3 EDITOR S NOTE So it's that time of year again when we look back at what we've done, appreciate what we've got and think about what we can do better or differently next year. I wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and a New Year with lots of happiness, opportunities and enjoyment. All the best for 2018! Please keep sending in your ideas and contributions and contacting me with anything that you would like to contribute. NEXT DEADLINE 15th January 2018 newsletter@framptononsevern.com Terry Coughlin Tell us what you think of Your Village Newsletter We want your feedback us at: newsletter@framptononsevern.com NOTES FROM THE CHAIR Well now it divides the country you know! No, not BREXIT (although, to be fair, that is doing a pretty good job!) - something rather more imminent. Neighbours and friends arguing over? By the time you read this, it will be December and, in our house at least, we are finally allowed to mention the C word - Christmas. And then the discussions start! 1. Time to get the Christmas Tree. Are you a real or artificial family? Then what goes on the top? An angel maybe - or do you favour the fairy or (my choice!) a star. And you need the lights! (How come the set that you know worked perfectly when you packed them up last January now don t go at all?) Do we get white or coloured? Do we have them still or flashing? 2. Food - Turkey / Beef / Pork / Goose / Ham/none of the above? Auntie Jane only likes white meat and Uncle Harry is allergic to anything pig! And the big Q - are we having sprouts? 3. Presents - the children have been reading the Argos catalogue (there are other retailers as well!) for months. Mum- perfume or (ever reliable) earrings. Dad - tools (he might even mend that squeaky door!) Have we got enough batteries? And there is still Uncle Harry! And so it goes on. But it will all be alright in the end - it always is. Christmas is also a great time in our community. Go along and sing all your favourite carols at the Congregational Chapel or St Mary s Christmas services. Watch out for the Silver Band Christmas Concert - the Panache Steel Band is back this year. The Perryway Players Panto is sure to be good (Oh yes it is!) - tickets always sell out quickly but you can buy them online now. Lakefield School are getting prepared - their Christmas Fair on the 1st Dec. plus the traditional school productions. And if you fancy some fresh air - Frampton United 1st s v. Little Stoke on the 30th Dec. could be an intriguing match - they would welcome your support. Finally, from FCA, all best wishes to you and your families for Christmas and the New Year. [Oh and Uncle Harry - get him socks...but nothing boring, a pair which are really, really bright!] DEREK BARNES

6 FSSC Frampton Sports & Social Club Xmas is coming and by the time you get to read this Newsletter it will almost be time for us Northerners to turn on their central heating and retrieve their one and only jumper from the depths of the wardrobe although I have a suspicion that Sheila is already turning on our heating when I m out of the house. The FSSC team are really looking forward to hosting and supporting a large number of events in the FCA and FSSC calendar and we hope to see you at one or more of them during the festive period. From an FSSC perspective, our main events include the Xmas Party on Saturday 9th December which will be held in the bar. This is a free event for members and, as last year, will include bingo, a 1-round quiz, moonlight skittles, music, a finger buffet and the Grand Xmas draw. Also in the programme is the Xmas Karaoke (Saturday 23rd) in the Bar which has become a fixture in our calendar and we re delighted to again have DJs Ben & Alan challenging our vocal skills. We ll also be open the following day on Xmas Eve for Xmas music and a few games of Hoy I m sure. And finally of course you can join us in the bar to see in All these events are adults only and all will have a late licence. We had another fantastic night at Cadbury Hall in mid-october when Elvis returned to Cadbury Hall and we were delighted to put out the Sold Out signs. The 2018 programme has now been finalised (details elsewhere in the Newsletter) and will again feature world class tribute artists such as Sasha Leaper (Madonna), Glen Leon (Tom Jones), Mike Nova (Elvis) and Bob Drury (Neil Diamond). In response to members feedback we ve made a small change to the ticketing process for next year. Tickets will be available exclusively to members for a 4 week period before going on general sale approximately 3 months before each event. Exact dates will be publicised for each event nearer the time. Talking of FSSC membership, renewals for 2018 become due on 1 January although prospective new members can join after 1 December and enjoy 1 month free.. Priced at a very reasonable 5 for adults, 2.50 for over 65s and free for over 80s it provides excellent value for money. Those renewing their membership and prospective new members should contact one of the bar team. And finally, we were all shocked to hear of the sudden passing away of Dickie Dobbins. Dickie was a big supporter of the club and captained The Bell skittles team which plays out of Cadbury Hall for many years. He will be sadly missed and our condolences go to his family. For further information about the FSSC please pop into the bar and speak to any of the team. Alternatively watch out for notices of events on the Cadbury Hall facebook page or visit the FSSC page of Also, you can contact the FSSC bar at Cadbury Hall on if outside normal opening hours please leave a message and a member of the team will get back to you. 8 News from Frampton on Severn Silver Band The band has had a quiet spell, with our only recent event being the Armistice Parade and Service in Frampton on Remembrance Sunday. We were very lucky to have the sun out for the march and service, even if it was a little cool. Practising for our Christmas concert is now well under way. This will take place in the Cadbury Hall, Lake Lane at 7.30pm on Saturday 9th December. The band will be playing lots of Christmas favourites, with a chance for the audience to join in with some popular Carols. The band is also delighted that once again the Panache Steel Band will be taking part. Tickets for the concert will be available on the door. (Adults: 7.50, Children: 2.50). The band is always keen to recruit new members, and should you be interested in learning a brass instrument or resuming one you ve played before, we d love to see you at a practice on a Tuesday evening see our web site for further details:

