2 Attendance July 7 & 8: 812 individuals Stewardship July 7 & 8: $15, fiscal year-to-date: $28,365 Prior fiscal year-to-date: $26,431 Penitential Rite Christians are often exposed to the accusations "hypocrite." The accusation implies that a person is not living what they profess to be good and true. In other words, they say one thing and do another. If we are trying to live this life as we profess as Christians, we should not take this criticism to heart. While it may be true that all of us fail in our effort to live this life blamelessly before God, anyone who pays careful attention to the words and movements of the liturgy that we celebrate each week, will notice that one of the first things we are invited to do is to acknowledge our sins, faults and failings and ask the Lord for forgiveness and the grace to try again. For this reason, it is so important that we, all of us including the priest, take a few moments of silence at the beginning of Mass to really acknowledge our sins so to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries contained in the Mass. Since we are all sinners, what distinguishes us Christians is the fact that we make the effort to grow in virtue and grace. It is often the case that when people stop making the effort to live the life of grace and virtue, they turn to criticize those who are. Hypocrisy is the tribute that vice pays to virtue. Pastoral Message Dear Parishioners, In any new situation or experience in life, certain issues come up that need to be worked through. For example, a newly married couple who have just moved in together and begun forming a family need to work through tasks around the home. Normally there needs to be a resolution to determine the best course of action to make sure the tasks are being taken care of. When a resolution is set it leaves a precedent for the future so that any time the issue comes up again, there is situation in the past that resolves the question. Questions came up in the early Church too. There was a situation around the year 400 that dealt with a very important issue. At that time, there were some priests and bishops under threat of torture or death who had denied their faith. They were forced to burn incense to the emperor of Rome and, in effect, proclaiming the emperor divine. They apostatized. In other words, they denied everything they had proclaimed and professed to believe about the Catholic Faith and the divinity of Jesus. Once the emperor had died, however, those same bishops and priests, who had denied their faith, wanted to return to the Church. This resulted in two questions: Could they be forgiven for their sin?... and... Were the sacraments that they celebrated still valid even though they had denied the faith? The well-known St. Augustine of Hippo came up with a solution to these questions. In response to the first... Yes, someone could be forgiven for denying the faith. In response to the second question it was determined that the validity of the sacraments does not depend on the holiness of the priest or bishop. The principle is called ex opere operato. It means by the valid ordination of the priest, using the words provided by the Church and the matter (the bread and wine for the Mass) to consecrate the host, the presence of Christ does indeed become present on the altar. The same applies for the validity of the other sacraments. The personal holiness of the minister does not determine validity. This is still true today. However, there is something about the holiness of the minister that can determine the effectiveness of the sacrament. I will write about that next week. 4 School News 7th and 8th Grade Pilgrimage The students visited St. Joseph s Chapel, home to the School Sisters of St. Francis, and a landmark of Milwaukee where thousands of religious women have prayed daily for over 100 years. St. Josaphat s Basilica, the largest church in Milwaukee and a close replica to an European Cathedral, was their next stop. They were even able to celebrate mass together in the basement of the basilica during their visit. After a delicious lunch with Father Michael, Mr. Gietman, Mrs. Klitzke and Miss Fannin, they journeyed on to Marquette to visit St. Joan of Arc Chapel, brought over from France and reassembled at Marquette, and the Church of the Gesu, the Marquette Parish church. The students were able to enjoy each other s company, had time to pray and reflect, saw many relics, mosaics, stained glass windows, statues and witnessed the beauty and splendor of our Church.
