IMMANUEL EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH 421 North Second Street Mankato, Minnesota (507) Word of Truth Jesus says, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:15) Mission Festival The 5th Sunday in Lent March 13, 2016 Volume 79, No. 17 Deacon: Leif Olmanson; Organist: Karla Olmanson Sound: Joshua Clobes; Video: Paul & Diane Bode; Screen: Russell Schmitt Head Usher: Paul Bade; Asst. Usher: Justin Mueller WELCOME to ALL! Visitors: please sign the guest register in the narthex. Visitors and members should feel free to speak with the Pastor after the service, or call: for Pastor Nolting or for Pastor Eichstadt. Pre-Service Meditation: Psalm 98 (p. 144, red hymnal) Pre-Service Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, as I join my fellow believers in worship today, fill all of our hearts with a zeal for the work of missions. Help me and others to understand the true nature of our great spiritual needs, of Your amazing love, and of the salvation You have so graciously prepared for all human beings. Impress upon us a sense of urgency, for souls are at stake. Move us to share Your truths with others as You give us opportunity, so that many will join us in singing Your praises. Amen.
ORDER OF SERVICE WE PREPARE TO MEET OUR LORD Hymn: 747 Earth and All Stars When the congregation is asked to stand, please do so only if you are able. You may remain seated if standing is difficult. WELCOME in the name of Jesus through whom alone we receive the blessings of salvation! Invocation: Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation (sings): Amen. Our Confession of Sins Pastor: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord. Congregation (sings): Who made heaven and earth. Pastor: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord. Congregation (sings): And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Pastor: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Therefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. Congregation: O most merciful God, who has given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. 2
Pastor: Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only Son to die for us, and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To all who believe on His name He gives the privilege of being children of God and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all. Congregation (sings): Amen. WE PRAISE OUR LORD Responsive Reading: Psalm 98:1-3 P: Oh, sing to the LORD a new song! For He has done marvelous things; C: His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory. P: The LORD has made known His salvation; C: His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the nations. P: He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness to the house of Israel; C: All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. P: Glory be to God! Congregation (sings): Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forevermore. Amen. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Rise, shine, you people! Christ the Lord has entered Our human story; God in Him is centered. He comes to us, by death and sin surrounded, With grace unbounded. 3
See how He sends the pow'rs of evil reeling; He brings us freedom, light and life and healing. All men and women, who by guilt are driven, Now are forgiven. Come, celebrate, your banners high unfurling, Your songs and prayers against the darkness hurling. To all the world go out and tell the story Of Jesus' glory. Tell how the Father sent His Son to save us. Tell of the Son, who life and freedom gave us. Tell how the Spirit calls from ev'ry nation His new creation. Pastor: The Lord be with you. Congregation (sings): And with your spirit. Pastor: Let us pray. Congregation (sings): Amen. WS 773. Text, Tune, & Setting: 1974 Augsburg Publishing House. All rights reserved. OneLicense.net License #A OUR LORD SPEAKS TO US 1st Scripture Reading: Isaiah 49:5-7 In this reading the LORD identifies Jesus as His Servant and chosen One who would without apology and in the face of opposition raise up the tribes of Jacob and serve as a light to the Gentiles. Grade School & High School Choirs: Above All Above all powers, above all kings, Above all nature and all created things, Above all wisdom and all the ways of man, You were here before the world began. Above all kingdoms, above all thrones, Above all wonders, the world has ever known; Above all wealth and treasures of the earth, There's no way to measure what You're worth. Crucified, laid behind a stone. You lived to die rejected and alone. Like a rose trampled on the ground, You took the fall, and thought of me Above all. 5 2nd Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 The message of the cross is foolishness to many, but it is the power of God for those being saved. We ought not be surprised, then, when the world opposes the preaching of the gospel, but we need not fear, for God is wiser and stronger than the world! Public Acceptance and Welcome of New Members to Immanuel Welcome: Chad Baldwin Sheila Burgess Shelly Cornish & sons: Jesse, Joseph, & Jacob Paul Hanel Tychicus Ty & Valerie Val Landon Wilton Wink Landon Samuel Riek and Martha Dak with children: Nyabigoa, Chlang, Nyamer, Nyadeng, Riek, Newland, and Kunan Ken Strand and son Paul Dale Thom New Members: if your address is incorrect or address is missing, please give the information to the church office. 5