9 BILL WOOD MEMORIAL SHIELD Congratulations go to Daphne Gardner who was a very worthy winner of this award for Daphne has lived in Frampton on Severn for most of her life and has played a large part in village life, being involved in so many village organisations and activities over the years. But lots of people belong to several groups and enjoy joining in whatever activities are on offer. What many members don t always appreciate is the enormous amount of time and work that goes on behind the scenes to keep a group viable and functioning. It is clear that Daphne has given endless hours to many organisations in this way. Glen Wood paid a fitting tribute to the work Daphne has done in our community - notably, until recently, 19 years as Chair of the Frampton Community Association and her work as Treasurer to various activity groups and still, currently, Frampton United Football Club and the more recently formed Frampton Snooker Club. She loves flowers and formed the Church Flower Guild organising several Flower festivals over the years. Today amongst other things she helps with weekly music sessions for the elderly and is a member of the various Church choirs. She has also been spotted playing table tennis! And her proudest achievement? Well by Daphne s own admission, probably her involvement in the formation of Frampton Tennis Club (a particular project of Bill Wood!) Top all this up with her work for the Childrens Society and her Christmas Shoebox Appeal and she still remains one seriously busy lady. Looking at the names on the Wood Shield it is clear that this award truly recognises the major contributions made by recipients to the life of our community. It is an award which really is from the people to the people. That Daphne s name has now been added to the list of recipients is a wonderful tribute to a much loved and respected lady of our village. DEREK BARNES Chair - Bill Wood Memorial Shield Committee 2017 SHOEBOX 2017 TEAMS4U THANK YOU'S A huge Thank You for all the support and goods collected for this year. Around 60 boxes were collected from me Tuesday, along with spare hats, scarves, mittens, and a selection of household goods. Many thanks must be given to the Village Hall jumble sale organisers, for allowing Carol and I to set aside useful household items, which received a hot wash at Carols, prior to being bagged up. Also many thanks to all the ladies in the Severnside area for their large supply of knitted goods. Christmas will soon be with us, so what better excuse to chill out with a pattern, wool and a pair of 4mm (8) needles. I have patterns if you need one. Daphne Gardner,

10 Clerk: Mrs Sheila Murray FRAMPTON ON SEVERN PARISH COUNCIL 44 Paynes Meadow Whitminster Glos GL2 7PS Tel: But what does the Parish Council actually DO? We are discussing the Emergency Plan for the parish at the next parish council meeting on Dec. 6th. Rev. Peter Cheesman will be coming to speak to us about it at the start of our meeting (7.30pm, Village Hall) and other parishioners are very welcome to call in to listen to what he has to say. Meanwhile, we have had a busy couple of months recently with some interesting items to discuss. Last month we received a petition from 500 villagers asking us to consider creating a footpath down the Perryway. We would really like to do something about this, though, as always, raising the money is a problem. In fact, various Frampton parish councils have been trying to achieve this for at least 40 years and finance has always been the obstacle. We have resolved to look at our options once again, with our county councillor s help. We have asked the petitioners to join us in a working party to track down sources of finance. (We think we will need around 3/4 million.) Next year s budget has taken our time in September and October. The total amount we get through council tax for the parish was 15,250 this year. Since we face some unusual increases in our basic expenses, we are putting the parish tax up by 4.9% which will take it up to This represents approx per household per year or 2½p per week. There was a debate about whether parishioners would find a larger % increase acceptable. After our increase, Frampton remains a parish with one of the lowest parish council tax elements in the area but this does carry the implication that our options for parish spending are limited. It would be interesting to hear your views on this. 5 of our councillors attended a meeting called by Stroud District Council to consult on the local plan. This looks at housing and employment need in the district and the allocation that we might get here. It was important for us to get our voice heard early in the process. A couple of councillors are also attending a Tourism Network meeting in Berkeley in December. Tourism is a mixed blessing it benefits our pubs and shop but parking is a problem. However, the tourism network also makes recommendations for improvements in transport, footpaths and cycle ways and we feel that it is important that we make Frampton s needs known. Some brief items of news: Our defibrillator training took place on November 18th. The new Community Shopper bus started running on 14th November. It will take those with mobility problems from their homes to Waterwells shopping centre. We were pleased to co-opt Julie Davenport to join us on council from December. Welcome to Julie. Last but definitely not least. I want to pay tribute to Gill Rogers, who sadly died in October. Gill and Derek were both very helpful to me when planning our first survey for the parish plan, a consultation of local employers. She was involved in organising the Frampton Hidden Gardens afternoons and made huge contributions in the wider local area. We wish Derek and his family the solace of happy memories during a sad time. Cllr. Joy Greenwood

