NOTES FROM THE PASTOR November 11, 2018 This weekend, we will join other parishes of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe in renewing our commitment to sacrificial giving ( tithing ) as the means of financial stewardship within the parish. Many of our parishioners have embraced sacrificial giving and I am grateful for your commitment to God and to our parish. Your Attitude of Gratitude is a blessing to our parish and to your personal life as well. There is no doubt that we find ourselves in difficult economic times and many people are suffering the effects of unemployment or underemployment. Others have seen their retirement nest egg decline significantly. Still, there is much to be grateful for because in spite of the current economic hardships, we continue to have a much higher standard of living than most of the people of the world. Stewardship is based on the spiritual principles of the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus. Stewardship is a way of life based on the premise that all that we have and all that we are have come from God and, as a way to thank God for all His blessings, we return a portion of the time, talent, and treasure that have been given to us. Stewardship encourages a spirituality that deepens our relationship with the Lord. Stewardship involves intentional, planned, and proportionate giving of our time, talent, and treasure. Stewardship addresses both individual parishioners and the parish as a whole. The spiritual benefits of Sacrificial Giving (tithing) are many and include: (1) a sense of peace and satisfaction that comes from generosity; (2) an awareness that God comes MASS SCHEDULE first in our lives, even in decisions about money; (3) a deep Saturday Mass :30 AM sense of pride in our parish s progress made possible Saturday Anticipatory Mass for Sunday :30 PM through tithing; (4) an ability to distinguish between wants Sunday Mass :30 AM, 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM and needs; (5) a deeper awareness of society s materialism Weekday Mass- Monday through Friday :30 AM and consumerism; (6) a keener appreciation of the world s Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday :15 AM poor and how we can lessen their pain and poverty; and (7) a quiet confidence in the Lord s protective care. ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL (ACA) We are now at the middle of the month of November and there is only one month left to fulfill pledges made to this year s Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) Campaign. As you know, the Annual Catholic Appeal is an archdiocesan campaign to help fund many of the ministries of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. Our assigned goal this year is $46,000 and all paid pledges in excess of that goal are rebated back to the parish to be used in parish projects. As of the end of September, our parishioners had an unpaid balance of $8,155 on pledges they had made. We are very grateful to those who have already paid their pledge in full. We hope that those who have partially paid their pledge will continue to make payments and honor their commitment by the deadline of December 31 st. We encourage those who have not yet paid on their pledge to honor their commitment by the deadline as well, to the best of their ability. For those who have not already made a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal, it s not too late! You can still make a pledge using the forms available at the Parish Office. Our Lady of Fatima Adult Faith Formation Journey with us as we grow in our Catholic Faith Decision Point Adult Faith Sharing Adult Faith Sharing groups meet in Room 1 of Fatima-Gallagher Hall on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, and on Thursday mornings from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. We are currently studying and discussing the book Decision Point which is a presentation of the Catholic faith by Matthew Kelly and the Dynamic Catholic Institute. High school and college age parishioners are especially encouraged to serve. Blessed Mother Rosary Guild Coordinator: Jahna Wilmott The Guild handcrafts rosaries for free distribution to various ministries world-wide in order to promote Our Lady s cause for devotion to her son, Jesus Christ, and world peace. Holy Name Society President: Collin Martinez The Society purpose is to gives public devotion and honor to the Holy Name of Jesus, and provide for the spiritual growth and enrichment of the men of the parish 18 years of age and older. A Corporate Mass is held at 10 AM the third Sunday of each month and a meeting follows. Legion of Mary Coordinator: Frances Holmes This is an international organization ministering to the spiritual needs of the parish community. The first year Pre-Confirmation class is for 8 th graders as well as any older students who have not completed it. The second year Confirmation Prep class is for students in grades 9 thru 12. Ushers Coordinator: James Willis Offer support to people by assisting in seating, taking up offerings, distributing the bulletins and newspapers. They must participate in a Weekend for Engaged Couples and attend an introductory class in Natural Family Planning. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM-The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is offered the third Sunday of the month after the 12:00 PM Mass. Arrangements are to be made in person at the parish office. A birth certificate is required. Parents and godparents must attend a Baptism class that is offered the first Wednesday of the month at 7:00 PM in Room 1 of Fatima-Gallagher Hall. Pre-registration for the class is required. Godparents must be at least 16 years old, confirmed and actively practicing their Catholic faith. If Godparents are married, they must be married according to the norms of the Catholic Church. 5 November 11, 2018 Page 3 Thanksgiving Turkey and Family Assistance Drive Our holiday drive for frozen turkeys and non-perishable food items has begun. Monetary donations are also welcome so we can provide families with vouchers to shop for fresh food items that suit their family Thanksgiving meal tradition. $30. for a family of 1-3 $50. for a family of 4-6 $75. for a family of 7 and up Frozen turkeys and non-perishable food can be dropped off in the Parish Office, or your monetary donation can be dropped in the collection basket, however, please clearly mark that it is designated for our Thanksgiving drive. The non-perishable food will be used to re-stock our St. Vincent de Paul Pantry. While we tend to think more about feeding families at Thanksgiving, our hardworking St. Vincent de Paul volunteers are busy visiting families who ask for assistance with rent and utilities in addition to food. Your donations help us to feed the hungry in our community throughout the year and help families keep their housing. THANK YOU for your donations and support!!! Thanksgiving Day Mass Thursday, November 22 nd at 9:00 am. Parishioners who attend the Mass are invited to being the bread/rolls/tortillas that will be a part of their Thanksgiving meal for a blessing at the end of the Mass. The Parish Office and School will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and on the Friday following Thanksgiving Day. Second Collection Next Weekend Flu Shot Clinic at Fatima TODAY Walgreens will be offering a Flu Shot Clinic at Fatima-Gallagher Hall from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm on Sunday, November 11, The quadrivalent flu shot will be administered which provides protection against four strains of the flu. For most persons with medical insurance there is a zero co-pay for the flu shot, so it will be provided at no cost to the recipient. Pray for the Poor. There are so many people who need our prayers. If you re overwhelmed and not sure where to start, try praying with your newsfeed. As you see headlines about what s happening around the world, pause and pray for the people affected by those stories. 2. Practice the Corporal Works of Mercy. The Corporal Works of Mercy are drawn from Jesus life and teachings. They call us to: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, visit the sick and imprisoned, bury the dead and give alms to the poor. Pope Francis added a new work of mercy: to care for God s creation. The Corporal Works of Mercy offer a clear model and starting point for how to care for our neighbors in need. 3. Make Caring for the Poor Part of Your Routine. Do you buy coffee, chocolate or Christmas gifts? One way to support low -income workers around the world is by buying things you use on a regular basis from organizations that pay a fair wage. If you drink coffee or tea, look for a fair trade label, which means that the farmers who harvest the coffee or tea are paid fairly and work in safe conditions. As you begin your Christmas shopping, consider buying gifts from around the world that are produced and traded ethically. 4. Learn about the Causes of Poverty and Work to Change Them. There are many reasons why people around the world are trapped in poverty: lack of jobs, war and climate change that affects what farmers can grow are only a few examples. We can raise our voices together to ask our government to support policies that help address these causes of poverty. 5. Support the Church s Outreach to the Poor. One way to care for the poor in the US is by supporting the U.S. Bishop s anti -poverty effort, Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). On the weekend before Thanksgiving, the same day as the World Day for the Poor, Diocese around the country hold the annual CCHD collection, and we need you contribute! The collection is the only annual opportunity to raise essential funds to support the work of over 200 anti-poverty organizations around the country. See for more information.
