Dear Friends, We celebrate Pentecost this year on Sunday 20 May. Pentecost was the day when in fulfilment of Christ s promise the Holy Spirit was sent and gave birth to the Church. We read, of course, in the Acts of the Apostles how the Church grew phenomenally in those first few days. In fact, on Pentecost Sunday we re starting a new series called Empowered for Sunday ministry across all ages and for our Lifegroups. This new series on the book of Acts will show us just how the Holy Spirit who was so active in the early Church can still be active in our Church today. I hope you ll join us as we go on this adventure and know ourselves empowered for life and for service. All around the world, in the lead up to Pentecost from Ascension Day (10-20 May), churches of all denominations are pledging to pray Thy Kingdom Come. The particular focus is for people to pray for family and friends who are not yet Christians. At OBC we re going to set-aside our Prayer Room as a creative prayer space once again. Danny Brown has come up with all sorts of different interactive ideas to inspire our praying. Talking of prayer, can I ask for your prayers for two things happening in May: Our leadership (Trustee/Deacons and our Ministry Team) have an awayday at the St Benedict s Centre in West Malling on Saturday 12 May. Please remember us as we take time out from busy agendas to reflect on the oversight of the Church as a whole. Pray that we might know God s presence guiding and leading us. Please also pray as we start Discipleship Explored on a monthly basis from Thursday 31 May. I m excited to see already the number of people who have booked to come and I hope there will be more. Please pray that God will use use this excellent course to deepen our discipleship as we seek to follow Jesus. In a phrase that s used of the Church following Pentecost Day may everyone be filled with awe (Acts 2.43). With love in Christ, 1

Intentionality is becoming a bit of a buzz word in church culture at the moment, specifically within Youth and Children work. It s partly down to the changes in our traditional models of working. Gone are the days when young people could expect to spend every other day in church at activities, discipleship groups, socials and band rehearsals. It s not because we re getting lazy, it s because life as a young person is a lot busier, there s more demand on their time with schoolwork, sports clubs and other things that come with leading a modern life. So we have to be intentional. The chance encounters with young people have to be opportunities where we listen to their problems, speak wisdom into their lives and pray that something of God is communicated. For some of the young people that call OBC their church, these are the only encounters we will have with them until June as exam pressures, early nights and revision timetables get in the way or their normal routines. Throughout all of this we as a youth team are committed to sharing the love that we have for God with the young people we encounter, it just takes a slightly different format. We pray for these opportunities and encounters with young people who have been locked away in their revision sheds ; that they will know the peace and love of God in these stressful times and that they will know all at OBC are waiting to welcome, support and encourage them. Please pray for all our young people taking end of year, GSCE and A level exams over the next couple of months. DB 2

We continue to follow the same Bible subjects in Kidzone and OK Group as taught in our Lifegroups and Sunday morning services. This term we are encouraging our children to think beyond Easter through DVD, games, crafts, stories etc. A couple of weeks into our new programme we provided the children with opportunities to respond in their own artistic ways in different work stations around the room, see pictures of some of their creativity. As we continue to help each of our children root themselves in Christ I am always looking around for resources that inspire me further and I came across Parenting Children for a Life of Faith by Rachel Turner. Upon completion of this excellent book I texted a number of parents of children in Kidzone suggesting they read a copy and I hope you find it just as valuable as I did? On Friday 29th June we are hosting our next CTO children s event at St Nicks, Leamington Avenue, BR6 9QB from 4:45pm to 7pm called Big Breakfast Summer Special Bash. Booking forms will be available from me in due course. This event is open to all children in primary school reception to year six inclusive. 3

Pray Bake for Spinnaker Schools is taking place again this year and if you are new to the concept please read on: Towards the end of the summer term we like to encourage our primary school staff by taking in homemade cakes and a Spinnaker letter. The letters informs the staff that the cakes are from the local church as way of encouragement. If you would like to find out more then please do have a chat with me. Our own church Holiday Bible Club will be operating during the school summer holidays. The dates are Tuesday 7th Friday 10th August from 10am to 12 noon. If you are available and interested in helping then please do let me know. Are you a Church Member? Everyone who comes to OBC is an important member of our Church Family. But if you d like to take your commitment to God s work at OBC a step further and be involved in decision-making by becoming a Church Member (which will give you a vote at our Church Family Meetings) please pick up a leaflet from the Welcome Desk. Talk to Martyn or Danny for more details. 4