Bill Wood Memorial Shield Committee District and County Councillor's Report Happy Christmas and all the Best for 2018 We would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and all the best for It is always a good time of year to look back at what has happened in the last year and look forward into As it is Christmas I think it is only right that we focus at the many good things done by local government, rather than the important task of challenging and holding to account those things that don t always work well. At Stroud District Council we have seen the first full year of the new refuse collection and recycling scheme. Although there are financial challenges implementing this the increase in recycling has been nothing short of phenomenal. The amount of landfill has been halved, recycling has increased and food waste collected exceeds 500 tonnes when previously we didn t collect this at all. In other good news with the Stroud Local Plan we have seen an improved planning decisions. More appeals for inappropriate development have been rejected and in Frampton we have seen planning permission for much needed affordable homes in Lake Lane. Looking forward to 2018 the consultation on the next revision of the local plan has started and Frampton Parish Council has started to input into this process. At County Council we have seen progress in Broad Band including the announcement of Phase 2 which will fill many if not all of the gaps. There has been significant re-surfacing of roads in the area although still much to be done. Looking into 2018 I am working with the Parish Council to see if we can find a solution to the Perry Way A38 junction. This will not be easy but we will do all that we can. Finally if there is anything we can do to help, contact John Jones at cllr.john.jones@ stroud.gov.uk or Stephen Davies at cllr.stephen.davies@stroud.gov.uk. 16 THANK YOU'S FOR BILL WOOD MEMORIAL SHIELD I am so lost for words. I am used to being on the giving side of this memorial, and not at the receiving end. It is such an honour to receive, and I accept it, in memory of such a great guy. Bill put so much in to this super village that we live in, and we should all be grateful for what he achieved. I have strived to keep up his good works, and hope that I am remembered for the better, and not the worst. I think the last thing that Bill and I did together, with the help of the playground team of course, was to dig yet more holes to house the landing pad for the slide. Rightly so, Bill slid down first, with ribbons and flowers streaming from his bonnet, closely followed by Robin and then me. Little did I think that there were many more holes going to be needed as the playground progressed, and is still progressing. It is no wonder I have back problems. I have been given such wonderful tributes by so many tonight, and am wondering who this person, christened Daphers by Bill, really is. I appear to have done such a lot, and can only assume that Frampton has been my salvation, and number eleven will forever be my Glory Hole. 18 From the Team Rector Well done to all those on the ball people out there who noticed that I referenced Advent way too early in my last letter. Well, we are almost in Advent, at the time of writing anyway. The first frosts of the season have whitened the ground, the leaves have turned and are falling, many trees are bare of leaves. What a busy time this is. Many people refer to this as the silly season, and in a way this is an apt name for this time of year with everything on the go and maybe not enough time to do it all. I am loving the gatherings which are traditional in this extended season Harvest suppers (noisy, chatty, warm, friendly), All Saints (gratitude, sadness, introspection), Remembrance Day services (solemn, structured, dignified), Christmas (bright, family, celebration). However, it is also a profoundly serious time in terms of our focus. All of these gatherings have deep Christian roots which point us to our God who is God with us: who mourns with us as we grieve; who was as present in the trenches of Ypres, the beaches of Normandy, the streets of Londonderry as He is in the beauty of our churches; who chose to step into our reality as a little baby. From the Garden of Eden to now the Christian faith asserts a fundamental truth, that God is a God of presence, God with us. Let Him be with you as you celebrate these big events, let Him walk with you in the little things in life and remember that behind each observance is our God of grace and power. 21 Severnside Mothers' Union Tuesday 5th September saw the Mothers' Union members back in Saul after a couple of months away. First in June we had afternoon tea at Highfield; in July we went to Frampton and Bright Hour for an interesting talk by Rose Hewlett; and in August we hosted the annual Mary Sumner Day tea party at Saul Memorial Hall. People from the Deanery turned up on a wet afternoon, but about 50 came and it was interesting to meet people from different villages. At our first meeting of the Autumn, the Rev Vernon Lidstone took Communion and hinted that it may be the last time he will be taking it, as he and Penny are on the move from the area. Thank you Vernon for being there for us in the past and we wish you both a happy move to Devon. Our speaker was Paul Summersby who is a Street Pastor in Stroud and told about his job which at times can be harrowing but other times very amusing. He is an excellent speaker and made the subject very interesting, taking many questions afterwards. The meetings of October and November were very depleted as several people were either on holiday or ill, the weather not being very good either. However, we welcomed Rev Charles Minchin to take Communion and he stayed for tea and cake afterwards to be able to talk to everyone. Gwen and John regaled everyone present with some poems and stories. On 14th November we were invited to attend the Bright Hour meeting in the Congregational Church when Ruth, who originally owned The Light Shop in Stonehouse, came to speak to us and brought some of her stock for us to purchase for Christmas presents. As always we had a jolly afternoon with our friends. On December 5th the Severnside MU are welcoming the ladies from Bright Hour in Frampton to share their Christmas Communion, when we shall have some carols and Rev Steve Harrison is coming to meet us all and take the Service. On the 7th about 14 of us are going to Ley Bistro for our Christmas celebration lunch. Our first 2018 meeting will be in St James, Saul at 2pm on Tuesday 9th January when subscriptions are due. The following month will be the Annual General Meeting. We will be pleased to see some new faces from March onwards, especially in April when we have a local speaker who will be telling us about his Mother who was a Land Army girl in World War II. The Thames Head Singers Spirit of Christmas A concert at St Peter s Church, Framilode. Saturday 16th December, 7.30pm Directed by Andrew Hopwood Join us for a heart-warming evening of Christmas music at St. Peter s Church in Framilode, on the River Severn. The concert will include a feast of carols, sacred music and modern pieces to bring out the festive spirit in everyone, with plenty of audience participation! Tickets 8 in advance from St. Peter s Church ( or bettyh2003@yahoo.co.uk ) or 10 on the door (under 16 s free). Further information and full programme - In support of St. Peter s Church.

