Congratulations to Jackson Brennecke for becoming an Eagle Scout in a ceremony at our church on September 15th. Proud parents are Andrew & Jessica Brennecke. PAGE 3 THE LINK OCTOBER 1, 2013 FIRE AND TORNADO EVACUATION PLANS Evacuation routes are posted in every room in the church, including the sanctuary. Staff, teachers and ushers are trained on evacuation procedures. Drills will be held periodically. There are several points that we would like to stress with parents. First of all, teachers are accountable for all students in their classrooms and will escort the children and youth to designated destination points. For fires, the destination points will be the parking lots on Slater and Anderson Streets. For tornados, the destination points will be the inner hallways on the 1 st floor and the Catacombs and Shalom Rooms. Parents can meet their children and youth at the destination points. It is preferred that parents not take their children away from their class until the all clear announcement is made, so that the teacher can remain accountable for each child when asked. Parents may stay with their child s class if they wish. If a parent must take their child away from the class, that parent MUST talk with their child s teacher and sign the attendance envelope. On Sunday mornings, evacuation of the people in the sanctuary will be directed by the pastors and ushers. During a fire evacuation, parents should leave the building quickly and not try to go to their child s classroom. Ushers will direct the flow of traffic so that everyone can exit the building quickly and safely. If you have any questions or suggestions, please call Donna at , ext Divorce Care Program will be starting in October. This group meets weekly to help you rebuild your life through video, group discussion and personal Bible study. For more information, please contact Lisa Goyette or Fern Myers. It s an Applebee s Monday September 7th and 21st Come by Applebee s and have lunch, dinner, coffee, tea or dessert and they will donate 20% directly to Lake Orion United Methodist Church. The restaurant prefers no flyers - just let your wait staff know when you order. Thank you for your support!

4 PAGE 4 THE LINK OCTOBER 1, 2013 We re Building Churches!! On Sunday mornings in October, our children will be learning about David and Solomon. In response to the story of how Solomon built the temple in Jerusalem, the boys and girls will be helping to build houses for God not like the Temple that Solomon built but churches in a part of the world that needs churches. Along with all the other children who are using the same United Methodist curriculum, we are joining with the General Board of Global Ministries to build churches in Russia and Eurasia. In that part of the world, there is a prejudice against church organizations who meet in homes or other non-traditional worship places. For the churches of Russia or Eurasia to maintain a productive outreach in the community, they need church buildings and we want to help. Therefore, the children s offering monies for this fall will be used for this purpose. UNITED METHODIST WOMEN AND MEN NEWS Circle of Hope invites all women to join them on Monday, October 21st, 7:00 p.m., in Room 103. The program, Calling to Mission in Our Time, will be presented by Donna Waite. Meditating on the story of Esther, women will discuss how we are called to join God s mission of engaging with women, children and youth locally, nationally and around the globe. So invite a neighbor, a friend, and anyone who has a heart for our Lord and mission, especially with women and children. If childcare is desired, call Donna Waite by Fri., Oct. 18 th at , ext Come To The Well circle will meet Thursday, October 10th at 10:00 a.m. in Room #105. Jean Taylor will present the program and Ruth Lowe will be hostess. Bring a sack lunch. Beverage and dessert will be furnished. Call Ruth at (248) if you will be attending. Sisters in Faith circle will meet Tuesday, October 8th, at 9:30 a.m. in the Shalom Room. Lake Orion United Methodist Men s 5th Annual Golf Outing will be on Saturday, October 12th at Devil s Ridge Golf Club in Oxford. Cost is $55.00 per golfer which includes cart and 18 holes, one bucket of balls for driving range and a lunch ticket. Prizes will be awarded for Men and Women s longest drive, closest to the pin and best team score. Registration begins at 8am and Tee off at 9am. For more information, contact Rob Charlton at or Joe Rowden at You can also sponsor a hole for $40. PAGE 13 THE LINK OCTOBER 1, 2013 COMMON GROUND MENTAL HEALTH TRAINING AT LOUMC ON SATURDAY NOVMEMBER 2, 2013 For anyone interested in becoming certified as a first aid responder to someone that may be experiencing a mental health crisis you are encouraged to attend this very informative and interactive