2 CLAREMONT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunday Second Sunday after the Epiphany January 20, :30 a.m. As we quietly prepare for worship: Assistive listening devices and large print bulletins are available from an usher. *Indicates invitation to stand as you are able. Children are always welcome in worship; should you need it, childcare is offered during worship. UMH is The United Methodist Hymnal. TFWS is The Faith We Sing songbook. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The Order of Worship PRELUDE (music that leads us into worship as God s people) Elegy Samuel Coleridge-Taylor *PROCESSIONAL HYMN Lift Every Voice and Sing UMH No. 519 Please rise at the organ s introduction; everyone sings. pgs. 8-9 *CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 36:5-10 Leader: Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. People: Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your judgments are like the great deep; O Lord, humans and animals you save! Leader: O God, how precious is your steadfast love! All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings. People: They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. Leader: For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light. People: O continue your steadfast love to those who know you, and your salvation to the upright of heart! *THE PEACE Leader: The peace of Christ be always with you. People: And also with you! Greet one another in the name of Christ. Join back together when the hymn begins playing. 2

3 *HYMN This Little Light of Mine This little light of mine, I m goin a let it shine, (sing three times) let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. Hide it under a bushel? No! I m goin a let it shine, (sing three times) let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. All around the world, I m goin a let it shine, (sing three times) let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. AN AFFIRMATION FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. SUNDAY Leader: The people who lived in darkness have seen a great light. On those living in darkness a light has dawned. (Isaiah 9:2) People: Faith is taking the first step even when you can t see the whole staircase. Leader: This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in God there is no darkness at all. (1 John 4:5) People: Darkness cannot drive out darkness: Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: Only love can do that. We must live together as brothers and sisters or perish together as fools. Leader: The light has come into the world and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:5) People: Don t ever let anyone pull you so low as to hate them. We must use the weapon of love. We must have the compassion and understanding for those who hate us. We must realize so many people are taught to hate us that they are not totally responsible for their hate. But we stand in life at midnight; we are always on the threshold of a new dawn. Leader: If we walk in the light as God is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the life blood of Jesus, God s Son, will cleanse us from all sin. (1 John 1:7) People: Those who are devoid of the power to forgive are devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies. Leader: Perfect love casts out all fear. (John 4:18) People: People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don t know each other; they don t know each other because they have not communicated with each other. Leader: Arise! Shine! Your light has come. The glory of the Lord rises upon you. (Isaiah 60:1) People: Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. continued > 3

4 Leader: Beloved let us love one another for love comes from God, and God is love. (1 John 4:7-8) People: I have decided to stick to love. Hate is too great a burden to bear. We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear. Forgiveness is not an occasional act; it is a constant attitude. Leader: You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before others. (Matthew 5:14, 16) People: Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. A person who won t die for something is not fit to live. No one really knows why they are alive until they know what they d die for. Leader: No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16) People: God s allowed me to go up to the mountain, and I ve looked over. And I ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. So I m happy, tonight. I m not worried about anything. I m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. SCRIPTURE READING Isaiah 62:1-5 Carolyn Harrington Old Testament pg. 692 (blue) 847 (red) ANTHEM Christ Whose Glory Fills the Sky Healey Willan The Sanctuary Choir SCRIPTURE READING John 2:1-11 Leader: The word of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God. New Testament pg. 93 (blue) 113 (red) MOMENTS WITH CHILDREN *HYMN I Have a Dream printed on page 5 4

Part of the human experience is facing death, dealing with loss, and working our way through grief that can, at times, threaten to overwhelm us. We need the comfort and support of our community. With this group, we hope to respond to the needs you or others may have for this kind of support, comfort, and objective information. If you would like to be part of Life Goes On or if you d like more information, please contact Rev. Martha Morales: marthacumc@gmail.com, or (909) WAYS TO GET INVOLVED CUMC CHURCH COUNCIL ADOPTED MOTION: We, the members and friends of Claremont United Methodist Church, embrace the statement from the Ebony Bishops in the United Methodist Church to the Council of Bishops on the Resurgence of Racism in the United States. We affirm its subsequent adoption on November 6, 2018, by the full Council of Bishops. We accept its invitation and call to dismantle racism. With intentionality we will continue and invite others on a journey to educate ourselves, reflect, pray and act around white supremacy, white privilege, and internalized racism. We support the statements recognition that until Anglo brothers and sisters are free of their racism, and acknowledge their White privilege, none of us will be free. In conclusion, as the community of Ebony Bishops have stated, we also reaffirm our commitment to our baptismal covenant to renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of this world, and repent of our sin. We accept the freedom and power God gives us to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves. The CUMC Church Council adopted the Council of Bishops Statement on December 18, CUMC s Growing Christians class has felt called to support our congregation on this journey. It has established a Dismantling Racism Committee (currently composed of Ardys Hunter, Lois McAfee, Henry Jefferson, Frank Cookingham, and Alex Morales) and perhaps some of you will feel called to join this committee s work to guide our learning journey. LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE IN THE WORLD Send a letter for Amnesty International! Letters for January are on the front desk in the Narthex. Attached to each packet of letters is information on each letter. Please mail the letters by the end of the month. International postage is $1.15 per letter. Thank you! 12