29 News from Frampton on Severn Tennis Club Our Finals Day took place on Sunday 24 September and the weather gods were on our side for yet another year as we enjoyed a perfect day for tennis - dry with some sunshine and practically no wind whatsoever! The day got off to a great start with John Harding firing up the BBQ, to provide delicious bacon rolls from 9.30 am, followed by excellent sausages and burgers, all sourced through Frampton's very own Mrs Massey. Lainey and Mike John also did a great job serving up hot drinks and beautiful home made cakes baked by members of the club and the parents of junior members. Needless to say, the bar was also a popular attraction thanks to the efforts of Tim and Amanda Tyler, and Annabel Wace also proved to be very popular serving up glasses of Pimms (tennis wouldn't be tennis otherwise). The juniors not on court enjoyed games of table tennis and mini tennis - and even found time to help out the adults. Oh, there was some tournament tennis too - and it was fantastic entertainment. So without further ado, here is our roll of honour for 2017: Ladies Singles sponsored by Courtyard Clinic Isi Wain Men's Singles sponsored by D C Merrett & Company Limited Jason Boon Ladies Doubles sponsored by Bristol Energy Isi Wain & Sharon Webb Men's Doubles sponsored by The Anchor Inn Shaun Morris & Jack Thomas Mixed Doubles sponsored by ISCA Europe Kim Wain & Isi Wain Ladies Doubles Plate sponsored by The Lightworks Clinic Alison Pritchard & Diana Tasker Men's Doubles Plate sponsored by The Red Lion Dave Kent & Mark Smith Mixed Doubles Plate sponsored by D Kent Fencing David Vincent & Jan Vincent U18s Girls sponsored by Goose & Gander Ltd Tiegan Puttock U18s Boys sponsored by JR Building Griffin Morefield U 14s Girls Sponsored by Dave Feltham Motor Services Emmie Hedges U 14s Boys Sponsored by Avon Belting Edward Loader U 12s Girls Sponsored by Cotswolds Wind Academy Olivia Lundie U 12s Boys Sponsored by Tim Tyler Doors Henry Seal U10s Sponsored by Honey Legal Charlie Denton U9s Sponsored by Bob Roberts William Welby U8s Sponsored by System15 Tilly Priestley Thank you to all of our sponsors and to the volunteers and committee members who worked hard to provide a very enjoyable and successful event. A big thank you also to our head coach Jason Boon whose energy, enthusiasm and warmth add so much to the club and the community. Due to illness, the Finals Day presentations at Cadbury Hall which were scheduled for 8 October, had to be postponed until 18 November. Nevertheless, by the time people read this update we should have held the ceremony and celebrated all of our tennis successes from last season. Moving into Christmas mode, we have our annual Senior Xmas meal at the Red Lion at Arlingham on 6 December. Recognising that our many juniors wish to celebrate more actively than the seniors can manage, our Junior party will be at Stroud Bowling on Saturday 9 December from 10 am. We are in the process of obtaining permission to erect our practice wall at the back of Court 3, having failed to locate it at our preferred location. Fingers crossed! You may have noticed that the path to the tennis courts has been redone with the aim of making it wheelchair friendly. Our coaches are trained to deliver tennis to those in wheelchairs and we hope to make use of this capability soon. This whole venture has been enabled by a grant from Gloucestershire County Council to whom we are very grateful. The entire Committee of the Frampton Tennis Club wishes all its members and readers of this news a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas.

