2 Attendance September 29 & individuals Stewardship September 29 & 30 : $12,174 Fiscal year-to-date: $224,735 Prior fiscal year-to-date: $201,750 The second Eucharistic Prayer is the shortest. It traces its origin back to the second century from an early Christian writer named Hippolytus. In his writing he describes the prayers that are said over the bread and the wine at a gathering of Christians. The English translation is almost word for word as the current Eucharistic Prayer. The scholarship on this prayer is a little debatable and it's origins in the second century has been riddled with doubt. However, it is a Eucharistic Prayer approved by the Church for use in Mass. Monday-Thursday 8 am 4pm and Friday 8 am -12 noon. What does it mean to say in the creed we recite at Mass that the Church is holy? First we need to know what holiness is. There is a common modern misconception that holiness is primarily something that a person does. Holiness, for example, is saying this precise set of prayers or that devotion. Or it might be eating this while abstaining from that. While there can be some truth in this, it does not get to the heart of the matter. These may only be external factors. Holiness is not first something we do; it is something we have in Christ. Holiness is found in our relationship to Him. In the case of Mary, Jesus' mom, we notice that in the Bible Mary' significance is marked by the fact that she is always with him. And if she is not with him, she is looking for him. Mary never really accomplishes much in light of what we consider accomplishments. She didn t found a fortune 500 company. She was not a great athlete or accomplish dancer or singer. She simply loved her son to the end. Even when we think of the great accomplishments of the saints throughout history, we don t see material proof of their holiness. We often hear of saints building monasteries, starting successful religious orders, and enduring great acts of suffering or martyrdom. While these things are great visible manifestations, they are not the primary focus of those saints associated with them. Like Mary, their primary focus is on their relationship with the Lord. Holiness is not something we do; it is based on the relationship we have with the Lord. Only out of this relationship do we find real meaning in what we do. That is the same sense we should understand the holiness of the Church. It isn't that she is perfect in appearance or in what She does or fails to do. Her holiness lies in Her relationship to Christ. This is why we can say that the Church is holy. St. Paul in his letters to the Ephesians, Corinthians and others calls the Church the Bride of Christ. Since the first chapter of the Book of Genesis tells us that in marriage the two become one flesh, this means that Jesus and His Bridegroom the Church are not divided. They may be distinct but not divided. Jesus is related to the Church like a groom to his bride. It can seem to many on the surface that the church has many wounds, she is still the bride of Christ underneath it all. Even the crucifix offers a prime example. If someone does not know why Jesus is on the cross, it can seem as if the whole scene is without purpose or meaning. But underneath all those wounds and scourges lies the truth and the proof of God s love for us and His Church. Today, as in many times in past Church history, we must try to look beyond the surface to the more profound truth of the Church. This month we honor St. Francis of Assisi. If you consider holiness impossible because of your past, you definitely want to check out this saint. 2 St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Greenville, WI

All gatherings include a snack, presentation, and small discussion groups. All men from the community are encouraged and invited to join this free program. 5 Faith Formation Adults Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Good Help Shrine Oct. 14th The only approved Marian apparition site in the US Mary visited the Belgium born Adele Brise in 1850 with a simple message, teach the people of this area the catechism. The shrine built in the place of the apparition has been a spot of pilgrimage for since and in 2010 Bishop David Ricken approved the apparitions as worthy of belief. Today people from all over the world come to this humble place where the Virgin spoke to Adele. A miracle also occurred here when many were saved from the Peshtigo fire. The shrine was left unscathed while all around it was scorched earth. Bus will leave St. Mary s following the 10am Mass on October 14th. Cost: $25 for families or $15 for an individual. Includes bus and lunch. No cost to drive up and join us. Bus space is limited. Name: How many? Phone: Bus? Yes No Please return no later than 10/10 to reserve your spot on the bus. Return to the parish office or place in the collection basket. Please include payment. More Parish Life Registration now open for the March for Life pilgrimage to Washington DC!