workshop. Common Ground is a non- profit organization that helps people that are having a mental health crisis. This skilled and compassionate group of men and women offer training to the public so that we can learn appropriate things to do and not do if we encounter someone that is having a mental health issue that requires prompt attention. This training is highly recommended for Stephen Ministers, Staff Members, and Community Meals Workers and for anyone from our congregation or community that is interested in learning more. This is a very jam packed day with a great deal of information that will help you be a non-judgmental caring support person to someone that may need help and not know how to help themselves. Training will be in LOUMC Fellowship Hall from 8:30 am to 5:00 p.m. Cost is $75 which includes books, lunch and snacks and a formal certificate indicating completion. This event is facilitated by Stephen Ministry. If you are interested in attending please contact Lisa Goyette at (248) 693, 6201, ext. 202 or at: lisagoyette@lakeorionumc.org. PAGE 5 THE LINK OCTOBER 1, 2013 RED BIRD MISSION TRIP 2013 We have the dates for this year's Red Bird Mission trip. It is scheduled from SUNDAY/OCTOBER 27th to SATURDAY/NOVEMBER 2nd. Some will leave for Kentucky on SATURDAY/OCTOBER 26th and stay overnight at a Day's Inn in Kentucky and then head on into Red Bird the next morning. They like us to arrive early/mid afternoon and this helps break up the trip. This will be our church's ninth year of joining with St. Paul's in Rochester for this mission trip. It is always an extraordinary time, to experience God at work in this extremely poor area of our nation. There are many ways to be of service there and you won't be forced the help re-roof a home if it's beyond your abilities. If you're thinking of making this the year you go to Red Bird, contact Jim Childers or Carol Hermann, and they'll be glad to answer any questions you may have. *********************************************************** RED BIRD BABY SHOWER Please remember to bring all your sweet baby items that are going to Red Bird, Kentucky, to the church no later than Sunday, October 6, everything will be on display that day so you can see what others have donated. The babies say "bless you!" ***************************************************************** project: SHALOM 2013 is October 19th this year. Registration is happening NOW. Please be sure to register soon to guarantee your son or daughter a spot on a team. Also, if you are in need of any kind of home repairs or yard cleanup please fill out a worksite application, which can be found at any entrance of our church building

6 PAGE 6 THE LINK OCTOBER 1, 2013 PAGE 11 THE LINK OCTOBER 1, 2013 Dear LOUMC friends and family, Dragon on the Lake Report The following is a report of what happened at Dragon on the Lake this year for Lake Orion United Methodist Church. On Friday night of Dragon on the Lake, the UMM partnered with Crittenton Hospital, to host the first annual OXLO Help Kids Succeed 5K Run/Walk. Thank you to the planning committee, everyone who worked the night of the race and all those who participated in the run/walk. Thanks to you, the race brought in over $2000 for this ministry that helps school children in Oxford and Lake Orion with school supplies, eye glasses, We hosted an All-Charity Silent Auction in Fellowship Hall during the entire weekend, beginning on Friday evening. Thank you to everyone who donated an item to the silent auction, helped set it up on Friday, supervised the auction during the weekend, called people to come and pick up their items, or bid on items in the auction. Thanks to you, the Silent Auction took in over $1250 this year for our general fund, and $733 combined for the Orion Art Center, Love INC and Common Ground. On Sunday, LOUMC had 2 Dragon Boat Teams who competed in races all day on Sunday. Thank you to all of you who participated on one of the Masterful Methodists Dragon Boat Teams and if you made a donation to one of our Paddlers. So far, the Dragon Boat Paddlers have raised almost $1400. This money will be deposited into our Contingency Fund which is used to help local families through Love INC. Four of our paddlers, raised money to help pay some Medical Bills for a church family. They raised an additional $3400. Our church also supported the Dragon on the Lake event by supervising 2 bounce house style items - whenever they were working right. Thank you to everyone who signed up to help in the Teen Area. This was part of our sponsorship to the Orion Art Center which provided us thousands of dollars worth of advertising and promotions before, during and after the weekend. Now I am very excited about all the money we raised for these worthwhile ministries, but I am equally excited