30 The Pinching Memorial Trust I have been asked to explain a little about the Pinching Memorial Trust and the history behind it. The Trust was set up in memory of a former Frampton on Severn doctor, and covers the parishes of Arlingham, Eastington, Frampton on Severn, Fretherne with Saul, Longney, Moreton Valence and Whitminster. The purpose of the Trust is to help persons resident in the area of benefit who are elderly, disabled or suffering an illness and are in need of financial support. The Trust is able to help pay for items, services or facilities which are not readily available from other sources. The Trustees are also keen to promote the good physical and mental health of those living, working or receiving education in the area of benefit, in particular but not exclusively through the provision of financial assistance for education and practical advice. Applications for consideration by the Trustees, who meet quarterly, should be sent to The Clerk, Pinching Memorial Trust, c/o Frampton Surgery. Brief history of the Trust Dr William Guy Pinching, MRCS, LRCP was a native of Gravesend and received his medical training at Guy s Hospital. This obituary appeared in the local newspaper. He was keenly interested in sport and, while at Guy s, was a member of the Rugby XV; he also represented Kent in several county matches. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Gloucester Football Club**, rarely missing a big match at Kingsholm. He involved himself with local cricket and did much to encourage the game in Frampton and district, where he was extremely popular with all classes. He was actively identified with all the organisations that tended toward the brightening of rural life and he was a prominent worker in connection with Frampton Horse Show. (** I have checked with the Chairman of Gloucester Rugby Heritage that this was the correct title in the early 20th Century for what is now Gloucester Rugby Football Club.) I know that today s supporters may well have been jumping up and down when I wrote Football and Kingsholm!! Dr Pinching died suddenly on 16th May He was 48 years of age and had been the local doctor for 16 years. He had been a very popular man and, as the village was concerned for his wife and children, a memorial fund was set up which raised about A parcel of land on the Perryway was then bought from the Frampton Court Estate for 25, and The Pinching Memorial Cottage was built. The Trust stated that Mrs Dorothy Mary Pinching was to be able to live in the cottage rent-free for life; she was to be responsible for the payment of taxes, rates and other outgoings, and for keeping the cottage in a tenantable state of repair and properly insured against loss or damage by fire. According to solicitor s letters on file Mrs Pinching always fulfilled her responsibilities for the cottage. She let the house to tenants at some stage (for some years to the Air Ministry) - and was then entitled to receive that income for life. The original deeds stated that after Mrs Pinching s death the income should be used for the benefit of The Local Nursing Association, any Local Medical Charity and/or the Gloucestershire Royal Infirmary and Eye Institution; a charity being deemed local if the trustees considered that it was directly or indirectly for the benefit of the inhabitants of Frampton on Severn - whether or not it was also for the benefit of inhabitants of any other parish or place. However, as the establishment of the NHS provided public funding for hospitals and medical services, the house was sold on Mrs Pinching s death (in the late 1960 s) and on 3rd August 1971 a revised Scheme was approved by the Charity Commissioners for the regulation of the Pinching Memorial Trust. This was the foundation of the Trust that is still in existence today. I understand that the first purchasers of the cottage were the Hogbens and then the Millers (current owners). The Hogbens changed the name to Eastbrooke (after their sons Easton and Brooke) however, many local people still think of the cottage as Memorial Cottage and associate it with Dr Pinching. In recent years Professor Anthony Pinching grandson of Dr Pinching has visited Frampton and has been able to visit Frampton Court, the new (and old Surgery) and also Memorial Cottage where he was touched to see the brass memorial plaque to his grandfather. (Thanks to the Miller family for allowing the visit into their home.) The Trust relies on the donations it receives which enable it to continue to make grants and the Trustees are extremely grateful to local residents and Frampton Surgery for their kind support.

31 News from Wick Court Another year is drawing to a close the children are enjoying beautiful frosty mornings and some stunning evening walks across to Oldbury Farm and out to check the sheep. So many of them have never seen the night sky with so little light pollution and the addition this week of firework displays on every horizon alongside the full moon was particularly impressive. As the season changes so do the jobs the bees have been put to bed for the winter and we are busy juicing apples and pears, the whole yard smells amazing and the pigs are enjoying the leftovers. In the vegetable garden harvesting continues and empty beds are being prepared for next season, a steady stream of wheelbarrows moving muck and compost. Sheds are being prepared to bring the stock in and soon we shall be getting ready for lambing. We have also been very fortunate to have some Gamekeeper Walks provided by Sam Walker of BASC and kindly funded by the Frampton Fair. These have been very popular with the children who have loved spotting animal tracks and clues, collecting feathers and bones and watching what was captured on some camera traps set in our Wildlife Walk. They also got to try pheasant plucking and the feathers will be used for craft activities in the Woodland sessions. Over the summer the team who built our two beautiful roundhouses returned to build another stunning structure a new foot bridge across the moat joining the garden to the orchard and Woodland area. The whole area has been landscaped and we are just completing a wood-fired pizza oven with the children. Already this area has hosted the Acorn School for 3 visits, the Gloucestershire Entomology Group and Eastington Primary School who came for their annual twinning visit with Charles Dickens School from Southwark. We are also trying to complete the floor of the main roundhouse if anyone has any house bricks, any size or colour, which you no longer need we would be very happy to collect them from you, to keep our junior bricklayers busy. Our resident Story Teller, Bill Church has a book aimed at 9-12 year olds being published in early December. It contains two stories "Don't look at Me Like That" - a spine tingling tale with a historical echo that moves between London and Wick Court; and "Mollie the Sheep" telling the amazing tale of Wick Court's special idiosyncratic sheep. The book has been illustrated by the fabulous local artist Jane Fryer. It costs 5 and proceeds will go to the charity. Copies will be available