4 The May Calendar During May the Church calendar has three important events, Ascension Day, Thursday 9th, Pentecost, Sunday 19th and Trinity Sunday on 26th. Ascension Day marks the end of the 40 days after Easter when the risen Christ appeared to his followers, proving to them that he had risen from the dead and defeated mankind s principal enemy of death and sin. The Acts of the Apostles starts with this description, as they were watching, he was lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight. Ever since, the popular expectation has been that heaven is somewhere up there, beyond the clouds. The early astronauts were keen to report that they had seen nothing of God as they rushed by in their rockets. Heaven is where God lives, but God is a spirit and He is everywhere. Until recent years, when health and safety decided otherwise, the choir used to sing hymns from the top of the churchtower, early on Ascension Day morning and even featured in a Granada TV documentary of Prestbury with a cameraman filming from a helicopter as he went round and round the tower. Pentecost is when we celebrate the sending of the Holy Spirit to the members of the early church and how they were empowered to speak of their Christian faith to all the foreign visitors to Jerusalem in their own languages. From then on church membership grew dramatically with the wisdom and guidance the Holy Spirit gave them, as it does for us today. Trinity Sunday reminds us about the nature of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit; one God in three persons. Some have difficulty with the doctrine of the Trinity. How can three persons be one and three at the same time? Our one God has three forms and Jesus spoke of them as the Father who sent him, of himself as the one who reveals the Father and the Spirit as the one by whom he and the Father work. This doctrine is the core of our Christian faith and distinguishes Christianity from all other mono-theistic religions. David Briggs Reader 1

5 Synods in the Church of England The governing body of the Church of England is its General Synod, set up by the Synodical Government Measure of It consists of three houses, bishops, clergy and laity, operating at three levels, the General Synod, Diocesan Synods and Deanery Synods. The Deanery Synod is the local level and St Peter s is in the Macclesfield Deanery together with 17 other parishes. Since the laity members of both the General Synod and the Diocesan Synod are elected by the Deanery members, who are themselves elected by the parish, this seemingly unwieldy structure provides a channel of communication, in theory at least, from individual parishes to the main governing body. The functions of the General Synod include legislation concerning the government of the Church and its institutions, its doctrine and its forms of worship. Since voting is by houses and changes in doctrine require more than a simple majority, achieving unanimity can be a problem, as has been seen in recent voting on women bishops. The General Synod meets two or three times a year for sessions which last four or five days. By contrast, much work at diocesan level is done in various committees, elected from the membership. The Diocesan Synod then studies proposals which have already been worked through, for example the diocesan budget, and meetings last a half day. Deanery meetings normally take place in the evening. Both Diocesan and Deanery Synods include agenda items which are intended to foster a sense of community between parishes and to promote at both diocesan and deanery level the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. For example Frank Field spoke movingly at Diocesan Synod of the response of the Church in the socially deprived areas of the Wirral where life expectancy is ten years less than in affluent West Wirral. Similarly, at Deanery Synod we have recently heard of inspirational work done in Macclesfield, and practical examples of how to make more effective use of church space. Thus the Diocesan and Deanery Synods are more than just meetings. When carried forward effectively they are a vital means of mutual support and encouragement for the Church. Stephen Swinfin 2

11 PRESTBURY ROSE QUEEN SATURDAY 15 JUNE Prestbury Primary School The annual Rose Queen procession will assemble at 1.00pm at Prestbury Primary School and depart at 1.30pm, processing through the village before returning to school for the crowning of the new Rose Queen, Vicky Riley, and her Rose Bud, Cate Howe. This year the procession will, for the first time, include fabulous floats see below for more details. Once the Fete has been officially opened there will be fun and games on the school field and in the marquee throughout the afternoon. There will be stalls of all kinds run by local groups, a bouncy castle and swing boats, music displays and dance demonstrations, face-painting and refreshments including a Pimms bar and delicious teas and homemade cakes. ROSE QUEEN FLOATS An invitation is extended to every organisation, group, shop, club or family in the village to build a float and make this year s Rose Queen parade the most colourful and spectacular ever. It could be something that reflects your activity or it could be something simply gorgeous that you just feel like making! Whatever you have in mind, the rules are very simple. Any material is fine tissue, paper, card, fabric, organic or manufactured materials, but you have to transport the float yourself. Wheelbarrows and bicycles are good, but there must be no engines of any sort, everything has to be selfpropelled! Please get in touch with Patrick (829288) if you re interested there will (of course) be a prize for the best! RESOULED AT THE ROSE QUEEN EVENING SATURDAY 15 JUNE AT 7.00PM In the Marquee on Prestbury School field We will be celebrating in the evening of Rose Queen Day to the fabulous live music of the band ReSouled, back by (very) popular demand playing soul music classics from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Dancing, chilling and great food from local businesses too. Don t miss the perfect end to a proper village day. Ticket information available soon. FURTHER DETAILS More information about all the Rose Queen activities and Sunday worship will appear in the June bulletin. If you have further enquiries or if anyone would like to help with any of the organisation, please call Sue Parker on All welcome! 8

12 PRAY A RAINBOW Starting with a sweep of purple, a rainbow is growing in the corner of church. It is a symbol of God s promise that he will never give up on us, a sign for us to remember as we pray for our church development plans. Right now we are praying for the process of the consistory court, and for final permission to build. We are praying that our vision for this church may grow. That we may be blessed with a building that isn t just beautiful and inspiring, but also with all the facilities that will allow it to be truly open, generous, loving and welcoming. So we are praying also for reconciliation and peace within our community. For every prayer, we ask that you a put a star onto the rainbow. And over the weeks we can watch it grow until the rainbow is built and it s a blaze of colour. Our church is open every day. Please come at any time and add your prayers for all our future.
