Celebrate the stories of gifts given well. Watch. Something is happening. Leader: Speak to us, O God. Help us to stay awake through the night terrors. Be with us, keeping watch over the chaos. People: For soon a child will be born, a light will arrive in the darkness, a new season arrives. God is about to do something new. 2

*THE PEACE Leader: The peace of Christ be always with you. People: And also with you! Greet one another in the name of Christ. 4 PRAYER OF CONFESSION We are waiting, O God. We are waiting in line, waiting for the phone to ring, waiting for the doctor to call, waiting for our ship to come in, waiting for another chance, waiting for the end of words that hurt and deeds that harm, waiting for the other shoe to drop, waiting for just the right gifts. We are waiting. But what we do while we wait reveals our character. While we are waiting for something to happen, others look to us to make good things happen. While we wait for the One who is to come, we are to act by word and witness on behalf of the Child. Be with us in our waiting and forgive us for not waiting well. Amen. WORDS OF ASSURANCE PRAYERS FOR THE WORLD AND PEOPLE OF GOD (prayer lists found on pgs. 8-9) THE LORD S PRAYER (Former Methodist Church from UMH No. 895) Our Father (or Mother, God, Creator, Abba), who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS UMH No. 33ff Angela Chen, Bernadette Flameno, Lyssette Trejo pgs COMMENDATION AND WELCOME Pastor: Through baptism, you are incorporated by the Holy Spirit into God s new creation. Members of the family of God, as God s children, baptized into the family of God, I ask you to include these persons in your love and care. People: We are thankful for each of you. You are a blessing! We have already made a place for you in our hearts and prayers, and we ask God to be with you always. We rejoice to welcome you as part of our church family, and look forward to all that we will learn about God from you. With you, we renew our covenant faithfully to participate in the ministries of the church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness. May all of our efforts be pleasing to God. Amen. 4

ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS ANNOUNCEMENT OFFERING OUR GIFTS, TITHES, AND PRESENCE/PRAYER CARDS Please sign the attendance card found in this worship guide. Write prayer requests on the reverse side, and place the card in the offering plate. OFFERTORY Come, Redeemer of Humankind J. S. Bach *OFFERTORY HYMN standing; everyone sings. SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION THE GREAT THANKSGIVING FOR ADVENT, musical setting A UMH No Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Leader: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Gracious God, creator of heaven and earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, and spoke to us through your prophets, who looked for that day when justice shall roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream, when nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 5

Leader: Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ, whom you sent in the fullness of time to be a light to the nations. You scatter the proud in the imagination of their hearts and have mercy on those who fear you from generation to generation. You put down the mighty from their thrones and exalt those of low degree. You fill the hungry with good things, and the rich you send away empty. Your own Son came among us as a servant, to be Emmanuel, your presence with us. He humbled himself in obedience to your will and freely accepted death on a cross. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection, you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. When the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, 6

Leader: poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith: Leader: Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and juice. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. People: By your spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, Gracious God, now and for ever. BREAKING OF THE BREAD SHARING THE BREAD AND THE CUP Since all stand in need of the divine grace made available in this sacrament, Holy Communion is available to all who recognize their need for this grace. Please dip the bread carefully into the chalice of non-alcoholic wine and consume. Gluten-free crackers are available from each server at your request. It is customary to respond to the reception of bread and wine by saying, Amen. Persons needing to be served in their seat should notify an usher. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION *HYMN People, Look East UMH No. 202 pg. 13 7

*BENEDICTION POSTLUDE (music that helps us make the transition to serve the world) Toccata on Hyfrydol Gordon Young (You are encouraged to be seated as the cross recesses, and listen for how the Spirit touches us through music. We understand if you must quietly leave. Go in peace.) *The Great Thanksgiving for Advent is from The United Methodist Book of Worship, 1992 The United Methodist Publishing House, all rights reserved, used by permission. Music license available in the church office. ADVENT begins the Church s worship year. We are not quite sure when the church began the season of Advent. There are scripture readings for Advent published in the 6th century, which suggests, of course, that the practice started earlier. Some suggest Advent started in Spain in the late 4th century. The earliest idea seems to have been that since one needed the 40 days of Lent to be ready for Easter, then one must also need preparation time before Christmas. As we celebrate Advent this year, we ll also be celebrating the 200th anniversary of Silent Night by singing one verse each of the Sundays of Advent after Passing the Peace. WE ARE GLAD YOU ARE HERE! Claremont United Methodist Church is a welcoming and reconciling congregation, affirming its ministry with the whole family of God regardless of age, race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, economic situation, or marital status. Claremont United Methodist Church believes its diversity is a blessing through which persons are strengthened to love and serve. WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE MINISTRY of Karen Lull as our organist this morning while Katie Ledsinger is on vacation. Sunday worship is usually recorded on CD each week. If you d like a copy, a donation per CD is accepted. Contact the CUMC office, churchoffice@claremontumc.info. Thank you! Large Print Bulletin available ONLINE at claremontumc.net/cumc/newsletters/. Wi-Fi ID: C.U.M.C.3 and password: cumcmain. Remember your attendance card. OUR PRAYERS PLEASE keep the church office updated on your loved ones. THE ALTAR FLOWERS this morning are given by Clay and Julia Barrett in celebration of their second wedding anniversary on December 3. NEW TO THE PRAYER LIST: Eliza Alejandro; All Affected by the Anchorage Earthquake; Cheryl Armstrong, Barbara Elving, & Family (death of Cheryl s brother, Barbara s husband, John Elving, on November 22, 2018); Churches in Tijuana in Ministry with the Migrant Caravan; Laura Lilley-Coles; Sam Shankle (Ethan Rincon s friend); World Council of Churches Countries of the Week: Myanmar, Thailand. 8
