When they find the gold which they are searching for they are overwhelmed with great joy. All their efforts have paid off and had value and meaning for them. The story of Zacchaeus life in our gospel this Sunday is similar to those miners of gold who successfully found this kind of treasure. Like the miners Zacchaeus too exerts his effort to dig into humility by climbing-up the Sycamore tree just to see Jesus when he passes by. He doesn t care whether people will laugh at him or will be scandalized by what he is doing. He takes the risk of being scrutinized, criticized, ridiculed and rejected by his fellow dignified people. The gospel describes Zacchaeus as a wealthy man and a tax collector. Therefore, he has position in their society and probably he is well known and respected by everybody. Wanting only to see Jesus passing by from a distance, he gets to see him closely not only from the sight of his eyes but also from the sight of his heart. Having Jesus Christ in his home and in his heart Zacchaeus is overwhelmed with great joy. He allows this great joy from Jesus to shine brightly in his life so that he could now see the type of lifestyle he had lead and the sins he had committed. And he declares Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four time over (Lk. 19:8). He found the great treasure of his life and that is having Jesus with him. Like Zacchaeus, if we allow and accept Jesus to stay in our house (i.e. our heart) then he will give light to our life too so that we can see clearly the unnecessary things in life that need to be corrected, removed or abandoned and he may declare to us Today salvation has come to this house (Lk. 19: 9). Amen

There will be three dining areas: the lower hall, the patio room, and the tent behind the hall. Seating is on a first come first served basis. In the upstairs hall are many mini events happening: Cash Raffle-$5.00 per chance, 5 for $20.00 There are seven chances to win this year, top prize is $500. Santa s Workshop Raffle 15 baskets will be raffled. Buy a $1.00 chance and place it in front of the basket you would like to win. Homemade Cookies and Cannolis are available for purchase to enjoy at home. Country Store Where you can spin it to win it. Children s fun area. Relax at the bar. Plus more. New This Year Curbside Pick-up This year you may call ahead, pre pay by credit card, and pull up in front of church, and your dinners will be delivered to your car. Call Between Noon and 8:00 pm on the day of the event. Order the number of Adult and Children s dinners you would like. Give a 15 minute window for you pick-up. Pay on the phone with your credit card (no payment accepted curbside). You will be given an order number. Pull up in front of church at your time. Have your name and number ready for the curbside volunteer. Walk up, and carry out service is also available as always. Valet Parking This year valet parking will be available in front of church. The service is being provided through the Little Italy Association. The price is $9.00. Parking Limited free parking at the south lot of Washington Elementary School. The entrance is on Date Street, between State and Union Streets. ACE Parking at Cedar and Kettner, $10 (at time of printing). These services are new this year, so please be patient with any delays that may occur. We are striving to make this event enjoyable for everyone!

Our Lady of the Rosary church established a small adoration chapel to allow you to spend more time with Jesus in the Eucharist. Commitments for adoration begin at, but not limited to, one hour per week. Adoration chapels are a great blessing for parishes and it is a way for you to enter more deeply into your faith. The best starting point to become more Christ-like in your daily life is to spend more time with him. You will gradually be transformed and experience unexpected blessings. You will become more who God made you to become and advance more surely along that path as you become transformed through your faithfulness to the graces you receive.

5 Our Lady of the Rosary Page 5 Little Italy, San Diego, CA All Saints Day Tuesday November 1st All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses will be at 7:30 am, Noon, and 7:00 pm. The Mother of Perpetual Help Novena will follow the 7:00 pm Mass. All Souls Day Wednesday November 2nd On All Souls Day, three Masses will be celebrated: 7:30 am, 10:00 am, and Noon. The 10:00 am Mass will honor all of the departed parishioners of the past year. At the 7:30 am and the noon Masses, your loved ones will be remembered. You will find an envelope where you may enter the names of your loved ones to be remembered, and return in the collection basket, or at the parish office. Louis Class on the Life of Jesus Every Wednesday at OLR What can a study on the life of Jesus do for you? Come to Fr. Louis class and find out! Becoming disciples takes ongoing formation. Wherever you are on that road taking this class is sure to be beneficial. The Life of Jesus class meets in the Parish Hall at 7:00 pm. First Friday with the Gorettis November 4th, Adoration and Confession at 5:30 PM, followed by Mass at 6:30 and some Praise and Worship. Padre Pio Devotions Monday, November 7 th The Padre Pio Group will meet at 6:35 pm in the Church for Recitation of the Rosary with Mass at 7:00 pm followed by Prayers & Benediction. Anyone is welcome to join us in Padre Pio Devotions on the First Monday of the month. Our Lady s Gifts will be open in the evening for this event. Stop! Don t Leave! Homebound Eucharist Ministry Our Homebound Eucharistic Ministry is designed to bring the Blessed Sacrament to the homebound. 6 Our Lady of the Rosary Page 6 Little Italy, San Diego, CA THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME BACKGROUND OF THE LITURGY Little things mean a lot. Today s Mass readings seem devoted to the lesson that God is infinitely greater than the greatest of his creation, yet he shows his greatness by mercy, his tender love of the least of his creatures. The first reading is a beautiful prayer from the deutero-canonical book of Wisdom. The whole Universe is but a drop in the bucket to the Lord of all. The all-powerful God could destroy us for the least sin, but he does not He shows his greatness by giving us time to repent, to return to his mercy. The Responsorial Psalm echoes this theme: The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness. The Lord is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. The gospel continues the story of Jesus journey to Jerusalem, passing through Jericho. Zacchaeus was little in every way. He was short in stature. He was little in his moral life; he had been a corrupt tax collector. But he wanted to see Jesus. He climbed a sycamore tree. (Is this an indication that the mean little people try to overcompensate by pretending to be great?) Jesus calls him to come down: He calls him to humble himself and to repent. Zacchaeus comes down. He repents. Jesus has dinner, at his house. Everyone is scandalized that the Lord would eat at the house of a sinner. But Zacchaeus proclaims his penitence: He restores whatever he has defrauded. He pays back four-fold for any whom he has injured. We may ask ourselves where we are in all this. Are we willing to forgive those who are truly penitent, or do we hold pious grudges? Will our attitude attract people to the mercy of the Lord who is infinitely great, but who tenderly forgives the most insignificant of sinners? The second reading, as usual, does not fit the theme of the other readings. But without too much violence, we can see that it is a prayer that we will always help people to be worthy of their calling. God never forgets anyone or anything that he has made; therefore we need to turn to him for mercy. We must live in hope: The Lord will return in glory. Meanwhile, let us continue to live as his holy people. To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others. It s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us, Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me. If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God s Majesty. Ask this question: Would you dress this way before God? You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
