Breaking open the Word 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time The signs of the end of time alert us to the fact that our striving to be faithful disciples has cosmic proportions. Living the paschal mystery doesn't just have consequences for ourselves, but also for all others. When we break out of a chronological understanding of time (that is, time as duration with past, present, and future) and break into God's eternal time (time without duration in which everything just is), we can begin to understand how even the little acts of kindness and self-sacrifice we perform each day affect all that is. Our unity with Jesus is deepened by striving to care for others, help others, shower others with dignity and respect. Here is a sobering thought: the way we care for the children, are honest at the workplace, take leisure time to care for ourselves affects our whole world and everyone in it. This is the privilege of discipleship: we can make a difference! This is the effect of faithful discipleship: the world is a better place--we have readied it for Christ's Second Coming at the end of time by our faithful and grace-filled living now. Fr. Lane K. Formation The second collection this weekend will go to the Formation Program for the U.S. Province of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Fr. Joseph Pasala ss.cc., Vocation Director for the U.S. Province, preached at all the Masses at St. Augustine last weekend, asking for support to help educate future priests in the order. Archdiocese of Military Services Envelopes will be available at the entrances to the church this weekend if you wish to make a donation to the support of the Archdiocese of the Military Services USA. The ministry of the archdiocese is to provide pastoral care and services to Catholics serving in the United States Armed Forces, enrolled in U.S. Military Academies, undergoing treatment at any of the 153 Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Guam, working in civilian jobs for the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and the families of these populations. The AMS is responsible for pastoral service to approximately 1.8 million Catholics. Daily prayer Making changes in our lives and the fear of making those changes are both themes in this week's gospels. Zacchaeus boldly reforms his life after he allows Jesus into it. The servant who is given a gold coin hides it in a handkerchief because he is afraid of his master. He has a chance to be given responsibilities but his fear keeps him from doing anything. We are often afraid when we consider making a change in our lives. We can see habits that are not healthy, a benign neglect of those we love and patterns that are deeply set in our lives. We may know that we want to change them but we don't have the confidence to believe we can do it. This week we are invited by Jesus to know that while we can't make those changes alone, we can if we allow Jesus to be with us in them. Where do we start? With a small prayer. In those tiny pockets of time during our week we can make these reflective moments to ask for help. What do we want Jesus to do for us? Where do we want to make changes in the patterns of our lives? What changes are we afraid to make? Dear Jesus, I ask for your help. Heal my fears. You have asked how you can help me and I am afraid to answer. I know what changes need to be made in my life but it seems overwhelming. Help me to open my heart to what you are asking - and to what I know I need. Be with me when I don't always know how to live in these new patterns and give me the humility to keep asking you for help over and over. Let me feel your presence in my life and that will give me the strength and courage I need to live my life more faithfully. Creighton University Online Ministries Page 3

4 From The pastor: Parking! You may have noticed that a section of the back parking lot was coned off last Sunday morning. It's come to my attention that people are double parking to make a fast getaway after the 8 and 10 a.m. masses even when there is still parking available in marked stalls. It's so unfortunate that we don't respect each other by parking whichever way we want without considering others. The Fire Department requires a fire lane to be free in case of an emergency. We will announce the new management of Aunty Carmen s Kitchen next week. Dear Fr. :Lane and parishioners: Thank you for having allowed me the opportunity to assist you in the operation of Aunty Carmen s Kitchen. I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of your ministry and outreach into our community. However, some personal and business matters that needed my attention made it difficult to continue. And so, it was with great sadness and regret that I relinquished the legacy of Aunty Carmen s Kitchen that you so graciously entrusted to me. Thank you to Father Lane, Sister Cheryl, Beverly and Staff, the Knights of Columbus, the congregation and members of St. Augustine and most of all to the dedicated volunteers who faithfully helped to serve each and every meal. Senior Services event Nov. 19/20 The Honolulu Community Action Program (HCAP) will be at St. Augustine at the 5 p.m. Mass Nov. 19 and the 8 a.m. Mass Nov. 20 for a Senior Services event sponsored by the parish Stewardship Committee. Representatives of Home Away From Home, ARCH a family owned care home, will also be available. HCAP has served Oahu s low-income residents since 1965 and helps individuals and families with job searches, education, literacy, housing, transportation, and emergency needs. Soup kitchen volunteers needed The parish is looking for volunteers to help with serving meals at Aunty Carmen s Kitchen. If you are interested in helping, please contact the parish office. 5 Knights of Columbus car wash The Knights of Columbus are having a car wash Saturday Nov. 19, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Augustine. The Knights will be selling tickets after all Masses or call Peter Evans at or Doc Hall at Saint Louis School open house Saint Louis School is hosting an open house on Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. at Mamiya Theatre on the St. Louis campus. For more information, call Admissions (808) or go to Annual Christmas concert Dec. 2 You ll want to mark your calendars now for St. Augustine Parish s annual Christmas Concert, scheduled this year for 6 p.m. Dec. 2 in the church. Lay ministers meeting Nov. 21 There will be a meeting for all lay ministers ushers, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers, and lectors at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, in the church. Lay ministers will be commissioned the weekend of Dec. 3/4. The cleaning crew! Knights of Columbus, Kamiano Council help to clean church grounds every other Saturday morning. If you would like to help with projects on the church grounds, please call the parish office. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Food and toiletries collection for Our Lady of Kea au mission The outreach ministry of Our Lady Of Kea au on the Waianae Coast weekly serves hundreds of hot meals to homeless individuals and families. This includes those who live on the beach as well as those in the emergency shelter in Waianae. In addition, Our Lady of Kea au provides food packages to those who come to their door seeking help. The need is great and is growing. Again this year, as a part of our outreach ministry, the parish of St. Augustine is collecting nonperishable food items and toiletries to support the Outreach Ministry at Our Lady of Kea au through Thanksgiving. This annual food drive brings home to us the very real needs of so many of our brothers and sisters. Drop off your nonperishable food items and unopened toiletries in marked boxes in the church. Thanksgiving turkeys needed We are accepting donations of frozen turkeys for our Thanksgiving outreach, both for those individuals and families served by Our Lady of Kea au and those served by Aunty Carmen s Kitchen in our parish. Frozen turkeys (no more than 12 pounds each) may be dropped off at Aunty Carmen s Kitchen Mondays through Fridays between 11 a.m. and noon up to Nov 18. Aunty Carmen s Kitchen served 1,457 meals in month of October In October, Aunty Carmen s Kitchen, the St. Augustine Parish ministry to those who are hungry, served 1,457 meals. In the first 10 months of this year, the number of meals served totaled 15,583.This ministry is supported through the generosity of St. Augustine parishioners and our many visitors. Mahalo for all that you do. Aunty Carmen s Kitchen offers a free meal from 11 a.m. to noon weekdays.