from the farm or direct from Bill, co.uk a perfect Christmas gift! And if you want to feel really seasonal - the traditional Christmas Extravaganza organised by Beer and Books will take place at the Three Horseshoes, Frampton on Weds 6th December from 8 p.m. Fabulous music from Dan Everett, Poems from Brian Dimmock and Mike Church (over from Wales), a story from Bill Church and much more. All for free but donations for the charity can be made. Christmas is a time for good food we have Gloucester beef, Old Spot pork and sausages and lamb in the freezers, just give us a ring or to arrange a time to come and collect. And of course for those who are looking beyond Christmas, our special ceremony marking the turning of the seasons, our annual Wassail will be on Saturday 20th January from 7.30pm. As ever there will be music and dancing from the Lassington Oak Morris one of whom is also having his head shaved to raise money on the night let s hope it s not too cold.., and of course Wick Court suppers, mulled cider and the chance to walk around a tree in the orchard singing a song! All welcome and, as ever, dress for the weather and mud and bring a torch or lantern. Friends of Wick Court This new group has been set up to build on the amazing goodwill of people living locally and in the wider Gloucestershire community. It is an opportunity to get involved and help. By becoming a Friend you can become an invaluable member of the Wick Court family and help us raise funds to sustain the work at the farm. The FoWC will be holding events throughout the year watch this space for details. The first project is to raise enough money and goodwill to create a proper car park anyone who has tried to park for an event will appreciate the value of this. It will also make life safer for the children and help protect the roots of our amazing oak tree the children measured it recently and it has grown 22cms in the last 10 years so still very much alive. If you would like to join the Friends, donate money, time or expertise or would like to book Wick Court for your own event then please do get in touch. And finally as each year seems to spin round faster than the last we find that 2018 will mark the 20th anniversary of the first group of children arriving at Wick Court. As no birthday is complete without a party, plans are underway for a fitting celebration which will be held on Thursday 21st June 2018 and the longest evening will see The Handlebards joining us and the children for a special birthday performance in the orchard keep the date free! As ever thanks to all our local supporters and volunteers and we look forward to seeing you at Wick Court soon. Heather heather@farmsforcitychildren.org

32 Hello from Wild Hogs. Wild Hogs Hedgehog Rescue Old Bakery Cottage The Street Frampton on Severn Gloucestershire GL2 7EA or Registered Charity By the time you read this we ll be into hibernation time for most hedgehogs. The actual period depends on the weather, but if temperatures have been consistently low, and food has become scarce, our prickly friends will be asleep for the winter. Some of them may have chosen a nice pile of branches, twigs and leaves to snuggle into, so if you re planning to burn such a pile PLEASE move it all to another site before lighting don t just check it, it s so easy to miss a hedgehog. You may, even in December, see smallish hedgehogs out and about; if you do, please capture them and call us, as youngsters weighing under about 600g that s about the size of a small melon are unlikely to survive. As I write this, in early November, we already have in the hospital quite a number of these autumn juveniles. We will keep feeding them well into winter until they are big enough to be allowed to hibernate. We ll then leave them largely undisturbed to sleep, just checking them now and then for weight loss. Once the weather is warmer and they wake up we ll be able to release them back to where they came from. The hospital has been transformed over the last few months with new cages, flooring and lighting. It s so much easier to work in now, and the facilities for treating the animals are greatly improved. This is all thanks to amazing support from so many people, and we are hugely grateful. We have a couple of events coming up in December where we hope to see you: the Christmas Craft Fair on 2nd December in the Wool Barn, Frampton and Teckel s Christmas Fair on 3rd December in the Village Hall, Whitminster. You may find some ideas for Christmas presents on our stall. We re also selling 2018 calendars, with wonderful photos of hedgehogs, see below. It s wonderful value for 7 and we d like to thank our sponsors who kindly paid for its production. We wish all our readers a really Happy Christmas and New Year.

40 CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH We have enjoyed some extremely good services over the last two months and we thank the Ministry Team for all that they do in supporting the Minister. We have just held our Remembrance Day Service which was very ably taken by Sue Cowley. We also joined many other people of the village in the service of Remembrance at the War Memorial at Frampton Church and for the laying of the poppy wreaths in memory of all those who have given their lives in the service of this country. Those who attended the Cafe Church at the Community Centre very much enjoyed the experience and will probably attend again in the future. We are now looking forward to our Christmas Services and details of these are given below. The October lunches were well supported with a party of walkers joining us on one Friday and the WI lunch group joining us on another. We raised the sum 740 for our Restoration Fund. We thank all of you for your support. There is so much work needed now particularly in the Schoolroom and Kitchen which will be undertaken when the balcony restoration has been completed. Meanwhile a member of our congregation, Arthur Naylor, has been quietly working away on small repair jobs and also - a not so small job. - taking down an outside porch which was rotting and becoming dangerous and now preparing the main doors for re painting. We thank Arthur so much for all the work he is doing on our behalf. I should also like to take the opportunity of thanking Stephen Hart for all the work he has done for the Chapel as Treasurer. Stephen recently retired as Treasurer and has done such a wonderful job for us over the years. I was trying to think how long and it must be - about 30 years. Stephen and Janet have been members of the Chapel since they were married, the children all came to Sunday School and then to services. We very much value all that they have done for us. Thank you from all of us Stephen. The job as Treasurer has now been undertaken by two people, Steph Bridgwater and Mary Naylor. They are gradually coming to terms with this onerous task and we thank them for coming forward to take this task on. Stephen is a hard act to follow. The Bright Hour were joined today by some members of the Mothers Union for a visit from Ruth of the Light Bookshop. Although the shop is now closed Ruth and Keith still carry on with their Christian work by visiting various churches and organisations and Ruth was doing so today by visiting us and bringing lots of Christmas cards, paper and other goodies for us to buy and in giving a most interesting testimonial, sharing with us her journey to where she is today - a life of true Christian Faith. Everyone shared hymns, prayers and fellowship followed by a delicious tea.bright Hour is held every Tuesday at 2.30, everyone welcome. We were extremely sorry that we had to cancel our Musical Evening with Fish and Chip Supper, but do look out for our notices as we are going to hold it in the Spring. Don't forget to come along to our Coffee 'Pop In's' held on the last Friday of each month Mums Babies and Toddlers still continue on Thursday mornings weekly Services are given below held at am followed by coffee. 