7 7 St. Brigid Church 2nd Sunday of Advent FROM THE PASTOR S DESK 2 nd SUNDAY OF ADVENT-B WORD OF GOD: Recently I read several criticisms that Advent itself has almost disappeared. They grumbled that there is little sense of the weeks before Christmas being a season in their own right. It has become a kind of extension of Christmas itself, filled with shopping, parties and festivity. Actually, I'm not convinced. During this time of year you get a sense of rising anticipation. Even the endless advertising about buying this and that plays its part. We look ahead to the great feast, and we begin to prepare. But prepare for what? That is the question. This weekend's readings and prayers urge us to prepare for the greatest event of all: the coming of Christ. To prepare for the Messiah will take more than mince pies and gift wrapping. One thing we may be sure of, those who were looking for the Messiah did not expect him to leave things as they were. The Christ would come to change things. He wanted people to know that God loved them and would never turn them away if they came with open hearts. His very coming, in fact, was a reassurance that God loved us enough to enter into the very heart of human life itself. For we matter to God. In our first reading from Isaiah we are reassured by the wonderful image of God as a loving shepherd, holding his lambs close to his chest in affection (Isa , 9-11). An image of God's love for his people. But if God who loves us like this comes among us, then things cannot stay the same. Whatever humiliates or hurts or destroys people must go, because it is so clearly contrary to the will of God. And anything we do to hurt others must change. The Messiah will be a new beginning. A change as profound as this will need preparation. So, every year we put ourselves into the shoes of those who wait for the Messiah. Along with the shopping, we need to ponder how to prepare for Christ and his challenge. John the Baptist called on the people to repent and to accept God's forgiveness (Mark 1.1-8). This was their preparation. Talk of repentance sounds gloomy, and certainly contemplating our sins is not exactly a sunny experience. But actually, John the Baptist is an optimist. He is saying that we need not stay where we are, that a new beginning is always possible, and that Christ will send the Spirit (verse 8) to help us and encourage us.
