with those of good will on the other side. It does little good to call them pro-aborts. Our real problem is deeper than faith. It is philosophical. It concerns the very nature of what is meant by human being or human life. We hold as an absolute moral principle that no one may ever do evil in order that good may come from it; the world does not subscribe to this principle. We hold for an intrinsic dignity of humans, regardless of appearances or usefulness; the world out there seems to hold that a human being is one who is born and who is capable of natural human development. There are frightening implications with such an attitude, some of which we are already seeing. Let us pray that somehow we will come to a solution of our problems of giving to Caesar and giving to God Sanctuary Candle Memorial Our Lady of the Rosary is currently accepting reservations for the memorial votive candles within the church. Two types of candles are available. First, the red sanctuary lamps are available to be lit for a week, with a donation of $75. The second are the altar candles for a Mass, with a donation of $15. The intentions will be placed in the weekly bulletin, and a special card is available at the parish office. To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others. It s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us, Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me. If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/ tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God s Majesty. Ask this question: Would you dress this way before God? You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
