One of our common prayers to God is that, we always be in good health. Some others are watching carefully of their diet and do exercises just to maintain their good health conditions. But in spite of careful watching of the diet and doing exercises yet we still get sick of an unexpected illness or sickness. And so we want to be healed from it, so we normally go to a physician who can help us. We look for the greatest and best physician. The greatest and best physician is being introduced to us in our readings for this Sunday. And it is proven by the personal experience of the victims of the unexpected illness of leprosy; Naaman from our first reading and the ten lepers in our gospel. They experience the healing power of the greatest doctor no other than God himself. In our first reading God heals Naaman through his instrument of water of the Jordan River. In the gospel God heals the ten lepers in the person of the incarnate word Jesus Christ the second person of the Holy Trinity. Here we can spot the close connection of the river Jordan and Jesus Christ. Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in this River. Therefore, we have the assurance now that in our physical and spiritual illnesses only God can give us an immediate healing if we only have faith in him. Faith is God s requirement to us so that whatever we ask from him may happen. Remember what Jesus says in our Gospel to the Samaritan leper who thanked him stand up and go; your faith has saved you (Lk. 17:19). So if we are physically and spiritually sick let us go to our physician Jesus Christ the Son of God and receive healing from him. Amen

6 Our Lady of the Rosary Page 6 Little Italy, San Diego, CA TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME BACKGROUND OF THE LITURGY The Bible has many metaphors for sin. Lameness is one. To be virtuous is to walk according to the commandments of God. If a person cannot walk, he is therefore a sinner. Blindness is another: to be virtuous, according to the Pharisees, a person had to read the Torah. If he could not read, he obviously was doomed. Leprosy is a vivid metaphor for sin. The leper is unclean before society; before God, this uncleanness, is seen as sin. (Obviously, we should not take the metaphor for the reality. So blindness, lameness, and leprosy are not really sins. But they are great symbols especially in the cleansing miracles of the Scriptures.) The first reading is the end of the Naaman story. Naaman was an important Syrian general, but he was a leper. An Israelite slave girl said that it was too bad he didn t live in Israel where there was a prophet who could heal him. Naaman assembles a large quantity of precious items and is sent with a cover letter from the king of Syria to the king of Israel requesting a Cure. The Prophet Elisha tells the king to send Naaman down to him. Elisha does not even go outside; instead he sends word that Naaman should go and wash seven times in the Jordan River. Naaman is angry and refuses to follow the order. He is finally persuaded by his retinue. On coming up from the Jordan, his flesh is healed. Naaman proclaims that there is no God but the God of Israel. Symbolically, sin is destroyed even for a foreigner by a quasi-sacramental washing. God s power to forgive extends even to the Gentile. The Gospel is the cure of ten other lepers by Jesus. He tells them to show themselves to the priests (for verification). Only one of the ten returns to Jesus to thank him. And he is a Samaritan! Remember the hatred between Jews and Samaritans. This former sinner, and outcast Samaritan is not only cured (forgiven), but he is doubly blessed by Jesus for his grateful response. The theme, then, of this Sunday is the horror of sin and the beauty of forgiveness. But it is more than this: It is the gratitude that all should have when they are forgiven their sins. A deeper meaning is to realize that we are all sinners. We are Samaritans. We are Syrians. Although we have many metaphors for sin, the New Testament word for sin is Hamartia. (It s pronounced hah-mahr-tee-ah. This means missing the mark. The image is of an archer who is shooting for a target. If he misses the target, it s a hamartia. From all eternity, God has set a target for us. Many things are common in the target: We are to practice the virtues; we are to keep the commandments; we are to follow the Lord. But each of us has his own individual, customized, target. When we miss that target, we are sinners. We need to reflect on the target God has set for us. How well are we trying to hit the target? How zealously are we trying to become the person God intends us to be? When we become aware of the meaning of sin, we must also realize the forgiveness of sins. The price of our forgiveness is the suffering and death of Jesus. The Lord is infinitely merciful; this is shown in his willingness to go to the cross for our salvation. The Lord remains ever faithful to us, for he cannot deny himself. Let us, then, acknowledge our sins and seek the loving forgiveness of the Lord each day.

To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others. It s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us, Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me. If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God s Majesty. Ask this question: Would you dress this way before God? You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
