The great news is that Christmas for Catholics is celebrated as an octave. This means that for eight days we celebrate as if Christmas were every day for those eight days. In addition to the octave, the Christmas season lasts until the Baptism of the Lord which lands on January 14th this year. Some may even keep their decorations up until February 2nd which celebrates the presentation of the Lord in the temple. The weekend that falls within the octave of Christmas is celebrated as the Feast of the Holy Family. That is this weekend. This feast is meant to honor the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. They offer us three things. They offer us an example, an inspiration and intercession. They offer us an example of marriage. It is sad that today this has to be reiterated but marriage is between a man and a woman and its purpose is for children. This is not a religious belief but an ordination of right reason. No one in the history of the world, using the basic skills of observation can contest this. Only the tyranny of feelings and fear force people into positions contrary to right reason. Jesus, Mary and Joseph offer us an example of a family ordered to its created purpose. The holy family offers us an inspiration of a family united for God's purpose. Each member understands and follows the path laid out for them by God. The family that prayers together stays together. That prayer leads to the generosity of each member contributing to the good of the family and avoiding seeking the good for individual gain. It is beautiful when the power of prayer is realized in a person's life. It is especially beautiful when a whole family realizes this. Each member of the Holy Family is also available for intercession. This comes under the Catholic understanding of the Communion of Saints. Jesus, the Mediator, unites us to God through His blood and sacrifice on the cross. We have the ability to ask, and in fact, persist in our requests to each member of the Holy Family to help us be a better husband through St. Joseph, a better wife through Mary and a better son or daughter through Jesus. We need only ask. The family is the basic building block of any society whether Christian or not. If we get the family right, we get the world right. 2 St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Greenville, WI

George Weigel, The Easter Effect THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, March 31, 2018 They were ridiculed, persecuted and even put to death. But they would not, could not, stop telling the world about Jesus of Nazareth. With their words, actions and lifestyles, Early Church members told their stories and, within a few centuries, nearly half of the Roman Empire was converted to Christianity. What was it that allowed them to literally transform the world? Two millennia later in another age of great hostility toward Christians there s much we can learn from these trailblazers of the 1st to 4th centuries. **No tickets needed/free will offering encouraged/for details, google CIAFMO or call **
