This expression indicates first of all the common sharing of all the members of the Church in holy things (sancti): the faith, the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, the charisms, and the other spiritual gifts. At the root of this communion is love which does not seek its own interest (1 Cor. 13:5) but leads the faithful to hold everything in common (Acts 4:32), even to put one s own material goods at the service of the most poor this expression also refers to the communion between holy persons (sancti); that is, between those who by grace are united to the dead and risen Christ. Some are pilgrims on the earth; others, having passed from this life, are undergoing purification and are helped also by our prayers. Others already enjoy the glory of God and intercede for us. All of these together form in Christ one family, the Church, to the praise and glory of the Trinity (CCC # ). 5 Our Lady of the Rosary Page 5 Little Italy, San Diego, CA Background to the Liturgy How the mighty have fallen! Last Sunday, we had the gospel of the primacy of Peter. He is the rock; to him were given the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever he binds or looses will be bound or loosed by heaven. But in today s gospel selection, Jesus calls him a Satan! Why? Because Peter did not want anything bad to happen to Jesus; he wanted him to be the victorious, triumphant, non-suffering Messiah who was expected. Theologically, Peter believed that nothing bad could possibly happen to the Lord s Anointed. But perhaps we may see a very human message in this reading and in the other readings of today s Mass. We do not want bad things to happen to good people. We don t want hurt or suffering. We want everything to turn out perfectly, and for everyone to live happily ever after. But what happens when things go wrong? How do we react? We show our faith best of all in how we act in adversity. It takes little faith to believe in God when everything goes our way; it takes a great deal of faith to trust God when everything goes wrong. Our first reading is from Jeremiah. Things looked promising during some of the years of Jeremiah s prophetic ministry. He was prophet during the time of good King Josiah of Judah. Josiah was one of only two descendants of David who were worthy of his throne. It had not always been so; in Josiah s early years, he too, was indifferent to the covenant. But around the year 621 B.C., a scroll of the Law was discovered in the Temple. Scholars believe that this scroll was the substance of the present book of Deuteronomy. Apparently this version of the Law had been brought south to Judah when Israel was overrun by the Assyrians around 731 B.C. It had collected dust all those years. As the scroll was read to Josiah, he wept. He realized how far he had departed from the way of Yahweh. He made Deuteronomy the basis of a great religious reform. All looked well for Judah, for Josiah and for Jeremiah. But the reform was short-lived. Josiah was killed. The reform ceased. People went back: to their ways of corruption and of idolatry. Jeremiah was given the unhappy task of telling his nation that it had become so corrupt that, it would be destroyed. He counseled surrender to Babylon. For this he was accused of treason. This is the setting of today s first reading: You duped me, Lord, and I let myself be duped... everyone mocks me... I say to myself that I will speak his name no more... Jeremiah was unhappy with the message which he was called to proclaim. It was fine to follow the Lord when all things were going well. But now that he was-the object of scorn and wrath, how could he continue to be aprophet? He wanted to keep quiet in order to get some peace of soul. But the message of truth burned within him; he could not keep quiet! (The rebuke of Peter by Jesus in Greek is hupage opiso mou. This is ambiguous. It can be translated -- as it is most often as Get behind me, satan. But it can also be translated Get back in line, satan. The latter is gentler, and may fit in with the context that it really was a temptation to Jesus to be a crossless Christ. Therefore he tells Peter to get back in line with God s plan.) What happens when things go wrong? We can try to quit. We can give up. We can shake an angry fist at God. But these things won t wash! If we are honest, humble, and realistic, we must simply acknowledge that we are compelled to follow the Lord in bad times as well as in good. Jeremiah followed the Lord when everyone thought he was great; he must now follow him when his name had become accursed. Like the rest of the apostles, Peter thought of the Messiah as a triumphant figure who could never be
6 Our Lady of the Rosary Page 6 Little Italy, San Diego, CA defeated. The Messiah would reestablish the kingdom of Israel. He would establish his throne in Jerusalem. He would destroy the Lord s enemies and bring perfect justice and peace. He would put an end to all suffering and to death, and the dead would rise. It was only a matter of time until Jesus declared himself and did all these expected things. But after Peter s confession that Jesus was the Messiah, Jesus said that he was going to suffer and die! That just didn t compute! Impossible that Messiah should suffer or be defeated or die! So Peter argued. Jesus is exasperated and called Peter a Satan. Satan means tempter. Very likely it was a temptation to Jesus to be the kind of Messiah the people expected. A triumphant and non-suffering Messiah would surely be much easier than a suffering one. Just do a few miracles in order to compel belief and to destroy the Romans; it would be so nice. But it was a temptation! Jesus is God become fully human. He must bring about the kingdom by proclaiming the truth. He must stand for truth and for justice even when he foresaw that he would be rejected, crucified and killed. The truth was that God wanted service, and not to be served. He wanted humility and not, haughtiness. He wanted the emptying of self rather than its exaltation. The kingdom was not to be one of grand show, but of humble service. He showed this by washing disciples feet. He showed it by his own humble life. He showed it by all his paradoxical words: He who humbles himself will be exalted... The last shall be first... Unless the seed falls to the ground and dies, it shall not live... Greater love than this no one has, than that he should lay down his life for his friends... It is always a temptation to seek glory and honor, and to avoid the real way of the Lord. Thus Peter was a tempter. It would be easy to follow a triumphant Messiah. But Jesus called the disciples and calls us to follow him even to the cross. We must follow him even when he is rejected, ridiculed and finally crucified. So what happens when we don t get our private miracle? What happens when things go wrong? What happens when we seem to be alone? Will we serve the Lord even then? Then is when we prove our true faith. The second reading urges us not to conform to this age, but to be transformed by God s spirit. The apostles urge us not to give in to this world. Instead, we must be molded by God s grace so that we shall seek his will in all things even when things go wrong. In the old catechism days, we learned that we should be so sorry for our sins that we would endure any evil, including death itself, rather than commit another sin. When things go wrong, and when we are tempted to give up or to rebel, we need to think of this: Our faith is proved most of all when we are called to sacrifice. The Lord calls us to take up our crosses and to follow him. He does not promise us happiness in this life. He promises that we shall be able to cope, and that we shall find meaning, and that we can have peace. But perfect joy must await eternity. What does it mean to us to be able to take up our cross? Are we really willing to suffer anything for the sake of Christ? Jesus calls us to true discipleship; he wants us to be loyal at all times. He has not duped us, for he made it clear that his followers must be willing to take up their cross in order to follow him. If we do, he promises us a crown of glory. To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others. It s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us, Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me. If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/ tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God s Majesty. Ask this question: Would you dress this way before God? You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
