They will happen every other Sunday of Lent (2/22, 3/8, and 3/22) at shortly after 12 noon in the Fellowship Hall. February 22 nd s luncheon will feature Love INC (in the name of Christ), the local agency with which we work in providing for those in need in our community. People from the different Love INC-sponsored ministries will be on-hand to share information about their particular ministry. Many of our own folks are involved, and will be among those sharing. March 8 th s luncheon will highlight the CROP walk. CROP is sponsored by Church World Services (CWS), and monies raised from the walk go to help feed people in this country and abroad. The actual walk doesn t take place till later in the spring (stay tuned for details), but we will use this opportunity to raise awareness and to recruit a good crop of walkers. The last luncheon, on March 22 nd, will be our global emphasis. Rev. Tom Heaton of Mission Guatemala (through whom we are doing our church mission trip this summer) will be here with us! He will give a presentation on the vital ministries of Mission Guatemala, and we will get an idea of how we can be in relationship / partnership with them beyond just the team traveling to Guatemala. It will be an opportunity you won t want to miss. We will receive donations for the luncheons, with any monies above and beyond food costs going toward mission. Hope to see you there!

2 PAGE 2 THE LINK FEBRUARY 1, 2015 Princess Party with a Purpose Princess Parties seem to be very popular right now. Most little (and older!) girls LOVE to dress up like princesses, because it makes them feel so special. Well, our church is going to sponsor a Princess Party on Saturday, April 25 th, but its purpose is so much more than just dressing up and having a good time. Our Princess Party will be a fundraiser for Esthers Children, the organization founded by Emily and Jennifer Sutherland in Clarkston, which opened a Community Center in Recife, Brazil. This center works with girls between the ages of 4 and 18 and their families, providing education and healthy activities with a focus on preventing sexual exploitation and child prostitution in their community. You can visit their website at for more information on their ministries. So while our girls are enjoying their party, they will also hear how they are helping girls in Brazil have safe, healthy and happy lives. You will hear more about the Party in the coming months, but mark your calendar NOW for Saturday, April 25 th, 2-4 p.m. This party will be for children age 3 through 5 th grade, accompanied by an adult. Our mission is to connect people to God, one another, and the world, through engaging worship, spiritual formation, intergenerational family ministries, relational mission, and grateful stewardship. Silent Auction Help Needed As part of the Princess Party, we are thinking about having a Silent Auction that would be open during the party and then again at church the next day. We would like members of our congregation to think about items that we could put in this auction. It could be things that we have or could make ourselves, coupons for services we or others could provide, or even better, items or services that we could attain from area businesses. Be creative and see what you can find! We hope to have a selection of items from low cost to more expensive (from a $5 gift card for McDonald s to a week s vacation at your summer cottage.) Since that day, more than $100 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around Super Bowl weekend into the nation s largest celebration of giving and serving. Through this mission, our church has made a positive difference in Oakland County as we raised almost $7000 over 15 years to provide food for the hungry. Be part of this movement that is sharing God s love with those in need. Please give generously on Super Bowl Sunday, February 1. Every dollar donated will be split between The Baldwin Center in Pontiac and our Monday Night Community Meals, our 2015 Souper Bowl of Caring charities of choice. February is Love INC Month We celebrate Love INC in the month of February. Love INC is in need of the following items for the different ministries that they offer. One never knows when the Lord will call us home. When He does there are those who need to care for the loved ones left behind. Two families were extremely appreciative of the care and generosity of those at LOUMC especially at holiday time. January 2nd the family and friends of Ruth Sims appreciated the Luncheon provided by Marian Middleton, Shirley Bommarito, Trudy Carney, Kareen Olson, Joyce Marker, Patti Kalso, Beth Widgren, Emily Graffeo, Barb Lieb, Karen Craven, Sandy Weaver, Martha Northcote, Linda Nixon, Carol Haley, Jim Pearce, Ross and Sharon Waite and Bob and Judy Muir. January 5th the family and friends of Jane Reynolds appreciated the luncheon provided by Sandy Weaver, Linda Nixon, Shirley Bommarito, Jo Knotts, Marian Middleton, Faye Nordquist, Kareen Olson, Kathy Cavan, Jan Harp, Jeff Noonan, Karen Craven, Beth Widgren, Marilyn Gaskins, Carol Hermann, Emily Graffeo, Barb Lieb, Mary