It could be scary, thinking about how it would turn out. Will I be the last one picked? Will everybody laugh at me? Will I be good enough? Many of us may approach our faith and relationship with Jesus the same way, asking whether or not God will choose us; whether or not we are good enough. The Good News for each of us today is that God has already chosen us, and send us out on a mission that we can accomplish through his grace, power, and authority. First, we are not alone. The next time you are at Mass, look around and see all the people who are our brothers and sisters in Christ and recognize that we are not alone in this mission. In today s Gospel (Mark 6:7-13), Jesus sent is disciples out two-by-two, and we, too, are encouraged to find others who can walk with us as we strive to follow Jesus. Second, it s not all up to us. Jesus didn t send the disciples out saying, Do your best! Jesus sent them out and gave them authority. As we strive to act as disciples of Jesus and strive to carry out the mission that he has entrusted to us, we must recognize that he is not standing at a distance watching us or grading us on how well we do. Jesus is here in the midst of our struggles giving us strength and in the midst of our victories celebrating with us. He does not send us out with only encouraging words and our natural abilities, but gives us his strength, his power, his authority and grace. All that is necessary is for us to receive it and put it to use according to God s will. Finally, Jesus will continue to choose us and work through us, even if we fail over and over again. We can read in the Bible about the failures of Peter; about the doubts of Thomas, and even the betrayal by Judas Iscariot, but realize that Jesus had still sent them out to heal the sick, drive out demons, and call people to repentance. They were his instruments as we are, still today. In our lives, there will be times when we choose against Jesus, when we betray him, when we deny him but Jesus never gives up on us. In those moments when we have fallen short in the eyes of God, we are called to repentance, and then to begin walking with Jesus all over again. If even Judas was able to accomplish mighty works before his eventual turning away from God, what might Jesus do in and through us, if we allow him to and serve as his willing disciples? Need More Eucharistic Ministers for Mass The Parish is in need of additional Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion ( Eucharistic Ministers ) to assist with the distribution of the Holy Eucharist during Communion at the weekend Masses. Training will be provided. To qualify, one must be a registered parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, be at least 16 years old, and must be a Catholic in good standing who has received the Sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. The Active Adults group also sponsors field trips. Altar Servers Coordinator: Theresa Irvin A great opportunity for 4th graders and above to serve at the Celebration of the Eucharist. High school and college age parishioners are especially encouraged to serve. Blessed Mother Rosary Guild Coordinator: Jahna Wilmott The Guild handcrafts rosaries for free distribution to various ministries world-wide in order to promote Our Lady s cause for devotion to her son, Jesus Christ, and world peace. Choir Coordinator: Consuelo Chavez OFS Opportunities are for adults and children to lead the people in joyful worship by singing and playing musical instruments. Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors and Commentators Coordinator: Teresa Bennett As extraordinary ministers of the Holy Eucharist you can distribute Holy Communion during Mass or Proclaim the Word of God and introduce the Mass intentions and announcements. Holy Name Society President: Collin Martinez The Society purpose is to gives public devotion and honor to the Holy Name of Jesus, and provide for the spiritual growth and enrichment of the men of the parish 18 years of age and older. A Corporate Mass is held at 10 AM the third Sunday of each month and a meeting follows. Legion of Mary Coordinator: Frances Holmes This is an international organization ministering to the spiritual needs of the parish community. CATHOLIC CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE INSTRUCTION (CCD) for Kindergarten through 7th Grades Classes are on Wednesdays during the school year from 3:45 5:30 PM. CRE: Mrs. Bernadette Chavez CONFIRMATION CRE: Mr. John Varney A two-year program of catechesis and preparation to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation that is open to students in grades 8 through 12 who have been Baptized and have received First Communion. The first year Pre-Confirmation class is for 8 th graders as well as any older students who have not completed it. The second year Confirmation Prep class is for students in grades 9 thru 12. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA)- CRE: Kathy O Neill This is a program for individuals interested in becoming Catholic and receiving the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. Birthright Coordinator: Odelia Beach Office Helps any girl or woman regardless of age, race, creed, marital or economic status, who feels distressed by a pregnancy, allowing her to ask questions and explore her options without pressure and without being judged. Ministry of Care/Outreach- Coordinator: Mary Ann Lopez The home-bound Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion bring the Body of Christ to the parishioners who cannot attend the Celebration of the Eucharist. St. Vincent de Paul President: Margaret M. M. Trace Members grow spiritually through service to people in need and are dedicated to helping with food, utilities and rent. Ushers Coordinator: James Willis Offer support to people by assisting in seating, taking up offerings, distributing the bulletins and newspapers. Our purpose is to coordinate and offer service to the parish community and to encourage spirituality, friendship and support to its members. They must participate in a Weekend for Engaged Couples and attend an introductory class in Natural Family Planning. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM-The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is offered the third Sunday of the month after the 12:00 PM Mass. Arrangements are to be made in person at the parish office. A birth certificate is required. Parents and godparents must attend a Baptism class that is offered the first Wednesday of the month at 7:00 PM in Room 1 of Fatima-Gallagher Hall. Pre-registration for the class is required. Godparents must be at least 16 years old, confirmed and actively practicing their Catholic faith. If Godparents are married, they must be married according to the norms of the Catholic Church. 5 July 15, 2018 Page 3 RCIA and Adult Confirmation Inquiry sessions for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) and for Adult Confirmation have begun. RCIA is intended for unbaptized adults who wish to become baptized Catholics, for Christians who have been baptized in another Christian denomination and now wish to become Catholic, and for Catholics who were baptized but did not receive any additional Sacraments. The Adult Confirmation classes are for baptized Catholics who have received First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, but never received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Class sessions are offered on Sundays following the 7:30 am Mass, and repeated on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm in Fatima Gallagher Hall and began June 13 th. There is no cost to participate. Thoughts on Stewardship: RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS As the baptized, we are called into community, and we are strongest when all members have full faith in Jesus Christ. When one of us falters or begins to doubt his or her faith, that is when our faith is to be shared freely as a source of strength. If we hold our faith inside, then those around us will miss a chance to be edified and strengthened by our witness. We can give freely of our money, our time, and our talents but still not share our faith with those around us. This hinders the Body of Christ's ability to evangelize and spread the Good News. It also helps to keep members of that Body weak, because without the chance to hear our stories of faith, those with the need to hear can remain discouraged and lost. Faith is a gift from God to us, just like any other. We are called to cultivate our faith and grow it into abundance. If we do not share it with others, then why grow it at all? We are not saved because we have more faith than someone else. We are no better off with storage bins filled with knowledge, devotion, and faith experience than a baby on its day of baptism. The difference between the baby and us is that we have something now to share and the responsibility to do so. Our Lady of Fatima Adult Faith Formation Series Journey with us as we grow in our Catholic Faith The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic On Pentecost Sunday, copies of the book The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic by Matthew Kelly were provided to parishioners free of charge after all Masses. Fr. Schultz will now lead a six-session study/group discussion of this book on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm in Room #1 of Fatima Gallagher Hall. The series began on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 and will run through Wednesday, August 15 th. Since August 15 th is a Holy Day of Obligation (Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) and there will be an evening Mass at 6:30 pm, that session will run from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm. The six sessions will also be offered on Thursday mornings from 10:00 am to 11:30 am in Room #1 led by Sharon Mussman. Participants must read the assigned chapter prior to attending each session. If you wish to participate and did not receive a copy of the book, copies are available at the parish office.
