8 8 St. Brigid Church 34 th Sunday in Ordinary Time From The Pastor s Desk Feast of Christ the King WORD OF GOD: Jesus tells a very powerful parable in our gospel this Sunday. The parable relates to how a King will be sitting in glory with His angels and all the people will be divided into two groups: sheep and goats. The sheep on the King's right side are told by the King that they played it really smart during their earthly lifetime. They fed the King when He was hungry, gave drink to Him when He was thirsty, welcomed Him when He was a stranger, took care of Him when He was sick, and visited Him when He was imprisoned. Totally flabbergasted and really bewildered upon hearing all of this, the sheep reply: "What are You talking about, Sire? We don't remember meeting You in any of these situations. How could we have helped You?" The King responds, "All those times you fed and clothed and visited My most insignificant brothers and sisters during your earthly lifetime, you did so to Me." Needless to say, they were immensely surprised at this remarkable outcome! And then the King addresses the goats on His left: "Get out of My sight! Go into the hellfire prepared for the devil and his kind. I was starving, but you did nothing, dying of thirst and you ignored Me, a stranger but you did not welcome Me, naked and you gave Me nothing to wear, sick and imprisoned and you were nowhere to be found." The goats are shocked, stunned and completely dumbfounded. They plaintively plead: "When Sire? When did we ever ignore Your needs?" The King solemnly declares: "In all of those instances when you refused to do anything for the have-nots in your midst, you did not do those things for Me!" Understandably, the goats will be totally mortified by the dire consequences that their lack of charity has brought down upon their heads. So could it be that the sheep kept their hearts in the right place during their earthly passage, and they did not miss many opportunities for helping the underprivileged? Whereas, the goats apparently could not be bothered with the felt-needs of the rabble. Very bad thinking on their part! They truly let their golden chances pass them by. Surely, Jesus does not urge us to take leave of our senses, but He does expect that we seek to help to rectify those situations that are literally crying-out for the milk of human kindness and compassion. Only we ourselves can eternally determine our very own everlasting fate as a sheep or a goat. THE NEW TRANSLATION OF THE MASS: Begins next weekend on the First Sunday of Advent, November 26-27, There will be cards in the pews with the new words of the Mass for our English speaking parishioners to use. Please do not take the cards home with you. Leave them in the pew for the people to use at the other Masses. The cards will remain in the pews until we all know the new words of the Mass by heart. WORDS OF CONDOLENCES: On behalf of the people of St. Brigid Parish, I wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Angie Corral, and all the members of her family, at the passing of her grandson, Mr. Regino Miranda, III. The funeral was held at St. Gregory s Church in Whittier last Monday. Let us pray for the soul of Mr. Miranda, and for Mrs. Corral and her family during this difficult time.