Mansfield, Sharon Waite, Teresa Sirois, Pamela Nichols and Bob and Judy Muir. These people donate and prepare food, set up the luncheon and tables, serve and clean up. As you can see it takes many hands to do this. It is a very rewarding ministry. If you feel you can lend us a hand in any way please contact us. Thank you, Ardis Pearce and Kathy Cavan Dear Pastor Larry, I wanted to tell you what a moving service you provided for Wendy Sylvain. I could see why she enjoyed your church. I wanted to let the church know that Pine Tree Elementary School will be dedicating our new Health & Wellness walking track to Wendy. It will be named Wendy s Way. We plan to build the track this spring which will circle the perimeter of our soccer field. It will be a paved track for school and community use and the approximate distance will be 1/4 mile around. The anticipated cost to complete the track is $18, and we are asking for donation as Bronze Partners ($500 in giving), Silver Partners ($501-$1,999) and Gold Partners ($2,000+). Gold Partners will have their company logo displayed overlooking the track. All Partners will be publicly recognized and all donations are tax exempt. If you would like more information or would like to make a donation, please contact the school directly or contact Dan Martin at dmartin@lakeorion.k12.mi.us. Dan Martin

5 PAGE 8 THE LINK FEBRUARY 1, 2015 FEBRUARY 1, 2015 THE LINK PAGE 5 In Thanks A big "Thank You" to pastor Larry for my hospital visit, and all the cards, calls, prayers and warm wishes after my hip surgery! We are truly blessed to have such a supportive church family. Phil Lavender Dear Church Family, This is to let you know how often I think about all of you. My life is brighter and happier because of my memories of my church family. Thank you for all the prayers and good wishes while I was in the hospital recently. I'm doing much better, and I love visitors at Harbor Chase where I live now. Love, Pat Elliott To All my Friends at LOUMC, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your prayers, cards and good thoughts during my recent illness. As you may or may not know, I had very sudden pains in my lungs beginning about Sunday, December 14. On Wednesday, Carol took me to Urgent Care and they transferred me by ambulance to Crittenton. X-rays and cat scans showed a very large "mass" in one of my lungs. That diagnosis obviously scared us. However, our prayers were answered and the lung biopsy came back negative. The "mass" turned out to be a severe case of pneumonia. A rapid pulse complicated matters during my hospital stay, but I am happy to report I am home, feeling I have been wrapped in the arms of our Savior, and feeling mighty good. The pneumonia has not been kicked quite yet so I am "laying low" for now. LOUMC is a community of caring and loving people, and I have been blessed to have received more than my share of love the last couple of weeks. Thank you so much. Bill Stark Before Alan died he had a chance to cover himself for a nap in a big chair. He really liked his quilt because of how it was made, by whom, and it had the cute critters on it. Thank you all for the pleasure Alan had before he left us. Thank you for all of your prayers. I m sure that our Lord cut him some slack because he went gently to sleep the day after we brought him home from the hospital. Peace was written on his face. Please keep up this wonderful program of prayers and squares. It brought joy to our family when we needed it most. Thank you so much for caring the way that you do. Sandra Craddock United Methodist Women Sisters in Faith will meet on Tuesday, February 10th at 9:30 a.m. in Shalom. Circle of Hope will meet on Monday, February 16 th at 7:00 p.m. in Room 103. Sandy Weaver will present a program on the United Methodist Retirement Community in Chelsea, Michigan. Childcare is available by contacting Donna Waite at or donna.waite@lakeorionumc.org by Sunday, Feb. 15 th. United Methodist Men The United Methodist Men will be meeting on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 a.m. They meet at CJ s in Lake Orion for breakfast. All of the men of the church are invited to attend. United Methodist Men s Pancake Dinner - Don t forget about Feb. 17th! It s the UMM s Fat Tuesday Pancake Dinner Fundraiser, in Fellowship Hall, starting at 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Bring the family, friends and neighbors! What better way to get ready for Lent and Ash Wednesday than carbing up on pancakes and sausage the evening before! Proceeds from the dinner will benefit the Monday Night Paper Products/Cleaning Supplies Ministry. Scouting Transforms Lives! Our church will be celebrating Scout Sunday this year on March 8 th. During the 9:15 and 11:00 Worship Services, we will be recognizing ALL scouts, boys and girls, past and present, as well as their leaders. We encourage all scouts to wear their uniforms that morning. We hope you will be there to help our church family show their support for all the scouting programs and the many ways that they help our young people become the very best they can be.
