1 MARCH 2016 NEWSLETTER Kathwood Baptist Church Published March 1, 2016 Touch the World with Your Heart By: Beth McConnell When he was a little younger, Malachi Strum gave me a beautiful hand-painted heart for Valentine s Day. I keep it on my desk to remind me that love comes in many colors. There s a bright green that looks fresh and alive. A brilliant red that exudes happiness and softens to pink. A royal blue that makes its mark and then blends with the others to create new shades and a bright yellow that scoots around visiting with the green and blue, leaving behind a trail of brown. Finger painting. Each a touch bearing the print of the artist. 3 Page 3 Youth Happenings Youth Choir Festival by the Sea Our youth and chaperones will be in Myrtle Beach March 4-6 for the 17th annual Festival by the Sea. They join approximately 300 youth, representing 20 churches, for rehearsals, fellowship, and worship. This is a highlight of the year for both youth and chaperones. Please pray for everyone involved in this special event. Water for Malawi Project Two Broadway Tunes Concerts raised $1,309 toward the building of a well in the drought-ridden African country of Malawi. A Cooperative Baptist Fellowship related agency, Watering Malawi, has built wells, irrigated fields, and brought water to schools over the last ten years. The people of Malawi are being trained and empowered to do the labor and ongoing maintenance required to continue the productivity of these wells. Our Kathwood Youth have undertaken to raise $ to build a well. This is their 2016 project and they are well underway! Thank you to all who supported them through donations and attendance at the concerts. It was very entertaining and well done! We are proud of our KBC youth!! Abraham Study Notes By: Kelly Strum, School Director Thank you, Kathwood! You supported the Abraham study so well! I am so grateful to each of the speakers who shared so authentically from the heart of their faith. We learned so much. I am looking forward to processing it all next night together. For now, may I share with you the concluding remarks in Bruce Feiler s book Abraham that Father Sandy McDonald referenced in his presentation? So what should our Abraham look like? The Abraham I long for would be a bridge between humanity and the divine, who demonstrates the example of what it means to be faithful but who also delivers God s blessing to us on earth. And this Abraham conveys God s grace through his children, through Ishmael, through Isaac, and who then has so much hallowedness left over that he doles some out to all the members of his household and then, to children of his second wife. And this Abraham is perceptive enough to know that his children will not always embrace the fullness of God s blessing and will generally try to squander God s generosity. But this Abraham believes- against all belief- that his children still crave God. They still need the comfort of something greater than themselves, still hold on to some gleam of humanity, still dream of a moment when they stand alongside one another and pray for their lost father and for the legacy of peace among the nations that was his initial mandate from heaven. This Abraham is not Jew, Christian, or Muslim. He is not flawless; he s not a saint. But he is himself, the best vessel we ve got, the father of all.

4 Page 4 March 2016 Newsletter Ladies Tea The Ladies Tea is fast approaching and we hope that all of ours ladies, young and old will plan to attend morning, April 23, from 10:00 to 12:00 noon. We will enjoy spring flowers, a variety of teas and delicious goodies as we bring gifts for the children, ages 5-12, of St. Lawrence Place. The after school program is in need of arts and craft supplies, books, construction and art paper, paints, crayons, colored pencils and chalk, simple craft sets and all kinds of craft sets/projects for children in this age group. Our speaker will give us an overview of the many ways St. Lawrence Place ministers to the children living there. Please plan to come. Sign up sheets will be outside the church office in mid-march. We look forward to this time of fellowship and ministry. Leadership Council Report By: Nancy Brown, Chair As shared in the January newsletter article, Leadership Council is focused on Growth and Stewardship for Our night suppers have been operating at a loss. For 2015 our loss was around $8, and in 2014 the loss was $7, with this information we made the decision to review our night supper options. Working with the Stewardship Committee and Social Team, we have eliminated the staff position of cook. This provides a savings of over $8,000 annually (cook's salary plus travel expense). Another decision was to contract with Lizards Thicket to cater our night meals. A meat, two vegetables, bread and dessert is $6.50 per meal plus tax which comes to $7.15 per person. The charge for night supper has not been increased for several years. We have now increased the weekly meal charge to $7.50 per person with a cap of $20.00 per family. This provides a savings of approximately $7, and a loss of about $ We encourage each of you to come for night supper, fellowship, prayer time and Bible study. Leadership Council is also revising the annual church calendar, reviewing dates for our summer schedule, July 4 cook-out on June 29, and opportunities to connect more with our community. Leadership Council serves as the Personnel Committee. We feel we need a Personnel Committee of at least three individuals that will function to support the personnel of the church and Preschool. This will be discussed in our March meeting. Thank you for your input, prayers and support of our efforts toward effective Stewardship and Growth. Spring is around the corner and we need help sprucing up the church grounds for the Easter services and spring events coming up. We are having a work day on, March 12, from 9-12 noon. We hope that you can help. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us. Bring your gloves, rakes and hedge trimmers.

