2 CLAREMONT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost October 14, :30 a.m. As we quietly prepare for worship: Assistive listening devices and large print bulletins are available from an usher. *Indicates invitation to stand as you are able. Children are always welcome in worship; should you need it, childcare is offered during worship. UMH is The United Methodist Hymnal. TFWS is The Faith We Sing songbook. The Order of Worship WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE (music that leads us into worship as God s people) Prelude, Tune, and Ostinato *PROCESSIONAL HYMN Take My Life, and Let It Be Please rise at the organ s introduction; everyone sings. *CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: As we gather this morning, we know you, O God, love us without limitation or conditions. You invite us to accept and value others as you do us. People: But we get distracted. They don t really look like us. They don t act like us. They are too different, too rude, or too weird. Leader: We know you invite us to sing your praises in acts of worship, justice, and mercy. People: But we get distracted. There are too many demands on our time, too much to do to just stay afloat. So we look to our needs, our own survival. Leader: We know you, O God, are with us on our journey and encourage us to follow your path. People: But we get distracted. We focus on our hurts. We linger on things that did not go as we had hoped. We seek comfort rather than the journey. 2 John Eggert UMH No. 399 pg. 6

3 Leader: Distract us, O God, from our distractions. Fill our hearts with your love for others. Inspire us in worship so that we seek to reach out to others. Make us aware of all the ways your Spirit guides us so we will stay on your path. Be our holy distraction from all of life s distractions. Amen. *THE PEACE Leader: The peace of Christ be always with you. People: And also with you! Greet one another in the name of Christ. Join back together when the hymn begins. *HYMN Lead Me, Lord UMH No. 473 pg. 7 Alfred Cramer New Testament pg. 220 (blue) 267 (red) SCRIPTURE READING Hebrews 4:14-16 ANTHEM Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing arr. James Mulholland The Sanctuary Choir Barbara Durost, Interim Sanctuary Choir Director SCRIPTURE READING Mark 10:17-31 New Testament pg. 46 (blue) 56 (red) Leader: The word of God for the people of God. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. 3

We need the comfort and support of our community. With this group, we hope to respond to the needs you or others may have for this kind of support, comfort, and objective information. The theme of the gathering TODAY is Caring for Caregivers. Many of us are, or have been caregivers to loved ones facing Parkinson s disease, dementia, cancer, or other chronic debilitating conditions. We care for them at home or at a distance. But from whom do the caregivers receive the needed emotional, spiritual, and even physical support? We will share some insights in the short informational piece to start the program. Then we will break into smaller groups for discussion.
