Parish office: Addresses: 1stInitial/LastName@stmarygreenville.org Pastoral Message Dear Parishioners, As I write this a parish committee is gearing up for Oktoberfest at Lions Park. The plan for the event is being slowly implemented. All of the ideas, some from years past and some new, are coming together and what was only a shadow in preparation is now becoming a reality. This process reminded me immediately of the second reading we hear today from the letter of St James. We may have heard from other Christians that we are saved by faith alone. In that same vein, Catholics can be accused of subscribing to a 'works righteous' religion. In other words as long as I do a, b, and c, I will get x, y, and z. If we read the letter correctly we can clearly see the importance of faith and the concrete reality that makes our faith real. If the planning committee only planned for Oktoberfest and never actually implemented the plan, in reality it would just remain an idea. Our faith is not about an idea but about a concrete person whose name is Jesus. He told us that whatsoever we do to the least of our brothers we do for him. Actually doing what we need to do for our brothers, not just because Jesus told us to, but because we see him in those we help, moves us more and more towards an authentic faith and not just a lofty idea. The documents of the Second Vatican Council state that a person should have full, active and conscious participation in the Mass. In the last several decades this participation has been reduced to 'doing something' in the Mass. So if I'm not an usher, Eucharistic minister, singer, priest, deacon etc., I'm no longer participating. Alone, this sense of participation lacks real depth. In 1947 Pope Pius XII wrote a document called Mediator Dei or the Mediator of God. In that document he stated firmly that participation in the Mass is primarily interior because, at its root the Mass is a prayer. A familiar analogy might be a Packer game. We may not be actively participating in a game but the reality is that most Packer fans have a deep participation in the game through their investment in it. The same is or can be true of the Mass. The more we invest ourselves in the life death and resurrection of Jesus, the more we will naturally get out of Mass. 2 St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Greenville, WI

3 Weekly Stewardship Thought In the second reading today, St. James has harsh words for those who do not put their faith into action. May we be such good stewards of God s gifts to us that we can never be accused of having faith that does nothing in practice. See James 2:17 I want to express my gratitude to the three young men who helped me by splitting wood, mowing my grass and moving pellets for me. Your help was of great assistance to me. Justin s new Address Father Justin Werner, our pastor emeritus, has moved to St. Paul s Villas in Kaukauna. Sign up to give blood Sept. 30th at the blood drive Members of the Social Concerns Committee will be available in the narthex after the masses Sept. 16, 22 and 23 to make your appointment to give blood on the morning of Sunday, Sept. 30th. The Social Concerns Committee and the Community Blood Center are collaborating to offer this blood drive here at St. Mary. Youth 16 and older can give blood with the permission of their parent or guardian. St. Mary Dine Out Family Nights St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception School and Parish are rolling out monthly DINE OUT Family Nights during the school year! Our first one is on Tuesday 9/18 at Jaripeo Mexican Grill (Greenville location) and 10% of sales from the entire day will be donated back to our school. Come on out to enjoy a family meal in support of our school while also supporting a great local establishment! Men of St. Mary's!!! That Man Is You! Information Social (football, pizza, & beverages) - Sunday September 16th, 730pm Join us Sunday September 16th in the narthex for a social gathering of football (Giants vs Cowboys), pizza, and beverages to learn more about the upcoming That Man Is You! program. All men from the community are encouraged to attend this social. TMIY is a free program that has educated men of our Parish and spurned a fellowship of male parishioners who continually support each other. The program seeks to address the pressures and temptations that men face in our modern culture, especially those relating to their roles as husbands and fathers. This year we are going through a brand new program (The Vision of Man Fully Alive). This program is appropriate for anyone who is new to TMIY or veterans of the program. We are also excited to offer two options for attending TMIY. The program will be offered Thursday evenings (7:00-8:30 pm) or Friday mornings (5:45-7:20 am) so attendees can choose what works best for them that week. TMIY starts Sep 20th or 21st in the Good Shepard room. All gatherings include a snack, presentation, and small discussion groups. Even if you have not attended in the past or cannot attend all sessions, you can jump right in and are very welcome. VIRTUS TRAINING ATTENTION ALL THOSE WHO VOLUNTEER WITH CHILDREN and VULNERABLE ADULTS! This training will explain how you can help protect God s most precious gift His children, and show you how you can provide a safer environment for them. The Diocese of Green Bay requires that any volunteers in the church, school, or faith formation have this training before they are permitted to volunteer for any activities involving vulnerable adults, children or youth including our service trips. 7 Community News Scott & Kimberly Hahn are Coming to Oshkosh! National speakers and prolific authors, Scott and Kimberly Hahn will speak on Understanding and Defending and Defending your Faith at St. Raphael the Archangel in Oshkosh on Saturday, October 20. Because so many people do not understand the Catholic faith or misunderstand, the Hahns will explain the truth behind what the Catholic Church teaches and why. People who may not understand the teachings of the Catholic Church will especially find the presentations engaging. This is a great opportunity to bring someone who has not committed him/herself to being a disciple of Jesus to the Scott and Kimberly Hahn event on October 20. Purchase a ticket for someone who is not yet a disciple of Jesus and invite him/her along with placing the ticket in his/her hands as your guest. Scott and Kimberly will be speaking at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church on Saturday, October 20, 7:45 1pm. Tickets are $20/person and can be purchased from the St. Raphael website raphael.org or in the St. Raphael parish office. Come to understand---and leave, being able to defend your faith. Xavier Children s Theatre Xavier Children s Theatre and Xavier Key Club invite families with children ages pre-school through eighth grade to a fun Halloween event on Friday, October 26th. Come in costume to the Halloween party presented by the Xavier Key Club, beginning at 5:30 pm in the Xavier High School commons. There will be games, face painting, candy and a Haunted House. Admission to the party and games is free with a non-perishable food item. Items donated will be given to a local food pantry. At 7:00 pm, a public performance of Three Fables will be presented by Xavier Children s Theatre in the Xavier Fine Arts Theatre. Families will love this adaptation of three short plays by Aesop, each complete with valuable lesson. Tickets for the performance are priced at $6.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. The box office is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from noon until 3:00 pm and one hour before the performance for phone and walkup sales. You are welcome to leave a message at any time. A full show description may be found at Fall Grief Gathering Series A three-week Grief Gathering Series will be offered for any adult who has lost a loved one. The series will be held at St. Therese Parish, 213 E. Wisconsin Ave, Appleton, on Wednesdays October 3rd, 10th, and 17 th from 6:30-8:00 pm. The program will be led by Care Ministry Coordinators from St. Therese and St. Bernadette Parishes. It is important to attend all three sessions.
