Under the mantle of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we grow as a people of God following Jesus, celebrating the Eucharist, living apostolic service, continuing faith formation and Marian devotions. 5 Our Lady of the Rosary Page 5 Little Italy, San Diego, CA Eucharistic Adoration at OLR Your time will be rewarded COME AND CELEBRATE WITH US Our Lady of the Rosary church established a small adoration chapel to allow you to spend more time with Jesus in the Eucharist. Commitments for adoration begin at, but not limited to, one hour per week. Adoration chapels are a great blessing for parishes and it is a way for you to enter more deeply into your faith. The best starting point to become more Christ-like in your daily life is to spend more time with him. You will gradually be transformed and experience unexpected blessings. Sanctuary Candle Memorial Our Lady of the Rosary is currently accepting reservations for the memorial votive candles within the church. Two types of candles are available. First, the red sanctuary lamps are available to be lit for a week, with a donation of $75. The second are the altar candles for a Mass, with a donation of $15. The intentions will be placed in the weekly bulletin, and a special card is available at the parish office. Padre Pio Devotions Monday, November 6 th The Padre Pio Group will meet at 6:35 pm in the Church for Recitation of the Rosary with Mass at 7:00 pm followed by Prayers & Benediction. Anyone is welcome to join us in Padre Pio Devotions on the First Monday of the month. Our Lady s Gifts will be open in the evening for this event. 6 Our Lady of the Rosary Page 6 Little Italy, San Diego, CA Background of the Liturgy Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time At the time of Jesus, Pharisees believed that the entire Torah was eternal and unchangeable. It was the model and the purpose of all creation. All things were made for, through, and unto the Torah. The Torah was delivered to Moses in time, in the thirteenth century before Christ, but the Torah was eternal. Although this was so, not everything in the Torah was of equal importance. Thus the question of the Pharisee in today s gospel: What is the greatest commandment? In Matthew, Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18: The greatest commandment is to love God above all. But then he gives the second greatest: Love neighbor as self. Love is not a feeling or emotion. Love is an attitude, reflected in the way we live and act. Thus the first reading gives specifics about love: Don t oppress the alien. If you lend, don t act like an extortioner. If you accept a cloak as a pledge, return it before sunset. This particular section of Exodus gives a lot of specifics about our rela tionship to others. The way we act shows our love. Our society is quite different from that reflected in Exodus, but our basic principle must be the same: We respect others and treat them as we want to be treated. The root of our respect is that we first love God. Throughout the Gospel, Jesus con stantly reminds us that we cannot say we love God (whom we cannot see) unless we love our neighbor (whom we can see). The Epistles of John remind us that anyone who says he loves God while not respecting his neighbor is a liar. Further, we cannot say we love God if we do not observe what the Lord has taught us. So what are we to say about those who claim to love God but who never go to Mass or use any flimsy excuse for missing Mass? It is painful for the Confessor to hear that a young person has missed Mass on Sunday. When the priest inquires if he has any reason, the reply is often I had a ball tournament. Conversely it is often very edifying when a penitent confesses missing Mass, and (when questioned further) tells how much time and effort he/she spent in trying to find a church. The question is: If we say we love God, do we really put ourselves out to worship him on the Lord s day? And we might take our love of God further: Do we come to Mass at the last minute without any preparation or reflection? Or are we serious enough about our weekly obligation that we prepare the Scripture readings and reflect on them? Do we treat the Lord s Day as the Lord s Day? True, it is a day for family and recreation, but first of all to grow more fervent in our relationship with God. The second reading is a reflection on modeling. If we have good models, we want to imitate them and become like them. St. Paul reminds the Thessalo nians of his behavior among them: He was not a burden to any, but worked with his own hands. The Thessalonians became imitators of him. Similarly, if Catholics are good models, people will follow the way of the Lord. To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others. It s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us, Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me. If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/ tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God s Majesty. Ask this question: Would you dress this way before God? You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