Our Confession of Faith in the Apostolic Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Children's Sermon Children (pre-school-2nd grade) are invited to come forward and gather around the pastor in the front of the church. Hymn: 772 On Galilee s High Mountain The Sermon: Text Matthew 28:16-20 THE TRIUNE GOD, AND THE TASK AND MESSAGE OF HIS CHURCH I. We are called to be going WITHOUT APOLOGY (gospel propagation) II. 8 Offering of Thankful Hearts Our mission offerings are used to support the joint work we do with our sister congregations in the Church of the Lutheran Confession. These offerings are used to help support mission congregations within the United States, our foreign missions, and Immanuel Lutheran College in Eau Claire, WI. Prayers OUR LORD BLESSES US! Benediction Congregation (sings): Amen. Amen. Amen. Closing Hymn: Hark, the Voice of Jesus Calling 1. Hark! the voice of Jesus calling, "Who will go and work today? Fields are ripe and harvests waiting, Who will bear the sheaves away?" Loud and long the Master calls you, Rich reward He offers free; Who will answer, gladly saying, "Here am I, send me, send me"? 2. If you cannot speak like angels, If you cannot preach like Paul, You can tell the love of Jesus, You can say He died for all. If you cannot rouse the wicked With the Judgment's dread alarms, You can lead the little children To the Savior's waiting arms. 3. If you cannot be a watchman, Standing high on Zion's wall, Pointing out the path to heaven, Off ring life and peace to all, With your prayers and with your off rings You can do what God commands; You can be like faithful Aaron, Holding up the prophet's hands. 8
4. Let none hear you idly saying, There is nothing I can do," While the multitudes are dying, And the Master calls for you. Take the task He gives you gladly, Let His work your pleasure be. Answer quickly when He calls you, "Here am I, send me, send me!" Amen. (tune: TLH 496) Liturgy from The Lutheran Hymnal 1941 Concordia Publishing House. Used by permission. 15 Immanuel s 150th Anniversary Immanuel will celebrate its 150th Anniversary beginning in September, 2016 and then continuing throughout Immanuel s original Articles of Incorporation were drawn up and filed on September 15,1866. Its first pastor began work on September 1, Its Constitution was adopted on September 14, Its first church and parsonage were dedicated on October 27, Immanuel School was established the week after that initial dedication. Immanuel Sunday School and Ladies Aid Society were established on November 10, The theme chosen for our celebration is Immanuel 150 Years of God with Us! We have much for which to be thankful to God for 150 years of His blessings! A series of special services and events are being planned in and through which we can express our gratitude to God for those many blessings. In addition 2017 is the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, making 2017 a very special year not merely for Immanuel but for all of Lutheranism! An Anniversary Fund has been established by our voters, to which individuals can contribute and so support the various services, events, and projects undertaken during this upcoming anniversary year. Our initial goal is $3, which will help pay for special speakers, events, and a variety of projects. The current Anniversary Committee is made up of Dave Busse, Ben Busse, Grace Schreyer, Lane Fischer, and Pastor Nolting. More committee members would be welcomed and many volunteers will be needed to accomplish all that is being planned. We encourage everyone to get involved in some way, so that God s name might be exalted in our midst and His continued blessings experienced by our entire congregation! Among those things being proposed and planned are: 1) A series of five special services focusing on the various aspects 15
of Immanuel s ministry and a special observance of the Lutheran Reformation 2) The commissioning of hymns and special choral pieces 3) Post-service meals and congregational picnics 4) A read-through-the-bible program 5) An anniversary history 6) An anniversary play for the children 7) Church anniversary banners 8) Display boards pastors, teachers, buildings, societies 9) Commemorative clothing, cookbooks, plates, mugs 10) A photo directory 11) A float in the North Mankato Parade 12) A choral workshop 13) An organ/musical accompaniment workshop If anyone has a special interest in any of these proposed programs/ projects, please contact any of the Anniversary Committee members for more information. We anticipate a joyous and uplifting anniversary celebrated, which we hope and pray will enhance our spiritual lives as a congregation. The more people involved, the better everything will be! 40 Days for Life The 40 Days for Life campaign is intended to increase awareness of the issue of abortion. 58,000,000 babies have been aborted in the U.S. in the last 43 years. That is one out of every six Americans! Members of Immanuel are asked to participate in a prayer vigil outside Planned Parenthood here in Mankato this coming Saturday, March 19. The vigil will last from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. A sign-up sheet with hours of participation is in the narthex, together with more information. If further information is desired, please, contact Pastor Nolting ( or paul.nolting@immanuelmankato.org). Thank you! 16
