2 2 St. Brigid Church Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Did you know? What is this Stewardship Festival? Essentially, it is an enhanced Ministry Recruiting Sunday. St. Brigid seeks to provide an annual comprehensive opportunity for parishioners to both be exposed to and sign up for present ministries and organizations in a festival atmosphere. It is based on answering our Baptismal call to carry out the Mission and Ministry of Jesus and Evangelize (bring others to Christ and His Church). It s the third Vocation Call after the Call to Faith and the call to a Lifestyle (Single, Marriage, Religious Life and Priesthood). We are building on the renewal of our Baptismal Promises at Easter, the Mission by Jesus after His Resurrection and before His Ascension, and in fulfillment of our Renewal of our Commitment to the Mission and Ministry of Jesus Christ and the making disciples of all the nations on Pentecost. Why a Stewardship Festival now? Since I became Pastor of St. Brigid in 2007, we have followed up on the efforts of the Archdiocesan Synod of 2003, parish leaders w/fr. Kearns SSJ from to identify the needs of the parish in light of its strengths and to address pastoral leadership in the absence of Josephites in the future. In 2008 we re-registered everyone in an effort to update the facts of our parishioners, to build up ownership in the parish and prepare for the Town Hall Meetings we held in January, the Listening Sessions in March, and the Visioning Session in May, all in We have a Vision of 6 NEEDS & 12 PRIORITIES, some we have achieved, some are in progress and more still to be addressed. Our statistical profile showed us that 20% of our parishioners were involved in parish ministries and many of that 20% (1 in 5) were involved in more than one ministry. Every January since 2008 with the support of the Parish Council and Finance Council we have been educating our parishioners about Stewardship of Time Treasure and Talent. In the Fall of 2009 our Advent Season and Annual Parish Retreat Day in December we focused on the Biblical Values of being a good Steward. In January 2010 we shared the Principles of Tithing, keeping us focused on the Mission and Ministry of Jesus Christ. In order to continue what we are doing and to address our needs and priorities, we need involvement by each and every parishioner. Besides taking a seat at Mass on Sunday or praying daily, every member of the parish ought to be able to say how they are serving God in this community(by giving our time, treasure, and talent). It should be freely offered in response to the generosity of God s Blessings and His Call to each of us to sustain and spread His Church. Sooo How are you serving God in this community? 4 4 St. Brigid Church Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time PARISH NEWS STEWARDSHIP Weekly Collection - (Envelopes, Loose, Building & Maintenance) 10/03-27 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday Average Needed $ 7102 $ 7,000 Please note that our collections have been significantly less than the Average needed. Thanks to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, who gave us $23k in Together in Mission Funds we were able to pay our bills and cover some of the unpaid bills in the new fiscal year. However we still finished with our $10k deficit. What does that mean? We didn t get a $20k gift from Together in Mission this year. If we continue as we are we will have a $30k shortfall. The economy is slow and there are some without jobs. After meeting with the Finance Council this week, it is clear that we will need to make some significant cuts like everyone from our families to our federal government. What are we to do about it? Increase Income and decrease Expenses? Thus we will have to add to the unemployed by attrition, reduced hours, lay-offs and assistance from volunteers. 1. Please do your best to follow the principles of tithing and give your contribution off the top of your income. 2. If you found that you have missed a Sunday and would like to make it up, please drop your offering in the collection basket or mail it to the Rectory Office. 3. Support the Stewardship Festival October 24 th. We need many more active parishioners in the life and ministry of the Church. Many Hands make light work! 4. Please appreciate that Mr. George Smith our Plant Manager has officially retired. He is not being replaced at this time. He plans to help out as a volunteer. 5. We need volunteers to help with the operation of the parish. High school and college students, stay at home parents, and retirees are invited to volunteer to help in the office and on the grounds. We need help with facilitating our website 6. If anyone know someone who has a used van that we can buy to replace the present van that is held together by chicken wire, let us know. If they can donate it, it is even better. If you want to know what kind of shape our van is in ask someone from St. Vincent de Paul. 7. Invite others to join our church. 8. Last but not least, pray, and everyone keep your heads up alert to the blessings God has for us. All we ask is that you do the best you can. 9 9 St. Brigid Church Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time From the Pastor s Desk 27 th Sunday in Ordinary Time-Vocation Awareness Sunday Respect Life & Rosary Month Word of God- It s about healing and giving thanks for the healings. Who needs healing? We all do. Why? It is because anyone who has ever loved another person, has been hurt by a betrayal or failing of some kind. There are definitely degrees of being hurt. A slap on the wrist is a far cry for Third degree burns. After forgiving the person: seeking God s mercy is healing, making up is healing, making changes in our lives is healing, doing good for others especially those who are in worse shape than we are is healing. In the scripture today, the lepers were outcasts because of disease and the sin that caused it in the first place. Jesus separated the sin from the disease, so in physically healing someone, he was spiritually healing them and seeking to restore them back into the community. In the Gospel, 10 lepers were healed and only one came back to thank Jesus. In our prayer do we find ourselves petitioning God most of the time? How much thanking is included in our prayer? Let s face it, rather than thank God after the fact, shouldn t we be operating every day of our lives with an attitude of gratitude? Vocation Awareness Sunday!!! Have you spotted any of our young people and told them that we see a vocation call from God to serve His Church? Have you taken the Vocation Chalice Home for a week to pray for vocations? If not now, when? If not you, then who? Religious Education Classes for First Communion & Confirmation started! Did you miss joining us Last Saturday at 9:30 AM!!! It s almost too late! Do you have your original baptismal certificates ready? RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Started! Tuesdays 7:30 PM in the rectory Looking for a church home? Frank to sign up for the RCIA. ************** Respect Life Sunday indeed Respect Life Month a Focus of Rosary Month in October Are you aware what it includes? Divine Mercy and the Death Penalty?
