1 The LINK November 2017 Page 1 ALL SAINTS SUNDAY will be observed on Sunday, November 5 th during all three of our worship services. The saints we will remember this year are: Nancy Sue Angela, Jerry Austermann, James Bloodworth, Doris Bronoel, Jerry Farstvedt, William Fisher Sr., Shirley Graves, Betty Grube, Sheri Hensley, Harold Johnson, Maxine Jones, Terry Jones, Tina-Marie Kolen, Kara Kulenkamp, Harry Muenker, Charles Chuck Myers, Vicki Newcomb, Doris Reihl, June Rupert, Nancy Sutton, Gerald Jerry Sweetland, Robert Thomas, Norma Walter, Phyllis Wiseman The families of these saints have received personal invitations to be in worship with us that morning, standing as the names of their loved ones are read aloud, lifted in prayer, projected along with their picture in the sanctuary, and as a candle is lit in their memory. It will be a beautiful service including communion, and we encourage you to come and support, with your presence, those families who will be remembering those they have recently lost. 2 Financial Note Thank you to each of you who have made an additional contribution to assist with the current financial situation of the church. The October LINK outlines the information that was presented to the congregation on October 1 st. Please consider your financial commitment to the mission and ministry of the church and your ability to make an additional contribution. SAVE THE DATE! On Friday, November 10 th at 7pm. The Stephen Ministry Team will be holding our yearly fundraiser at Willows Edge Counseling in Oxford. ALL proceeds we raise that evening will go to help pay for counseling for men, women and children that need to see a therapist and do not have insurance or cannot afford the co-pay. For an admission price of just $25 we will be serving appetizers and desserts and will have music. Wine and beer will be available for a donation. Please come and bring your friends for a wonderful cause. Mom, Dads - Looking for a couple of hours without your little helpers in tow? Mother s Morning Out is a child care program unique to United Methodist Churches. Ours is run by our Nursery Director, Jeri Melton, on Tuesday and Thursday Mornings from 9:00 to 11:30am. A great time for you to run errands, schedule appointments, set-up or attend programs, etc. The children receive LOVE + LEARNING, FUN +GAMES. Call Jeri at to set up a date or for questions. Page 2

4 UNITED METHODIST MEN will meet for breakfast at C.J. s on Saturday, November 4th at 7:30am. All men of the church are invited to attend. SCRIP Please think about using the Scrip Program at LOUMC during the upcoming Christmas season to purchase gift cards. We are able to purchase hundreds of gift cards at a discount for you to purchase at face value. Major retailers, restaurants, gas stations, hotels and movie theatres are available in different denominations. Also, the Kohl s gift card can be used to pay your credit card bill. This program benefits many ministries of the church, the General Fund and outreach such as Community Assistance and Missions. LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS Sunday, December 3 at 4:00pm A worship service of hope, encouragement and support for those who are experiencing grief and loss, and those who are struggling spiritually during the Advent & Christmas season. The service will be held in the sanctuary with light refreshments to be offered after the service. SECRET SANTA COLLECTION Stephen Ministry will be collecting monetary donations to help members of our church family that are in need during the Christmas Season. Donations will be collected though Sunday, December 4. Please mark any donations that are turned in as "Secret Santa." Thank you and God Bless! 7 Prayers and Squares Quilt Ministry What is a Prayer Quilt? Can you touch a prayer? Can you pull it close and feel its comfort? You can if it s part of a prayer quilt made by members of Prayers and Squares, The Prayer Quilt Ministry. The idea behind prayer quilts is simple. A heavy thread is used to take stitches through the quilt layers, and the ends are left free to be tied with a square knot. As each knot is tied, a silent prayer is said for someone in special need who then receives the finished quilt. This is not just a gift of a quilt, it is a gift of love and prayer. It is a statement of faith in God and in His power to comfort, strengthen and heal. The Prayers and Squares committee does not decide someone needs a quilt. We only make quilts when someone has specifically asked us to pray for them. The common factor in recipients is that their situation is a long term issue affecting their lives in many ways almost always requiring isolation. This includes not only people recovering from major accidents, but also those with degenerative disease and major disease such as cancer which disrupts a normal life for many weeks or months. Also, aging can cause the crisis, whether it is a loss of vision, mobility or independence. It is essential that the recipient know in advance they are being considered, because we are offering our prayers, not a blanket. There are flyers at each door with a referral form and this should be given to anyone that meets the criteria and is in need of prayer. The completed form may be given to a pastor, the church secretary, or the Stephen Ministry Coordinator. The Prayer Quilt Ministry also has a mailbox available near the church office.