Prayer for our Pastor A recent Forbes magazine article listed "Pastor" and "Minister" in the top 5 toughest leadership roles. Pastors are on the front lines and need the prayers of the congregation to fulfil their role of shepherding God's people. As part of the prayer ministry team here at OBC, I would like to encourage you to pray regularly for our Minister, Martyn. Sometimes it can be difficult to know exactly what to pray for, so I have listed some biblical suggestions, but by all means do ask Martyn what else he would like prayer for! Please do encourage him by letting him know you are praying or where you see God's glory at work in our church. These prayers can also be used to pray for our Leadership team too. He be filled with all spiritual wisdom and knowledge of God's will He be filled with spiritual understanding and encouragement He will continue to walk worthy of the Lord He be strengthened with God's power He be protected against Satan He will find opportunities to relax and have value time with his family He will stand firm for the principles of God's word He will be inspired and encouraged in his daily work and preaching Lorraine Dixon Ephesians

The Explorers (5-8 yrs) have enjoyed a Countries badge recently. They explored different countries, looking at their clothing and housing, tasting the local food and learning how to say a few words in their language. They also found out how we, in Britain, are able to offer help to those in need. This term, our young leaders have been working in different sections, expanding their leadership skills after their recent training. There are three levels of young leader training, each involves a residential weekend training session, and at least 6 weeks working within the company. In the Brigader section (14+ yrs), two advanced young leaders ran the programme Read all about it. This encompassed discussions and activities about current affairs and news items. Whilst in the Senior section an advanced young leader ran the programme assisted by an intermediate young leader, where the focus was on the girls lifestyle, wellbeing and health. This used dance, cooking and relaxation to bring the subject to life. All sections are now preparing for our annual display with the Boys Brigade, which takes place on Saturday 19th May, 6.30pm at Kemnal Technology College, Sevenoaks Way. All are welcome to join our young people as they display a little of what goes on during a year in the Brigades. We look forward to seeing you there and thank you for your continued support and prayers for the Brigades. Jenny Tompsett Thank you so much to everyone who has gone into Costa Coffee Orpington High Street and put some money on the gift card in the drawer by the till. It's a really easy way to show the generosity of God to our community. If you are not sure what this is about then do ask me or my Mum we'd love to explain it to you! Thank you. 12 Parish Nursing launched at OBC in December Through the drop in clinic at Sanctuary Café, and other opportunities, I've engaged with well over 100 clients, checking blood pressures (and finding quite a few high readings!), giving health promotion advice, and generally offering support and prayer for health related issues. However, since becoming a Mum, and returning to the NHS part time, it's been challenging to find ways, and energy, to fulfil the role of Parish Nurse in the way that I would wish. After prayer and discussion with Martyn, we've therefore agreed to conclude the role. Thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement as I stepped out in faith and during the course of Parish Nursing at OBC. I hope that caring for the whole person, body, mind and spirit, will continue to be at the forefront of our mission as a church. "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:10 NIV Thank yofï so much Helen for yofïr care and Helen Pourak professional insight since yofï haffīe been serving as ofïr Parish Nurse. God bless nfïrses (and the NHS)! With loffïe from yofïr Chfïrch Family. Pentecost United Celebration 10

PRAY for an end to the violence we see and hear about on the streets of London that the authorities will see and tackle the root cause and take action to bring healing for Christian charities and churches working to offer hope Below are two such charities we can pray for: Matt House, who used to be a youth worker here at OBC now works in Shadwell with XLP. Find out more about the fantastic work they re doing at: 12

Some friends may not know that we operate several Prayer Chains as a Church. Both via the internet and/or phone we can get people praying for urgent needs across the Church family on the same day. It's always good to get the person's permission before we make this happen as it can be a blessing to them just to know that the Church is praying. With the prayer need please be in touch with Martyn or the Church Office who action the Prayer Chains. We re always open to new friends joining one of the Prayer Chains; if you would like to do that please tell us and we will gladly make it happen. We believe in the power of united prayer and want to see prayers being answered for each other. After becoming seriously ill in 1982 with a virus that confined her with constant pain to a wheelchair for eight years, she was healed through the prayer of a new Christian at a meeting at which she was speaking. She has also experienced a broken marriage. Since then the Lord has focused her ministry on helping people adjust to pain, loss and trauma. 14

