4 SCRIPTURE READING Genesis 1:1-2:4 Jane Hunyadi Old Testament pg. 1 (blue) 1 (red) ANTHEM What Wondrous Love Is This arr. Richard Robert Rossi The Women of the Sanctuary Choir SCRIPTURE READING Job 38:1-18 Leader: The word of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God. Old Testament pg. 484 (blue) 595 (red) MOMENTS WITH CHILDREN *HYMN We Cannot Own the Sunlit Sky tune: How Can I Keep From Singing We cannot own the sunlit sky, the moon, the wild-flow rs growing, for we are part of all that is within life s river flowing. With open hands receive and share the gifts of God s creation, that all may have abundant life in ev ry earthly nation. When bodies shiver in the night and, weary, wait for morning, when children have no bread but tears, and war-horns sound their warning, God calls humanity to wake, to join in common labor, that all may have abundant life in one-ness with their neighbor. God calls humanity to join as partners in creating a future free from want and fear, life s goodness celebrating. That new world beckons from afar, invites our shared endeavor, that all may have abundant life and peace endure forever. MESSAGE Rev. Martha Morales and Susie Holway, United Methodist Women President Taking Care of the Fragile Web of Life PRAYER OF CONFESSION Reader1: Sin is the refusal to acknowledge our dependence on God for life and breath and all things. Reader2: God of life, we confess that we often forget that we are utterly dependent upon you and interdependent with the rest of your creation. People: Forgive us, O God, and inspire us to change. Reader1: The prophets Isaiah and Hosea said: The land lies polluted under its inhabitants. The beasts of the field, the birds of the air, even the fish of the sea are dying. Reader2: God of mercy, we confess that we are damaging the earth, the home that you have given us. 4
5 We buy and use products that pollute our air, land, and water, harming wildlife and endangering human health. People: Forgive us, O God, and inspire us to change. Reader1: Chief Seattle said: Whatever we do to the web of life we do to ourselves. Reader2: God of justice, we confess that we have not done enough to protect the web of life. We have failed to insist that our government set standards based on precaution. We allow companies to release dangerous toxins that destroy fragile ecosystems and harm human beings, especially those among us who are most vulnerable. People: Forgive us, O God, and inspire us to change. All: God of compassion, today we acknowledge our dependence upon you and our interconnectedness with the whole web of life. We open our eyes, ears, and hearts to the pain of the earth, that we may be open to your truth, see your way of hope, and walk with courage in your way. Amen. PRAYERS FOR THE WORLD AND THE PEOPLE OF GOD (prayer list on pg. 7) THE LORD S PRAYER (Former Methodist Church from UMH No. 895) Our Father (or Mother, God, Creator, Abba), who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
