In this Sunday s Gospel Jesus disciples did not recognize him immediately even though he called out to them children, have you caught anything to eat? They said no. They only recognize him after they witness the miraculous catch of fish. So they proclaim it is the Lord. They prove to themselves that no one can hinder them, even the power of the Sanhedrin, from proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ and believing that it is the Lord by saying to the high priest who ordered them to stop proclaiming the name of Jesus the Christ who rose from the dead we must obey God rather than men. So rejoice! Be happy! If you will be found to suffer dishonor, rejected and insulted for the sake of the NAME because It is the Lord. Amen. To Him alone can the words of the Psalmist be applied in full truth; this is the door of the Lord where the just may enter. (Ps118: 20). *Google Misericordiae Vultus to learn more about the Jubilee Year of Mercy message from Pope Francis.

BACKGROUND OF THE LITURGY Third Sunday of Easter Many scholars think that, today s gospel is a doublet of the story that occurred in the beginning of Jesus public life, the call of the first apostles. In that incident, Jesus taught the people on shore from a boat and then asked the disciples to put out into the deep for a catch. Peter objects that they had worked all night but had caught nothing. Nevertheless, at Jesus command, he obeys. The catch is huge; their boats almost sink. Both incidents have a miraculous catch of fish. In both, Peter acknowledges his own unworthiness. In both, Jesus gives Peter a special place in the kingdom and in the apostolic band. Today s gospel adds some important details: There are 153 fish. The number is obviously symbolic. Perhaps the
6 Our Lady of the Rosary Page 6 Little Italy, San Diego, CA best explanation is that this is the number given by ancient icthyologists for the number of species of fish in the world. If so, the symbolic meaning would be that the disciples are sent to catch the whole world. Another important detail is Jesus three questions to Peter: Do you love me?. This is an obvious reversal of Peter s three-fold denial of Jesus in the Passion story. Here Jesus gives Peter a special place: Feed my lambs...feed my sheep. Jesus also indicates what sort of death Peter will endure. He stretches out his hands, the meaning is crucifixion. Ancient traditions say that Peter was crucified upside down on Vatican Hill. Whether this is so or not, it is historically (and archeologically) certain that Peter was buried in a pagan cemetery outside the arena of Nero on Vatican Hill. From 150 A.D. there are witnesses who speak of the tropaeum or funeral monument of Peter on Vatican Hill. About 320 A.D. the Emperor Constantine erected the first basilica over Peter s grave. It was replaced in the 16th century by the present St. Peter s Basilica. Directly under the high altar is the grave of St. Peter. One can see the excavations (called the Scavi ) there. In the general Easter theme of Mystagogic Catechesis the message of today s Mass seems to be giving one s life for Christ. In the first reading, the apostles are brought before the court. The high priest states that strict orders were given to the apostles that they were not to speak in the name of Jesus. Peter proclaims that it is better to obey God rather than men. The apostles rejoice because they are found worthy to suffer for the sake of Jesus. The second reading speaks of the glory of heaven. The Lamb is worthy to receive blessings, honor, glory, and thanksgiving because he has been willing to suffer and to die. His sacrificial death is accepted by the Lord. Many People think that Revelation was written to console Christians who were dying in the persecution of Domitian. They wondered why they should suffer if the Messiah had come. Revelation gives them a vision of glory but not before there is suffering. Colossians 1:24 says, I fill up in my body what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ for the good of his body, the Church. Doctrinally, nothing was lacking in the sufferings of Christ; they were infinitely salvific. But the Lord desires us to share in the fellowship of his sufferings. First century Christians suffered for a variety of reasons. In Roman culture, Judaism was recognized as a legitimate religion. As long as Christians were considered a Jewish sect, they were protected. But if (as happened around 80 A.D.) the Jews condemned them, by that very fact they became outlaws and were considered atheists by Rome. Nero could blame the fire of Rome on this outlaw group. All kinds of evils were attributed to them. The sufferings of Christians in our times are different. True, there are sufferings in some places for the religion itself. Muslims and Hindus have tried to kill and destroy Christianity in some parts of the world. But our suffering in this country is different: We are condemned as right wing and reactionary because we uphold the sacredness of life. The only good Catholic in our society is one who does not publicly uphold the teachings of Christ on human dignity, marriage, divorce, and the other social teachings of the gospel. We are called to stand for the truth, even when it is not popular. We should count it a joy that we are worthy to suffer for the sake of the Name. Finally, what if the Lord asked us, as he did Peter, Do you love me?. Would our lives testify that we do? Our Lady s Gifts Located in the Pastoral Center building. Enter from parking lot. To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others. It s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us, Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me. If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God s Majesty. Ask this question: Would you dress this way before God? You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