41 FRAMPTON WI The October meeting of the WI was the traditional Harvest Supper. The committee members organised all of the food a ploughman s supper, followed by a selection of crumbles and the members ran the meeting. Glenna Hyden stood as President and Anne Roberts acted as Secretary and ran the business part of the meeting. The Speaker was Jenny West and her topic was Know your Hormones. A tantalising title and one which proved to be very interesting. She spoke about people with problems with their pituitary glands and how that can affect their lives particularly as it is very difficult to diagnose. She has suffered from this herself and now helps to raise awareness of the problems through her work as Chair of the Pituitary Foundation. The AGM was held during the November meeting, but after the Wine and Christmas Nibble tasting which was given by members of staff from Waitrose, ably assisted by Linda Hall, a member who used to work for them. They generously donated a gift voucher as a raffle prize and donated the Christmas table decoration which was made as part of the evening. After all the excitement, in the absence of Marion Cramp our President, Lynne Burns then had to control the members while the AGM took place. This must follow a formula with officers giving their annual reports. Then, as Marion had informed the committee that she would be standing down as President, nominations were called for. Lynne Burns was nominated and duly elected by a unanimous show of hands. Jill Forward was also standing down from committee this year, but three volunteers from the membership will be welcomed at the December committee meeting. These are Jane Hey, Carol Alexander and Sue Kirkbride. The December meeting will be the Christmas dinner but before that we shall be decorating a Christmas Tree as part of the Eastington Christmas tree Festival meetings begin on Thursday 4th January at the Village Hall, and the WI Patchwork group will be holding and exhibition of their work. Visitors are always welcome, just come along for a 7.30 start on the first Thursday of each month. The full programme for 2018 will appear in next month s newsletter. 50 Sheep Racing On a mild September afternoon crowds arrived for the annual sheep racing in the Park. This year there were many more attractions that before and people took full advantage of them. We slightly changed the format this year. All the stalls and attractions were offered to local charities or good causes to run for their own direct benefit. Examples were the James Hopkins Trust, the Dursley Air Cadets, Perryway Players, Fretherne Church etc. Between them they all raised just under Those who took a race and gathered sponsorship for their own chosen good causes raised just over Taken together this, we feel, is success enough to justify the effort that everyone puts into the day. We are still calculating the profits from the things that the Fund Raisers manage, Bar, BBQ and the Tote. However, we are confident that we will be able to make a good distribution to local and national good causes, after retaining enough in the funds to ensure we can run the event next year. We could not manage without the support of many people and the actual volunteers on the day. In particular we must thank Mr & Mrs Clifford for the use of the grounds and their sheep; JR Building for their main sponsorship and Attwoolls and Smiths for offering equipment to be used on the day. To all who helped set up, take down and perform all of the jobs needed on the day, VERY MANY THANKS. Concert starts at 7.30pm or call at Bullfinch Cottage,The Street Frampton-on-Severn Info and tickets also from

It is hard to believe and getting harder to remember what the Shoes was like before we took it over. It has been a busy 2 months since the last newsletter and our pies continue to please. People are very kind and complimentary we get some fantastic reviews on Trip Advisor who recently gave us our third annual certificate of excellence. We have successfully catered for large groups of 25 plus too nerve racking at first but not too daunting now we've a few under our belt. Pixie our little Jack Russell had a lump removed from her head luckily it was benign and she has now healed but she did have several weeks wearing a 'lampshade' much to her annoyance. All is well now. We had a fun night for Halloween with lots of little visitors from around the village. Our annual Halloween fancy dress had a pirate theme this year and a huge thanks must go our to all the customers who made the night such a success there were some amazing costumes. The pasty competition was nail biting and closely fought. In the end Ian Hutchinson won by 1 mark and took the Pasty Meister trophy with a chicken, bacon and veg filling in puff pastry. Robin Wheeler came a close 2nd with his delicious sausage and lentil pasty with shortcrust pastry. Well done to both. The fires in both the lounge and bar have been lit daily for several weeks now so we are all cosy, ready for the winter and looking forward to getting the Christmas decorations up although I promise we won't put them up until December. Bill Church is hosting an evening of Poetry, music and story telling on Wed 6th December starting 8pm. This is becoming another much enjoyed annual event. Our Monday and Wednesday music groups are both coming in the week before Christmas to play some Christmas Tunes. Please come along and join in the festive spirit. - see details below. We have some sad news though, Peggy our lovely barmaid has left us. She is. saving to go travelling again and now has a full time job which obviously pays more and gives her free time at the weekend. 