1 Knights of Columbus Cd913.org Issue No. 4 DECEMBER Greetings From the Navigator My Brother Sir Knights, First play I acted in: Teddy Bear s Picnic in 2 nd Grade. First movie I acted in: LADDER 49 First TV Show I acted in: THE WIRE (Seasons 3, 4, and 5) First TV gig: WRIC-TV8 Richmond, VA Weekend Weather. First Radio gig: WMAL Weather Consultant Telephone Meteorologist for Washington, DC 1981 to present. In November, we honored those who have passed with All Saints Day and All Souls Day and gave thanks to veterans who have given us the gift of freedom. The Assembly held its annual Memorial Mass at Our Lady of Fatima in Secane where we remembered 62 Knights who have returned to our Lord. The Color Corps attended a training session in King of Prussia. Eight members from our Assembly successfully completed the training session required for District and Provincial Events. Congratulations and thank you for representing the Assembly at this training session. Another training opportunity will be presented sometime in the spring. November was a busy and reflective month. December brings the season of Advent. During Advent, which means coming, we prepare our hearts for the birth of our Savior. We decorate our homes, donate to those less fortunate, enjoy cultural and family 1 traditions, and gather with family and friends to celebrate His coming. We exchange gifts in thanksgiving and remembrance of the gift that GOD, Our Father gave Us-- His Son the ultimate gift. On December 4, The Assembly is planning on having a Wreath Laying Ceremony at 2 PM at the Delaware County Veterans Memorial in Newtown Square. All are welcome to attend, (Color Corps especially needed), as we remember those who died when we were attacked on December 7, 1941 in Pearl Harbor. We also will remember all veterans from all wars and especially those who were veterans since 1882 who were also members of the Knights of Columbus. After the holidays we will begin to plan our 97th Dinner Dance, in honor of our Past Faithful Navigator, Michael Vecchione. Remember to mark your calendar for Saturday, February 25 for this enjoyable event. Our annual Communion Breakfast is planned to take place in March. Exemplification planning will begin in January with a Kick-Off meeting for all councils within the assembly. Details will be forthcoming in the near future. Finally, discussions have started concerning the Cardinal Dougherty Assembly s 100th anniversary. I welcome your suggestions on how best to celebrate this milestone. Neal Pizzano Faithful Navigator, CDA 913 A Message from our Faithful Friar A Christmas Preparation With the turning of the calendar page to the month of December, it seems that naturally, in a more focused way, our minds turn toward the upcoming celebration of Christmas, the commemoration of the Nativity of Jesus, on December 25th. The Church gives us the privileged season of Advent as a sacred means of preparing for and remembering the first coming of Jesus- King of Kings, Lord of Lord, Prince of Peace, and Emmanuel- God with us. This same month of December, through the Church s liturgical calendar, presents us also with two significant feasts of the Blessed Mother which can deepen our grounding as we approach the solemn celebration of the Birth of Jesus. On December 8th, we observe the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary who, through the mystical and prevenient grace of Jesus Christ bestowed beforehand, was preserved, at her conception, from the stain of original sin thereby preparing her to be the perfect and worthy Mother of Jesus, the Word made flesh. This celebration connects us clearly with the observance of Christmas. December 12th is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe who appeared to St. Juan Diego in a series of apparitions in December of 1531 and through her imprint on the tilma of Juan Diego appeared as the pregnant Mother of Jesus. Again, we can see the association of this feast with that of the celebration of Christmas. These two feasts also carry a significance for the Catholic Church in the United States. In 1846, the Council of Baltimore declared the Blessed Mother to be the patroness of the United States under the title of the Immaculate Conception and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, in Washington D.C., honors her in this way. Also, Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the Americas as well as the protectoress of the unborn as signified through the pregnant Mother of Guadalupe. With the observance of these two liturgical celebrations, we can prepare well our hearts and souls for the celebration of Christmas. So we pray: O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee and Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us! 2 Fr. Dennis Weber, SdC

Membership The next Exemplification of the Fourth Degree is scheduled for Sunday May 28, 2017 at the Doubletree Hotel in King of Prussia. The first step in a man s journey to the Patriotic Degree is to become a Knight of Columbus. There is still time for a Catholic man to become a Knight Before Christmas if you give him the opportunity. There is an Admission Degree scheduled for 7:30 PM on Tuesday December 13, 2016 at Peace Council. Dinner Dance 2017 The annual CDA Dinner Dance is scheduled for February 25, 2016 at 6:00 PM at a location to be determined. This year s Honoree will be Past Faithful Navigator Mike Vecchione. 4 Veterans Service Project Father Weber has challenged us to do something special for our veterans this fraternal year. One of the things that came up was to collect donated items that we can send to our veterans oversees this holiday season. We have a number of members in our assembly dedicated to serving our veterans. There are two guys in particular who collect and send items to our troops all year round. They are SK Jerry DiMartini and SK Harry Mirra. CDA is devoted to serving veteran groups including: Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, AMVETS, and the American Legion. Please bring the following items to the Dec. 7, 2016 Conclave. If you would like to donate items but cannot make the Conclave, please contact Jerry DiMartini at: jerryde0210@yahoo.com to arrange donations. We can even make this an even bigger success if we include our councils and ask for their donations. Let's make Father Weber's challenge a huge success!!
