This week we consider what makes the church apostolic. The word 'apostolic' comes from the word apostle which is derived from the Greek language. An apostle was an ambassador who was given all the authority of the person they represented. It literally means someone who stood out as an extension of that person. The Church is apostolic in three ways. Normally when we hear the word apostle we think of the twelve close followers of Jesus who are often listed in the gospels. These are also apostles but are always referred to as "the twelve" in the scriptures. There are apostles in general and out of those there are those specifically called the twelve. They were called by the Lord to a privileged place with Him. In general, an apostle for Christ could be (and should be) each of us, provided we authentically represent Christ. This is what is meant when we say that the Church is apostolic in the third sense. The Church represents Christ just as an authentic ambassador represents a country or nation. The general reference to apostle is given to all Catholic Christians as members of the Church. Those twelve specifically called by Jesus are represented in our present day bishops who are called the successors of the apostles who were chosen as the twelve. We act apostolically when we represent the faith to our families, friends and anyone we encounter throughout the day. And the Church Herself is apostolic because She represents Christ. These are opportunities for all of us to prayer and discern ways the we can be more apostolic as members of the Church to represent Her more authenticity every day. Eucharistic Prayer III is a re-writing of the First Eucharistic Prayer or the Roman Canon. In the 1960's several suggestions were offered to reorganize the First Eucharistic Prayer to make the order of the prayer more logical. Remember that in the first few centuries of the Church prayers were added to the Roman Cannon. Those prayers remained a part of that prayer for 1500 years. Those interested in reorganizing the prayer had three concerns: 1) Now that the prayer would be said allowed and in common language its repetition may be over burdensome for those at Mass. 2) The saints mentioned in the Roman Canon were specific to their time. 3) The order of the prayers in the Roman Canon would be simplified and placed in a more logical order. This is basis on which the Third Eucharistic Prayer was written and as we have it today. It is recommended on most Sundays the priest choose either Eucharistic Prayer I or III. 2 St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Greenville, WI
3 Weekly Stewardship Thought In today s Gospel, Jesus asks the rich young man to give away all that he has I order to have treasure in heaven. But he is unable to free himself from his possessions, and so he goes sadly away. Does what I own keep me from following Jesus? See Mark 10:17-30 How will you decorate for Christmas? It is time to think about what greenery you want to decorate your home! The Dan Baumgart Family is again organizing a sale of wreaths, crosses, hanging Christmas balls and Porch Pots with the proceeds from this fundraiser providing tuition assistance for students attending St. Mary s School and the planned expansion of the cemetery. Wreaths come in 20-inch and 36- inch sizes. New this year is a 12-qt galvanized Porch Pot filled with greenery. The order form is available on the parish website and in the bulletin stands. All orders must be received by Sunday, Nov. 4. The items will be available for pick up on Nov. 24th & 25th before and after the weekend Masses. SCRIP Are you using Scrip on a regular basis? It does not cost you anything and a percentage of the purchase goes to St Mary. We have gas cards, grocery cards, department stores, and many restaurants. To learn about the online Scrip offerings, go to ShopwithScrip.com. There you can learn about how to have Scrip delivered to your smartphone. St. Mary continues to have Kwik Trip cards available that earn the 10 percent rebate. They can be purchased by using the regular order form available where Scrip is sold or on the parish website. Scrip is available for purchase during school hours, Wednesday evenings during Faith Formation and after each weekend liturgy. Thank you for using Scrip Parish Life Fall clean-up under way for our cemetery It is time to prepare the cemetery grounds for the winter season. Please remove all decorations from burial sites by Monday, October 15 th. Removing these decorations facilitates the fall cleanup of the cemetery grounds and assures that you can keep any items that are important to you. Any decorations that extend beyond the headstone rows should be removed. Decorations for the winter season may be placed on graves after Thursday, November 15 th. Thank you for your cooperation and sensitivity in maintaining the reverent appearance of St. Mary s Cemetery. Bake Sale This Weekend There will be a bake sale after all Masses this weekend, October 13 & 14. The St Mary 7th & 8th graders will be taking a spring trip to Washington D.C. to learn more about our country s history & to see the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.