God s Double Agent In March Bob Fu gave a spellbinding address to a packed meeting organised by Release International at OBC. His book, with the above title (copies on stand in foyer to borrow) gives his life story in more detail from a childhood of extreme poverty and famine during Mao s Great Leap Forward in the 1950s, student activism, the repression that followed the Tiananmen Square massacre, house church leader and trainer, imprisonment, escape to the West. The title of the book refers to the time when his day job was teaching English to communist party officials whilst secretly leading house churches and organising secret training for pastors. Bob founded and now runs China Aid, an organisation that advocates for the burgeoning and fiercely persecuted Chinese church as well as for lawyers and activists who risk their lives and welfare standing up for freedom. If you wish to be informed of the astonishing revival in mainland China amidst persecution this is the book to read. There are thought to be upwards of 100 million Chinese Christians (up from 10 million in the 1980s) At this rate China could be the largest Christian country by mid century! God s word surely will not be chained. This year is the 50th anniversary of the founding of Release International by Rumanian pastor, Richard Wurmbrand who himself suffered severe mistreatment whilst imprisoned. See the display on the mission notice board next to the kitchen hatch. The display highlights Richard s life story and his call to the western church not to forget the underground persecuted church, which we do not at OBC. Peter Johnson 15

Living Justly You may have seen that a new group has started looking into the call of Christians to live in an unjust world. We are seeking to help one another to understand how God wants us to live in a way that seeks justice. Over our three meetings we have focused on two Micah 6:8 specific areas. The first is broadly titled Ecology and looks at the implications of climate change and the damage to our environment. The other has been on Social Justice and recently more specifically on housing. In our discussion on housing and homelessness we have looked at the causes and consequences and particularly focused on single people. Compared with fifty years ago, young people settle down with partners much later, usually into their thirties or even older. This impacts on the demand for housing. For those who need to leave home, finding a place to live on your own is difficult and expensive. The problem is most acute for single men. It is rare and expensive for developers to build units for one (or even two!). Local councils do not have such accommodation, either. Sofa surfing, that is sleeping on the sofa or even the floor of a friend s flat, is one option. The friend is usually one of a pair. You can imagine the implications. For those without accommodation or a job, there is a double whammy. You can t get a job without an address and you can t get an address (or the money to pay for it) unless you have a job. There is much talk of affordable housing but much of it is not affordable to the single earner, especially here in Orpington. What do we as Christians do about this? Is praying sufficient? What other kind of action could we take? This is the kind of issue we are looking into as we meet together. We are also open to new members. If you are interested, contact Alison Dennis, kevidennis@hotmail.com Tony Cross 16

Is God calling yofï to join the Orpington Street Pastors team? We re especially keen to recruit new members who reflect the multicultural demographic of our area. If you can offer one Friday a month between 9.00pm and midnight and can be available for Saturday training sessions in Brixton then please have a chat with Marg or one of the OBC Street Pastors. 20 Starting on Pentecost Sunday we begin a new sermon and study series Empowered looking at the way the Holy Spirit who was so active in the Early Church can also be active in our Church today. Our children and young people will be following the same themes and our Lifegroups give an opportunity to study deeper and share insight together. Not yet in a Lifegrofĭp? These small groups meet in homes across Orpington on weekday evenings and daytime at OBC for sharing, praying and caring for each other. They re a great way to get to know people. If you d like to know more speak to Martyn, Danny or the church office. 10th - 20th May Come and join Churches around the world to pray for your family and friends who are not yet Christians Prayer Room at OBC All welcome If you can t come when the church is open please contact the church office to fix a time 18

I Have a Dream Many of you will be familiar with Martin Luther King and one of his most renowned speeches, I have a dream. April 2018 marks the 60th anniversary of his assassination and so it seems poignant to remind ourselves of his dream. When Martin Luther King was first called to serve God, he became a Baptist minister. He had a young family and his church and they were both his passion. When the young Rosa Parks sat in the coloured section of the bus and was asked to stand for a white man, she refused and so started the Montgomery bus boycott. Martin Luther King, as a local minister, was asked to get involved and at first he refused, scared for his young family. Then he knew he had to do what was right and support racial justice in America, especially in the South where they had the most inhuman segregation legislation, enshrined in documents such as the Georgia Code Book. This marked the beginning of a short but powerful ministry and a legacy so impactful that without it, it is hard to imagine how much worse life would be for African Americans today. Had he not followed his heart this would never have happened. We have seen the glory of the Lord and how He is working in those who answer His call. Martin Luther King is evidence of such a call. At 39 years old he was assassinated and died immediately as the bullet severed his spinal cord at the neck. The day before he died he made his final speech, I ve been to the mountaintop and many question whether he knew at this point that he would die. In his final publicly spoken words he said, I ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. And so I m happy tonight; I m not worried about anything; I m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. 20

