5 SECOND LESSON: Luke 12:13-21 (p.921, pew Bible) Jesus warns us about covetousness through His Parable of the Rich Fool. The man put his trust in his great wealth rather than in God. He died the very night that he assumed his life of luxury would begin. God calls such people fools! Pastor: Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it. Alleluia! APOSTOLIC CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. GROWING UP CLASSES: Students in grades 5-8 and their parents are invited to participate in the classes "Growing Up for Girls" and "Growing Up for Boys" the last class to be conducted today: Sunday, June 22, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Boys grades 7-8 These classes introduce changes (physical, emotional, and social) adolescents can expect to experience as they grow through this period of their lives. The classes are taught from a Biblical point of view, and at least one parent should attend with each student. Members of Immanuel and sister congregations are welcome to participate, whether or not the students attend Immanuel School. There is no cost. The second is to set a base price for the 218 Washington St. property; the Finance Board will have some suggestions. 10 House for Sale: As directed by the voters, the house at 218 Washington St. will be sold. We are giving members of Immanuel first option at purchasing this home. If you are interested contact Jim Buckley at Christian Women s Seminar - The Southeast congregations of the CLC are organizing the first ever Southeastern Women s Retreat for women of the CLC. It will be held on October 3-5, 2014 in Savannah, Georgia. While hosted by the congregations of Southeastern CLC, all are invited to join us! We hope to have at least 30 women attend the retreat this opening year. The estimated cost for the retreat is between $150 - $340 for the weekend (depending on how many you share your room with) and includes food and lodging. More details are available in the separate Registration Form (available through your pastor). VOLUNTEERS NEEDED at Immanuel Lutheran College Our volunteer work day at Immanuel Lutheran College will be held Saturday, July 19. We will leave from the church at 6:30 a.m. and car-pool to Eau Claire returning Saturday evening about 9:00 p.m. Please pack a noon lunch and bring money for supper. Bring any needed tools, gloves, sunscreen, change of clothes, etc. Come enjoy a day of work, fun, and fellowship! Please sign up on the sheet in the narthex. Write after your name the area in which you would like to work (for example, roofing, painting, cleaning, etc.). 11 CLC Coordinating Council Devotion Christian Witness in the Face of Persecution At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison. Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. Acts 8:1-4 With every passing year in these latter times, we find the unbelieving world s hostility to God, His Word, and His Church growing and intensifying. The Christian Church has been especially under attack in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Churches have been bombed or torched and Christians have been driven out of their country, beaten, imprisoned, or killed for their beliefs. Does this mean the Christian witness will be silenced and those who are without Christ will remain without God and without hope? Religious persecution is not a surprise to us. Jesus forewarned those who follow Him and bear witness of His saving grace that we will suffer persecution. He said to us, If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you (John 15:20). He tells of the degree of persecutions in the last days, saying, "Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name's sake. And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawless- 11

12 ness will abound, the love of many will grow cold (Matthew 24:9-12). When persecution broke out in Jerusalem in the early church, the rain clouds of the Gospel (Is. 55:9,10) did not dry up, but rather moved on to another area with Christians testifying of the gospel to new neighbors who were willing to hear the Word. While there were Christians who suffered martyrdom in those days, still the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church. (Tertullian - 2 nd century) In the face of dire opposition the Lord Jesus encourages us to follow His example of working while it is the day of opportunity, for the night of judgment will come when no one can work. Jesus adds to this, "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come (Matthew 24:14). May God grant us the grace to endure in the faith to the end and have the courage to continue to spread abroad the saving gospel of Christ so that others can share with us the eternal life of heaven through our Savior Jesus Christ.