6 Page 6 March 2016 Newsletter Have you Seen the New Cross? From the Worship Team. We hope all of you have seen the new processional cross that we have been using in our morning worship services. We think that this cross, with its simplicity and beauty, provides a wonderful visual element for our congregation. This cross was given by one of our faithful members who wishes to remain anonymous. On behalf of Kathwood Baptist Church, we would like to extend our thanks to this member. Mission Opportunities Allendale Work Day: Operation We Care Since 2007, CBFSC, in conjunction with local partners, has hosted the Operation We Care Allendale Work Day. The goal of this work day was always to help our partners encourage their local community to work together for their common good. Over the past nine years we ve seen that take place. The first year about 100% of the volunteer work came for CBFSC. Last year, 75% of the volunteer force was from Allendale! That is something to celebrate! You are invited to join us, on our last Operation We Care Allendale Work Day, for a half-day of volunteer service, to be followed by a torch-passing celebration. It is scheduled for, March 19. The cost is $15/person. You can contact the church office by March 14 if you can go or register online at CBF PilgriMissions at Kathwood April 30 Kathwood's Mission Team, along with Pastor Beth, is working with Blake Hart, SC CBF Mission Coordinator, to host a cross-cultural mission opportunity for the CBF churches of the Midlands. The mission event will be from 9:00AM to 3:00PM. The mission ministry will focus on helping families effected by the October 2015 flood. She is a native of India, a seminary graduate, and currently is in the chaplaincy program at Richland Hospital. 7 Page 7 Welcome our Newest Member From her native India, Dr. Sanchita Kisku found her way around the world to Kathwood through her interest in theological studies at the Lutheran Seminary, through her work in chaplaincy and through her friendship with Kelly Strum. Her decision to join Kathwood was based on the friendliness and caring of the people and the level of Bible study she experienced. Sanchita is working in the chaplaincy program with Palmetto Health hospitals and hoping to continue long enough to be able to become a chaplain trainer when she returns home in a few years. Through chaplaincy, Sanchita is able to share the love of Christ to people in need--sometimes with a strong word and sometimes through the quiet presence of just being there. Although chaplaincy is emotionally difficult, Sanchita has found that God's healing love can touch anyone. Including the chaplain. A Note of Thanks Dearest Kathwood, I am so grateful to have you all in my life. Your prayers, cards, calls, considerate support have helped so much. Although I am unable to be there regularly, I love and support all of you at Kathwood. Sincerely, Nancy White Doing Good in the World We all have gifts and talents that make us unique. The tricky part is finding avenues to use these qualities so that they expand and grow rather than remain dormant and hidden from others. Our own Dr. Anne Matthews will be sharing her journey of her service through Rotary International for the Prime Times meeting on, April 5, at 2pm in the Palmetto Health Baptist Auditorium. Anne s work is a living example of the Rotarian mottos of service above self and one profits most, who serves best. However, she declares these projects and leadership roles that have taken her around the world have changed her life giving more meaning and fulfillment than she ever dreamed possible. Dr. Matthews reveals her story in hopes that her message will be a catalyst for others to explore ways to use their qualities in a beneficial way that will be a gift to others. If you would like to attend please call the church office and let us know and we ll let them know how many we have to attend. There is no cost.
