It begins 4 Sundays before Christmas, and it is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ s second coming, and to anniversary of the Lord s birth. 8 8 St. Brigid Church 1 ST Sunday of Advent From The Pastor s Desk First Sunday of Advent-B WORD OF GOD: Each Advent is to place ourselves in the position of people who are waiting for the coming of the Lord. When you think of it, it's a rather strange thing to do. After all, Christ has been among us in human flesh. God has been revealed. Moreover, Christ is with us still, not least in the sacraments and in the hearts and lives of all believers; so why this season of waiting? I think that it helps us realize, each year, the greatness of what God does for us. This time of preparation helps us appreciate, once again, how Jesus is the embodiment of God's love among us. What a wonderful, generous, initiative from God! By putting ourselves once more in the position of 'waiting', we build up our longing that God's presence on earth may be known more and more. 'Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.' The more we long for Christ, the more we will be able to appreciate the greatness of what God is doing for us in Christ. Here and now, we are constrained by the limits of our earthly existence. There are things we cannot see, puzzles we cannot understand, questions, we cannot answer. But one day we ourselves shall be called into eternity. We remember this too in Advent, for this will be the crossing of a threshold where we shall wait no longer but receive the mercy of Christ and the joy of his presence, when our searching will finally be at an end. As St Paul wrote: 'Now we see in a mirror dimly, but then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand, even as I have been fully understood. So faith, hope, love, abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love' (1 Cor ). Each Advent, we prepare to meet divine love in human form, and by our waiting, we ask afresh that this divine guest may change our lives.
