The Church is holy insofar as the Most Holy God is her author. Christ has given himself for her to sanctify her and make her a source of sanctification. The Holy Spirit gives her life with charity. In the Church one finds the fullness of the means of salvation. Holiness is the vocation of each of her members and the purpose of all her activities. The Church counts among her members the Virgin Mary and numerous Saints who are her models and intercessors. The holiness of the Church is the fountain of sanctification for her children who here on earth recognize themselves as sinners ever in need of conversion and purification (ccc-usccb # 165). Sherry Thurston (619) Background of the Liturgy All Souls Day Consideration The observance of All Souls Day is really the Catholic Memorial Day. On this day and throughout the month of November, we remember our dearly departed in prayer, offering Masses for the repose of their souls and making visits to their graves to pray for them. These observances not only benefit the dead, for in praying for them we exercise our own faith and belief in the resurrection at the end of time. We are therefore blessed when we honor the memory of those dear to us in life and when we pray for them. Today s observance is one consequence of our belief in the communion of all the saints. The bond of baptism binds us all in charity, a bond which death itself cannot break. The liturgical color one chooses for today s Mass can be something of an ideological lightening rod. The legitimate options given in the liturgical law are white, violet, or black. Those who lean progressive usually prefer white, while those who lean traditional often don the black vestments they have kept hanging in their sacristy closets for this once-in-a-year opportunity. Personally, I ve always favored the color violet for today s liturgy. Not only does my preference reflect a certain instinct respecting in media stat virtu, but I believe there are some very sound reasons favoring violet over white or black. Certainly, one could argue that white should be used today as it is most often used for the celebrations of funerals. We offer today s Mass with the hope of the resurrection for our dearly departed. Furthermore, the white of resurrection may be consoling to some who are in the midst of grief at the loss of someone dear to them. It is comforting to know that with the assistance of our prayers, our dearly departed may soon enjoy the bliss of heaven. White seems most especially appropriate for the funerals of those who lived a long, good life. At their funerals, we are filled with feelings of gratitude of having known them, and for God having been good to them in this life. But it is precisely the presence of grief in our hearts that the color black may strike a certain chord. Something doesn t quite feel right when in our sorrow and grief at the loss of a love one, especially with a tragic and unexpected death, the color white is used. It just doesn t acknowledge our sense of loss adequately. Death, the Scriptures say, is a result of sin and was not intended by God from the beginning. While it is to be embraced with courage and trust, it isn t a natural good. Death is a kind of sacrament of sin, one in which we experience in some ways the spiritual alienation and misery of a life lived apart from God, from Life itself. To be happy about the deceased s nearness to heaven may be pastorally too much to expect for those whose

6 Our Lady of the Rosary Page 6 Little Italy, San Diego, CA loss is still fresh (no matter how long the death may have occurred). The color black expresses this dark, painful residue left in the hearts of those who were wounded by a death in the family or among close friends. The reality of death befits the color black. Violet may be the color that rightly balances the sense of hope on the one hand, and pastoral sensitivity to those who mourn on the other. Violet, as used in Advent, is a color of hopeful expectation. It expresses quite well the inbetween state we the living and the departed are in. Between our individual death and the end of time, our resurrection will not occur. And until we ourselves die, we shall be separated from our loved ones who have already departed into the next life. Our celebration of All Souls Day, I believe, should also strike this balance between hope in the resurrection and, at the same time, recognize, acknowledge and even affirm the grief felt by those left behind. We Catholics are known for our moving celebrations of funerals, for we do not fear or eschew the rituals that help us negotiate our way in faith through the pain that conies with death. It seems to me, therefore, our observance of All Souls Day should take into account, these very same concerns. Our Catholic faith is a great consolation when we have to experience the death of a loved one. Background of the Liturgy All Souls Day Consideration cont... merit eternal life. This passage affirms the belief that those who live a good life will be protected by God in the next: they will experience no torment and will have peace. A consoling thought for our loved ones who lived a virtuous life. Romans 5: 5-11: For those of us who have not lived a perfect or nearly perfect life, this passage from Romans is consoling. In it, we are assured that Christ didn t die solely for the just, but for the ungodly, for sinners. We shall be saved from God s wrath because of our justification (being made right with God); having been reconciled by Christ s death (being made one with God), we shall be saved. It is precisely in.the fact that, here and now, because we have already been justified and reconciled through Christ, we shall be saved. We do not need to pretend that we are not sinners; God s love even extends into us, sinners. John 6: 37-40: This passage comes from the Bread of Life discourse. On the one hand, believers are already given to the Son and come to him and are not cast out because they already have eternal Life. On the other hand, they will be raised up on the last day and will not be cast out. John places both a realized and future eschatology side by side in this passage. The already and not yet go together. The Christian has the assurance that our encounter with Christ in this life through the sacraments is not something that will be cast away at death but will be consummated beyond death. Christ promised, and we can hold him to it after death. Readings for the day: On this day, any-reading may be chosen from the Masses for the Dead. What follows is a commentary on the standard readings used on this day. Wisdom 3: 1-9: Here in this pericope from Wisdom we have evidence from the Old Testament in a belief in the afterlife (contrary to the Sadducees). The Book of Wisdom asserts the immortality of the just and righteous, not a general immortality. In our Christian perspective, those who have been made just by the Wood of Christ, and who continue to live in accord with that sanctification, Readings for the Week of November 5 Sunday MAL 1:14B-2:2B, 8-10; 1 THES 2:7B-9, 13; MT 23:1-12 Monday ROM 11:29-36; LK 14:12-14 Tuesday ROM 12:5-16AB; LK 14:15-24 Wednesday ROM 13:8-10; LK 14:25-33 Thursday EZ 47:1-2, 8-9, 12; 1 COR 3:9C-11, 16-17; JN 2:13-22 Friday ROM 15:14-21; LK 16:1-8 Saturday ROM 16:3-9, 16, 22-27; LK 16:9-15 Next Sunday WIS 6:12-16; 1 THES 4:13-18; MT 25:1-13

To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others. It s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us, Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me. If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/ tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God s Majesty. Ask this question: Would you dress this way before God? You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