61 Frampton Shed Appreciation Society It is a great pleasure to be able to record a turnout in double figures at the September gathering, including two new recruits of whom more later. The Chairman opened proceedings with a long and detailed exposition of his shedding plans, describing lovingly his proposed recreation shed alongside his working shed, but when he expanded on these to include thoughts of a swimming pool he rather lost conviction and the attention of the assembled company, but overall it was an inspiring demonstration of the enthusiasm expected of a true shedder. Things took a slight turn for the worse with the sombre news that the Shed Constructor to the Community had had a wall fall out of his shed, but he had been so busy looking after other people s sheds that this confession was received with sympathy rather than derision. With the onset of Meteorological Autumn it was now safe to announce that his Summer Shed had been a success. Another shedder had returned from the Middle East that day and showing no signs of jet lag or travel fatigue regaled the company with his progress in filling his sheds Nos. 1 4 to maximum capacity. They are now so full of stuff that he can no longer get into Shed no.4 or even recall what is in it. This is of course what would amount to Nirvana if he were a Buddhist, and his announcement of this exploit was received with the muted applause it deserved, and future consideration will have to be given to awarding him the accolade as a Shedi Knight. A senior shedder reported that his shed contained his special car under a sheet (mis-heard as sheep by a member from the Forest - they do things differently there, of course). It (the car not the sheep) is allegedly ready to burst into life at a moment s notice. Cars being displaced from garages by stuff (incautiously described as dross by one misguided member - guidance will be given at a suitable moment) was a common theme, so that having a garage containing an actual car in common use began to seem rather shameful. If we may now turn now to our new recruits, one had come all the way from South Africa to take responsibility for filling with people no less than fifteen pointy stone-built sheds scattered across the Stroud Deanery or at least getting them to pay attention to his message in other locations. Although these sheds are presently not very often full of live people they are fairly fully occupied in a subterraneous sense, as it were. He was clearly of the right stuff having arrived by motor bike and he was wished every success in his daunting task. The other welcome new member deserves a particular accolade for joining in our carnivorous feast despite being a vegan and somehow making a meal of chips, peas and onion rings: respect. The rest of us enjoyed The Bell s usual high quality fare of steak and attentive service to the full, but he is made of stern stuff and we hope he will be back. A confession followed of a convoluted tale, almost incestuous in shedding terms as it involved alterations to the separate sheds of two members which rather unusually stand back to back -- almost semi-detached but not quite, and the process of ensuring that the gap between them stays weather proof. On hearing the word flashing one member woke up with a start, but realising that he had misunderstood the topic sensibly went back to sleep again. Another shedder recorded his intense satisfaction at having actually made some money from his shedding activities! He had manufactured a crucial piece of plumbing (unobtainable on the retail market) out of some lead he had put aside years ago thereby demonstrating the material reward from obeying the Shedders Commandments. Again all mention of politics was studiously avoided and harmony reigned, in contrast to what has been going on, or not going on, in Brussels.

66 Frampton in Focus Each issue we spend 10 minutes talking to someone who lives or works in Frampton, and share our findings with you. This time we ve been talking to Dr Charles Buckley What did you have for breakfast today? A mug of tea and crumpets with marmalade. How did you come to be living in Frampton? My family moved to Russell House here in Frampton when I was 10. That was when my father John (also a GP) took over the doctor s surgery from Dr Boultbee who d been practising here for many years. In those days there was one village doctor and the surgery was in the little white annexe alongside the house. You had to buy the house to get the job! Did you always know you wanted to be doctor? The Buckley family is riddled with medics, so it was always on the cards. Whether or not it was predestined, I knew from an early age that I wanted to work in medicine. Having qualified as a GP in 1979 and enjoyed life elsewhere, including a stint as a junior doctor in Congo, I settled back here with Susie and our children in 1985 to work alongside my father in the surgery. In those days we had what s called an open surgery, which means there were no appointments (and certainly no computers). People simply turned up and were seen straight away, or as soon as we could get to them. Can you tell us a bit about the surgery today? We bought the land on Whitminster Lane from local landowner Reg Davies, and built the surgery as everyone now knows it back in 1993 which was when Anne and Peter Spargo joined as GPs and the practice became considerably larger. These days we look after around 5,000 patients, most living within around a 6 mile radius. What is it like to work as a GP in the village you also call home? Overall it works very well. I feel extraordinarily privileged to have known so many families so well for so long, and I hope those relationships help give the surgery a more relaxed ambience. It used not to be unusual for GPs to live on their patch, but that s changed over the years for various reasons. Can you tell me something about the two trusts which the surgery helps administer? The Pinching Memorial Trust was set up on the death of William Pinching who was the village GP in Frampton many moons ago, and the John Buckley Memorial Trust was set up when my father died. They re funded by proceeds from a range of sources including local fundraising events, at the surgery when fees are payable for certain services we donate those to the trusts and, for example, bereaved families sometimes request that donations be made instead of funeral flowers. Broadly speaking, the funds are then used to help promote the good physical and mental health of people living locally, and distributed in response to the applications we receive. If time allows, what do you do to relax? I am a great reader, and there are so many books in the house that Susie and I often joke about opening a second hand bookshop. I particularly like science writing. Right now I am enjoying a fascinating book by Alice Roberts called The Incredible Human Journey. Reading aside, Susie and I love to travel, and over the years have enjoyed exploring many different countries including Syria, Iran and Egypt. Do you have a favourite part of Frampton? Walks around the lake and canal are always lovely, but it s the community here which really makes it for me. A lot of local people put a great deal of time, effort and energy into making things happen and helping village life here be full and fun. I also like that Frampton isn t a dormitory village. Many villagers commute to work of course, but the village doesn t empty at 8am and refill at 6pm it s still full of people going about their daily lives all day every day. Name a favourite book/film/piece of music/tv programme? It s difficult to choose but I do think David Attenborough s Blue Planet II series is stunning. Interview by Sarah McCurrich