about the presence we had in this community event. On Wednesday night, two days before the race, the race committee delivered a post card to everyone on the race route inviting them to come out and cheer for the runners, offer the runners water or entertain them. AND THEY CAME OUT IN STYLE! Brad Smiles actually had a lady run with him for a while and then she went back to her yard to encourage other runners as they ran by her house. There were so many people who came out of their homes, the runners and walkers were very surprised that this was a first time event. On Saturday and Sunday, event visitors really appreciated our free ice water and a cool place to sit down in Fellowship Hall. I would say that it is safe to wager on the assumption that for many of us our spiritual lives have evolved over time. What we believe and how we live out those beliefs has likely changed due to numerous factors. Life happening is more than likely one of the most significant. I know for one that it would take more than just a newsletter article to share how life experiences have shaped my spiritual journey. However, one of the other factors that have contributed to my faith development has been being a part of small groups. To hear and listen, to be supported and challenged, to be encouraged to live and serve have all led to a greater understanding of what it means to embrace a life of faith AND service. During the month of October and into early November, you (yes you) are being given the opportunity to be a part of such an experience. Together as a faith community, we have created a number of small groups for you to join. There are a number of factors why we have created this opportunity for you (i.e. support, encouragement, development of new relationships, spiritual development, etc.) One of the most significant reasons that we are investing time and energy into the formation of small groups simply put is that we believe that Lake Orion United Methodist Church are a people who have a very strong interest in making a difference in the world. It seems to be quite obvious that you all are not the let s just show up for an hour on Sunday kind of people. On the contrary, it seems that LOUMC are a people who want to figure out how to make faith become a reality through a life of action. Over the course of 6 weeks, beginning the week of October 6 th, various groups meeting during different days and times will initially be working through the resource entitled, Change The World Recovering The Message and Mission of Jesus by Mike Slaughter. If you are interested in being a part of this journey with a small group, please contact Pastor John Ball at john.ball@lakeorionumc.org and we will get you connected with others who are excited to take this journey with you. God loves YOU and so do I, Pastor John Ball Recent thoughts of John

Elementary School Program (Grades K-5) Includes Hands-On-Bible, Rec & Play, Music & Drama, and Family Time Dinner (4:45-7:30 p.m.) PAGE 7 THE LINK OCTOBER 1, 2013 With our 2 Dragon Boats, we created quite a presence over in Green s Park on Sunday. A friend of mine who goes to St. Joes told me the following Monday that all day Sunday, he kept hearing about the Methodists over the loud speaker. It seemed like they were in every race and there was always some funny comment or teasing going on over the loud speaker about Pastor John or Pastor Larry s boats. I think that was because our very own Charlie and Sandy Weaver were sitting right next to the announcer all day watching the races and feeding the announcer little tidbits of information to say. Another good thing about the weekend, was having both of our pastors involved in the Dragon Boat races. This meant that our 40 dragon boat paddlers got to spend 8 hours hanging out with and getting to know both of our pastors and the kind of relationships that can be built in 8 hours is very different than the kind of relationships that can be built at the door on the way out of the Sanctuary or in the few minutes in Fellowship Hall. The depth of conversations in that length of time and in that relaxed atmosphere can go to a whole new level. So, I want to thank both Pastor Larry and Pastor John for being willing to try something new and for working with Aaron to prepare the video sermon. I also want to thank the Worship Leaders, Ron Nordquist and Gina Adams during the 9:15 and Juli Stephens at the 11:00 services for being here so that the pastors could be over at Green s Park. And again, I want to thank everyone who participated in the Dragon on the Lake Weekend. It was a huge success for our church and the whole community. Amy Lieblein, Volunteer Coordinator High School Program (Grades 9-12) Includes Youth Group from 5:27-6:30 p.m. followed by dinner. Field trips and service opportunities available.
