Attended Public Schools in Montgomery County Maryland Attended CCD at St. Jude Catholic Church in Rockville, MD Graduated from Robert E. Peary HS Montgomery Jr. College, & University of Phoenix (all in Rockville, MD) I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas Day with family and or friends. Did Saint Nicholas treat you well? Five months of the Columbian year have passed. We have a few days left of the Christmas Season to celebrate before we enter ordinary time. With the birth of Christ, the world was given hope that we all could be saved and be given an opportunity to enter the Kingdom of God. With the coming of the New Year, we hope that the next 365 days will give us opportunities to live a better life than last year, which includes the chance to make right our wrongs. Later this month, we inaugurate a new president of the United States. Let s all join together and pray that he will move the country forward in a way that heals the wounds of discrimination and creates better 1 opportunities for the middle class and poor. Let s also pray that he saves Christian morals instead of degrading them in the name of political correctness. We have hope that this leader will work to provide a better direction for our nation. Here is a quick overview of our assembly s work over the last month: The Assembly honored those who gave their lives in the attack at Pearl Harbor 75 years ago with a wreath laying ceremony on December 4, which took place at the Delaware County Veterans Memorial in Newtown Square. A number of attendees at the December Conclave donated care packages, comprised of food and various items for the troops overseas. The location for the 97th Dinner Dance was determined. The event will be hosted at Peace Council Home in Crum Lynne on February 25, just 3 days before Mardi Gras (a.k.a. Shrove Tuesday). Bring your party on and come out and celebrate with us as we honor our immediate Past Faithful Navigator Michael Vecchione! The cost will remain the same as last year ($55 per person). Look for additional details elsewhere in the newsletter. We plan to contact every Council in the Assembly for a gathering later this month to discuss the Exemplification. We are going to promote the 4th Degree and see how many candidates each assembly plans to bring to the Exemplification. More information will be forwarded via later this month.

2 Discussions took place at the Conclave about the 100th Anniversary of our Assembly. It was decided that the Anniversary Committee will be made up of Past Faithful Navigators. However, your suggestions as to where to hold the event, the type of meals we should consider, and decorating suggestions are welcome and appreciated. We have NOT received any suggestions to date. We encourage your input now. Please your ideas and suggestions to Subject: CDA 100 year Anniversary. Finally, we are looking for your input at our Conclave meetings. Please consider coming to our meetings located at Peace Council Home in Crum Lynne. We are still planning to hold a couple of fund raising events this year. We encourage your participation at these events. Vivat Jesus, Neal Pizzano Faithful Navigator, CDA 913 A Message from our Faithful Friar On Christian Hope Look, Daddy. Teacher says, Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings! This observation by the 6 year old Zuzu Bailey, played by Karolyn Grimes, to her father George Bailey, played by Jimmy Stewart, were exclaimed near the end of the inspirational Christmas classic, It s a Wonderful Life. Karolyn has traveled for many years speaking about this film and even wrote a book entitled, It s a Wonderful Life: How the Movie s Message of Hope Lives On. Pope Francis recently began a series of catecheses or teachings, during his Wednesday General audiences, on the theme of Christian hope and ostensibly reminds us that the message of hope lives on, especially in the person of Jesus Christ, and that we are called as Christians to believe and live in that hope found in Jesus Christ. Near the beginning of his first catechesis on this theme, The Holy Father said: Optimism disappoints, but hope does not; and we have a great need for it, in these times that appear bleak, in which at times we feel lost when faced with the evil and the violence that surround us, before the suffering of so many of our brothers. We need hope. Indeed, we do need hope and our faith in Jesus Christ as Savior, who won for us the victory over sin and death, is sustained and deepened with a life of hope. Our hope in Jesus strengthens our faith in Him and when hope wanes our faith may also wane. Pope Francis, in the General Audience presented on the Wednesday before Christmas, speaks of Jesus in light of His birth and this virtue of hope: He (Jesus) enters the world and gives us the strength to journey with Him: God walks with us in Jesus, and walking with Him towards the fullness of life gives us the strength to stay in a new way in the present, even if it is burdensome. So, for a Christian to hope means the certainty of journeying with Christ towards the Father Who awaits us. Hope is never still, hope is always in motion and enables us to walk on. This hope, that the Child of Bethlehem gives us, offers an objective, a good destiny for the present, the salvation of humanity, blessedness to those who trust in a merciful God. St. Paul summarizes all this in the expression, For in this hope we were saved. 2

3 As we begin the journey of another year, that of 2017, let us, in hope, journey with Jesus towards the Father during this year knowing that this journey with Jesus enables us to walk on faithfully as disciples of Jesus Christ with a longing and desire for eternal life. We begin each year, on January 1st, with the celebration of the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. May we turn to Mary, Our Lady of Hope, as we walk with her Son knowing that in this hope we were saved. Fr. Membership: The next Exemplification of the Fourth Degree is scheduled for Sunday May 28, 2017 at the Doubletree Hotel in King of Prussia. The first step in a man s journey to the Patriotic Degree is to become a Knight of Columbus. There is still time for a Catholic man to become a Knight in time to make the Patriotic Degree in May if you give them the opportunity. There is an Admission Degree scheduled for 7:30 PM on Tuesday December 13, 2016 at Peace Council. Dinner Dance 2017: The annual CDA Dinner Dance is scheduled for 6:00 PM on February 25, 2016 at a Peace Council, 1195 Haverford Road, Crum Lynne, PA. This year s Honoree will be Past Faithful Navigator Mike Vecchione. The cost remains $55 per person for a choice of Chicken Marsala or Salmon. See attached form to make reservations or place an ad. 4 Wreath Laying Ceremony December 4, 2016 Delaware County Veterans Memorial Newtown Square, Pennsylvania On December 4th, we laid a wreath at the Delaware County Veterans Memorial in Newtown Square, PA. The purpose was to honor those who died 75 years ago in the attack at Pearl Harbor; to honor those who have died in all military conflicts since 1882; and to honor those who continue to fight for our freedoms today. 5 Honor and Remember Flag Worthy Brother Sir Knights, 75 years ago, this coming Wednesday, the world changed forever. The United States was brutally attacked early in the morning in a place called Pearl Harbor in the U.S. Territory of Hawaii. 2,403 Americans died in the attack. The next day, President Roosevelt, spoke of the tragedy and Congress declared War. For the next four years, Americans sacrificed their former routines to join our Allies to defeat the evils that threatened the freedoms we have. Over 183, 500 sacrificed their lives in the Atlantic & European Theaters and over 108, 500 in the Pacific Theater, all of which included 14, 059 POWs who died in captivity. Total U.S. losses for WW2 topped 419,000. Since the days of World War 2, The U.S. has been involved in 15 major conflicts around the world, including, but not limited to, Korea, Vietnam, Kuwait, Iraq, Kosovo, and Afghanistan. Our military personnel have continued the mission to defeat the enemies that threaten our freedoms. Their ultimate sacrifices are what we are honoring today. Since 1882, when the Knights of Columbus was created, over 1,250,000 Military personnel have lost their lives in conflicts. I do not have the number of Knights that gave their lives in Service to our Country, but we are here today to say thanks to them, and to all military personnel who have given their lives to keep Our Constitution intact. To those who lost their lives 75 years ago in Pearl Harbor, We Salute You! To those who have sacrificed their lives in all conflicts to preserve our Freedoms, We Salute You! To those who continue to represent Our Country by wearing a military uniform and sacrifice their routines to work toward keeping the evils that threaten our country in check, We Salute You!