So ask yourself today what is the Lord calling you to do; how does He want you to step out of your comfort zone? What do we need to do on this racial justice agenda in our church and in our community and how can you support that? In the words of Martin Luther King, And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God s children...will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty we are free at last! ( I have a dream 28 August 1963). Sharon Ferguson After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. Revelation 7: 9 Go onto the BUGB website to read an article about this anniverary in the Baptist Times: And here you can read an article from our own Tony Cross: We do hope that you are looking forward to joining us this year on our Holiday at Home Application forms will be available soon for those who want to come. The dates are Monday 30 July for our outing and Weds August 1 and Thursday August 2 for our days at OBC. We look forward to all that God has in store for us as we holiday together this year!!! If you have any pretty teacups with matching saucers that you no longer need and would be happy to let us have, we could use them for some craft ideas! Please give them to Viv Cox or Jo Lewis. 21

One of the great features of being a member of the Boys Brigade is the ability to take part in a wide range of activities. Boys can participate in football, swimming, table tennis and badminton to name but a few, but can also learn to play an instrument and be a part of our band. There are so many opportunities to get involved and it always disappoints me when boys do not take advantage of what is on offer. Alongside these activities, boys can also achieve important awards as they progress through the company. On one Saturday in March, we had thirteen boys on courses. This has enabled seven boys to achieve their President s Badge and a further six boys to gain their Queen s Badge, which is the highest award that a boy can attain. Those same six boys have also completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards. These achievements are something that the boys should be proud of as they have each put in a lot of hard work. They are also something worth including in the boys personal statements and CV s as universities and employers are always keen to see what they are capable of outside of school. We hope to present all of these awards at the Display on Saturday 19 May. The Display will be held at Kemnal Technology College and starts at 6.30pm and all are welcome to attend. We hope to see you all there! Rob Wolfe Captain JOINT DISPLAY Saturday 19 May 6.30pm Kemnal College, Sevenoaks Way, St Paul s Cray ALL WELCOME 23

AMOS & FAIRTRADE The book of Amos is not usually the first place in the Bible one goes for a message, but, nevertheless, it has much to teach us today. Amos was a shepherd and a grower of figs living in the southern kingdom of Judah but God tells him to go and preach to the kingdom of Israel in the north. He has a novel way of getting the people's attention. He begins by naming the sins and wrongdoings of all the nations around Israel so that those listening can nod their heads in agreement at the shortcomings of their neighbours: Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon, Moab and Judah. And he's getting close to home now. And then he strikes. 'This is what the Lord says, the people of Israel have sinned again and again and I will not forget it. They have perverted justice by selling honest people for a pair of sandals. (Amos 2:6). Is not this world guilty of similar sins by forcing people into slavery in sweat shops and brothels? 'They trample helpless people in the dust and deny justice to those who are oppressed.' (2:7). How many desperate folk have given all they have to be taken across dangerous waters in the hope of finding a better life in the west? 'You measure out your grain in false measures and weigh it out on dishonest scales. And you mix the wheat you sell with chaff swept from the floor! Then you enslave poor people for a debt of one piece of silver and a pair of sandals.' (8:6). I have just been reading a report from a British missionary in Uganda who witnesses poor farmers being sold sterile seeds which produce crops for only one year so that the farmer is forced to buy fresh seed each year. It would seem that the most condemning word from the Lord, is surely this: 'I will not listen to your music, no matter how lovely it is. Instead, I want to see a mighty flood of justice, a river of righteous living that will never run dry.' (5:23). So, bringing the message home, do we need to ask ourselves how much we contribute, albeit innocently, to injustice in the world. To be fair, our personal financial situation may be to blame if we cannot afford that item which would pay the producer a fair price. However, maybe we should consider paying a bit more for say, bananas, chocolate, coffee, tea and cotton goods that are Fairtrade. It would be good if we were not absently supporting those who exploit the poor or have no thought for the good of our world. Let's be prayerful and thoughtful about these matters and come to worship with pure hearts and sing our praises to the Lord who has made all things good. He says 'Come back to me and live'. Amos 5:4.
