7 7 St. Brigid Church 33 rd Sunday in Ordinary Time From The Pastor s Desk 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time-A WORD OF GOD: One of the attractions of Scripture is the way it makes us feel. So many stories and images in the Bible cause a reaction in us as we hear it or read along. Like the poor sop who got booted from the wedding feast two weeks ago, we are given another story which brings out a universal whine of it s not fair. Why did the first one get more than twice as the second? And when the third one messed up, how come the one with more got even more? We have two problems here. The first is what is given and the second is who gets more in the end. A talent is not a skill as we have it translated. It is a very large amount of money, more than the people who heard this for the first time would ever make in their lives. Yet we can consider our talents, skills and gifts to be similar. In fact, it is correct to think of how much we have been given in this life in terms of this Gospel. But let s go to the two reactions to the text. If God has given us so much, how does this reading guide us in putting it to good use? First of all, we begin to think like Socialists. Shouldn t the Master have given all three servants the same amount? We think there should be a redistribution of wealth and trust. But here s the problem: it was not their money! They were given responsibility, not reward. How come we do not think like this when we are given the task of taking out the garbage when our sibling is told to clean the bathrooms and mow the lawn? Which child ever complained that they were not given a greater share of the yucky jobs around the house? How many office types ask for more boring work because someone else had more? So the first problem is the temptation to look around and compare. Secondly, we object to the seemingly unfair pay scale. We look to the end of the job and by-pass the investment strategies or lack thereof. We are discussing the salary and benefits without considering the job. When I was a kid and asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I responded Very rich. How? I don t know. So the second temptation is to look into the future rather than present. Looking around and away leads to one thing: failure. It means that our energy and resources are dedicated to things other than what we have and are supposed to do. In the first reading, we hear the proverbial good wife is industrious. She makes do and makes the best of what she has and what she is capable of. She is living her best in the present moment. So what is this, a work ethic? No. It is more. It is a way of life in this world for a people with a destiny of immortal glory. God has given each of us in a unique way certain graces and certain crosses. The simple and the remarkable are the tasks of this journey but the goal is greater than the sum. We work with what life gives us as best we can in order to fulfill the high calling of a life immortal. Fantasies of future burdens or regrets at missed opportunities do not help our spiritual lives. On this pilgrimage of faith, if we rest, we rust. As we approach Thanksgiving and Christmas, we think in terms of gifts and gratitude and this is good and proper. But do not forget yourself. Take an honest inventory this coming Advent of what God has given you hard or easy, good or bad and how industrious you are with it. Don t look around or away but look within. The kingdom of God is in need of people who are willing to work and live. Faithful in tasks small and large, they become the tools of holiness. Picking up the groceries, paying bills, or calling a friend these are what God has trusted us with doing. May this Sacrament the work of human and Divine hands give us the strength and peace to gratefully and energetically live as good and faithful servants. And remember the humorous slogan of God s workers: The pay is not great but the pension is out of this world! Fr. Roger J. Caesar
