UMH No. 94 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below: Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Leader: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Leader: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Loving God, creator of heaven and earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, and spoke to us through your prophets, who looked for that day when justice shall roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream, when nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn. People: Sung response 4
5 Leader: Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. Your Spirit anointed him to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, and to announce that the time had come when you would save your people. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ate with sinners. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. At his ascension you exalted him to sit and reign with you at your right hand. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. 5
6 People: Sung response Leader: Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, Loving God, now and for ever. People: Sung response BREAKING OF THE BREAD ADMINISTRATION OF THE HOLY COMMUNION Since all stand in need of the divine grace made available in this sacrament, Holy Communion is available to all who recognize their need for this grace. Please dip the bread carefully into the chalice of non-alcoholic wine and consume. Gluten-free crackers are available from each server at your request. It is customary to respond to the reception of bread and wine by saying, Amen. Persons needing to be served in their seat should notify an usher. During Communion Everyone Sings the Following Hymn: TFWS No As We Gather at your Table pgs UMH No. 624 Bread of the World UMH No. 164 Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life UMH No. 632 Draw Us in the Spirit s Tether TFWS No In Remembrance of Me 6
7 PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION *HYMN This Is My Song UMH No. 437 pg. 17 *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE (music that helps us make the transition to serve the world) Prelude (from English Suite No.2, BWV 807) J.S. Bach (You are encouraged to be seated as the cross recesses, and listen for how the Spirit touches us through music. We understand if you must quietly leave. Go in peace.) *The Call to Worship is from The United Methodist Hymnal, no. 746, 1989 The United Methodist Publishing House, Nashville. Used by permission. The Great Thanksgiving for The Season After Pentecost is from The United Methodist Book of Worship, no. 70, 1992 The United Methodist Publishing House. Used by permission. Music license available in the church office. WE ARE GRATEFUL for the ministry of the Rev. David Lull this morning leading worship with the Rev. Martha Morales, as our liturgist and celebrant over Holy Communion. Rev. Mark Wiley is away on family leave, celebrating the birth of his granddaughter. ALL OF KATIE S MUSIC for the month of July is based on Baroque dance forms, which primarily originated in the 17th-century court of Louis XIV. These French dances are a clear precursor to modern ballet, and have inspired numerous composers across the centuries. In the Baroque era, composers began writing dance suites, which followed such a codified order that there s an acronym that applies to just about any Baroque dance suite: PACSOG (Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, optional, Gigue). Among these Baroque composers was Johann Sebastian Bach, who wrote nineteen suites for keyboard. Today, we hear the Prelude, Allemande, and Courante from Bach s English Suite No. 2 (BWV 807), albeit slightly out of order. The Allemande is traditionally a slow to moderate dance in 4/4 time, while the Courante is a faster dance in 3/4 time. The Prelude does not follow any dance form; even so, Bach imbues the piece with a dancing, rhythmic drive. It s interesting to note that one of the rectors at the school where Bach worked said that Bach was an omnibus membris rhythmicus : someone with rhythm in all his members. Indeed, rhythm drives almost all of Bach s music; it s not just about his counterpoint. So, please enjoy listening to how the music in both hands intertwine, as well as Bach s ability to make the music dance. WE ARE GLAD YOU ARE HERE! Claremont United Methodist Church is a welcoming and reconciling congregation, affirming its ministry with the whole family of God regardless of age, race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, economic situation, or marital status. Claremont United Methodist Church believes its diversity is a blessing through which persons are strengthened to love and serve. 7
