2 Attendance September 22 & 23: 979 individuals Stewardship September 22 & 23 : $9,332 Fiscal year-to-date: $211,159 Prior fiscal year-to-date: $200,623 There are four Eucharistic Prayers that we generally hear at Mass. Each one has a little different history. Some history might help. The First Eucharistic Prayer is known as the Roman Canon. It is the most ancient of the prayers and we don't even know it's origins. It seems to come out of the earliest first century Christian Communities. Many shorter prayers were added throughout the centuries which is why it grew in length. However, it has remained substantially unchanged for the last 15 centuries or so. It was the only Eucharistic Prayer used in the Roman rite of liturgy for that time until new prayers were introduced in the 1960s. The Roman Canon was also only said in Latin for that time until it was translated into English in the sixties. Monday-Thursday 8 am 4pm and Friday 8 am -12 noon. These are known as the four marks of the Church. We recite them every weekend at Mass in the Creed. But how many of us know what they mean? For the next four weeks I would like to try to explain what is meant by each of these marks. The Church is one. Its oneness comes from the fact that she is united to the office of the papacy who is the vicar of Christ and the visible head of the Church. Jesus Himself is the invisible head of the Church. The reference of oneness is to Her unity. Some might wonder why we might be able to make this claim given the current status of the Church. How can we say that that Church is united at a time like this? Try an analogy. We all have been given bodies. We are our body. Through the speech, mind, words and actions of our bodies people come to know who we are. Our bodies change. We do not have the same body that we had when we were 5 years old. We do not have the same body as when we were 18. The fact is, the visible reality of our bodies is constantly changing. But there is another reality that we know; the fact that even though our bodies change we are the same person. Sure we may act differently than we did years ago. We may have had an extraordinary conversion which changed our dispositions or attitudes, but at the heart of it, we are the same person. So we need to account for what we see and is changing, and the reality underneath all that change which remains consistent. We call that unchanging principle the soul. The soul has always been considered the principle of unity of the body. The oneness of the Church is like the soul and the body. From the outside it may seem as though the Church is falling apart in its visible reality which is all most people can see, but the reality on the oneness or unity of the church lies much deeper than the changes that may be frustrating or concerning us on the outside. The fact is, despite the appearance the Church is united in its teaching and faithfulness to Christ, even if some of its members are not united in that purpose. In every case, whether it be the church or anyone else, we should take care not to reduce people or the Church to its failings because we would certainly resist people reducing us to that status. Christians are always offered the grace of our Lord to see more profoundly into that invisible reality while acknowledging the visible change. Next week another difficult mark to understand. The Church is Holy. No Masses Oct. 2 & 3 Due to the Clergy Congress Oct. 1-3, confessions, adoration and Masses will be cancelled Tuesday, Oct. 2 and Wednesday, Oct. 3. The Liturgy of the Hours will be prayed in place of Mass. 2 St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Greenville, WI

3 Weekly Stewardship Thought St. James warns in today s second reading that those who hoard their wealth and live only for themselves will be condemned. See James 5:1-6 or Mark 9:38-43, 45, Please welcome the newly baptized: Aislee Lynn Fielding Daughter of Joel & Trisha Fielding Congratulations to Kristine Kumferman & Gabriel Griesbach who were united in marriage on September 14, Why would Fr. Michael be in a pontoon boat on dry land? Come see Fr. Michael in the Xavier High School Homecoming Parade on Friday, October 5. The Parade starts at 5:00pm at Pierce Park and follows Prospect Avenue to Xavier High School. Come on out and wave to this familiar face! That Man Is You! has kicked off but you're still invited It's perfectly ok if you missed the first session or two or if you may miss some in the future but do yourself a favor and make the ones you can. That Man Is You! is a free program that has educated men of our Parish and spurned a fellowship of male parishioners who continually support each other. The program seeks to address the pressures and temptations that men face in our modern culture, especially those relating to their roles as husbands and fathers. This year we are going through a brand new program (The Vision of Man Fully Alive). This program is appropriate for anyone who is new to TMIY or veterans of the program. We are excited to offer two options this year for attending TMIY. The program is offered Thursday evenings (7:00-8:30 pm) or Friday mornings (5:45-7:20 am) so attendees choose what works best for them that week. TMIY started Sep 20th or 21st in the Good Shepard room. All gatherings include a snack, presentation, and small discussion groups. All men from the community are encouraged and invited to join this free program. Even if you have not attended in the past or cannot attend all sessions, you can jump right in and are very welcome. For more information you can go online to and register OR contact Dave Reichenbacher at (text/call) or dave.reichenbacher@gmail.com. Koinonia Logos What is it? Save the Date! Our annual parish meeting is set for Thursday, Oct. 25th at 7 p.m. Mark your calendars now so that you can participate! 3 September 30, 2018 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

5 Faith Formation Adults Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Good Help Shrine Oct. 14th The only approved Marian apparition site in the US Mary visited the Belgium born Adele Brise in 1850 with a simple message, teach the people of this area the catechism. The shrine built in the place of the apparition has been a spot of pilgrimage for since and in 2010 Bishop David Ricken approved the apparitions as worthy of belief. Today people from all over the world come to this humble place where the Virgin spoke to Adele. A miracle also occurred here when many were saved from the Peshtigo fire. The shrine was left unscathed while all around it was scorched earth. Bus will leave St. Mary s following the 10am Mass on October 14th. Cost: $25 for families or $15 for an individual. Includes bus and lunch. No cost to drive up and join us. Bus space is limited. Name: How many? Phone: Bus? Yes No Please return no later than 10/10 to reserve your spot on the bus. Return to the parish office or place in the collection basket. Please include payment. September 26 November 4 Planned Parenthood 508 W. Wisconsin Ave, Appleton Public right of way. St. Mary has these Hours: Mondays 1pm-2pm, Tuesdays 5pm-6pm Fridays 9am-10am Saturdays 10am-11am Parish Contact: Quiana Betchner (920) The time is now to call upon God, through the powerful intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary, to heal our country and return it to holiness. Americans across the country are invited to pray Rosary Coast to Coast wherever they can gather: along the US coasts and borders; in front of state capitols; in other public areas; in parish Churches; or as families while viewing the livestream of the National Rosary Rally on EWTN. Rosary Coast to Coast will take place on Sunday October 7th at 3 pm Central. The intentions echo those of the USCCB Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty. As we read in Sacred Scripture: If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14 Go to for more information 5 September 30, 2018 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
