GRACE MERCY PEACE 14TH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY August 28 & 31, 2016 Volume 79, No. 46 Deacon: Charles Olmanson; Organist: Bonnie Cornish Sound: Brent Schreyer; Video: Mike Schweim; Screen: Russ Schmitt/Rachael Hanel Head Usher: Joseph Friedrichs; Asst. Usher: Kevin Moeri WELCOME to all! Visitors: please sign the guest register in the narthex. Visitors and members: feel free to speak with the Pastor after the service, or call Pastor Nolting or Pastor Naumann PRE-SERVICE DEVOTION: Psalm 30 (p.129, red hymnal) PRE-SERVICE PRAYER: Lord Jesus Christ, true God and true man, thank You for bringing me into Your house this day to worship You. As I consider my own unworthiness, I cannot help but stand in awe of Your awesome love that compelled You to come into the world to save a miserable sinner like me. Help me to share this gift of the knowledge of salvation with as many friends, neighbors, and family members as I can. In Your saving name I pray. Amen.
ORDER OF SERVICE [Worship Supplement 2000, pp. 12ff] PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP ENTRANCE HYMN: TLH 279 ~ Today Thy Mercy Calls Us When the congregation is asked to stand, please do so only if you are able. You may remain seated if standing is difficult. WELCOME to the house of the true, triune, saving God, who has offered up in richest measure the forgiving grace of His Son Jesus Christ. INVOCATION (Pastor): In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation: CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Text: from Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 1993 Northwestern Publishing House. All rights reserved. OneLicense.net License #A Pastor: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy. Congregation: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be called Your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. Pastor: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has removed your guilt forever. You are His own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to His will. Congregation: 2
THE SERVICE OF THE WORD Congregation (sings): Lord, have mercy on us, Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. GLORY TO GOD, WE GIVE YOU THANKS 1. Glory to God, we give You thanks and praise; Of heav'nly joy and peace on earth we sing. We worship You, to You our hearts we raise, Lord God, almighty Father, heav'nly King. 2. Lord Jesus Christ, the Father's only Son, You bore for us the load of this world's sin. O Lamb of God, Your glorious vict'ry won, Receive our prayer, grant us Your peace within. 3. Alone, O Christ, You only are the Lord, At God's right hand in majesty most high: Who, with the Spirit worshiped and adored, With all the heav'nly host we glorify. Text: Edwin LeGrice 1991 Kevin Mayhew Ltd. All rights reserved. OneLicense.net License #A PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Congregation: FIRST LESSON: Psalm 50:14-23 Our God here offers a strong warning to those who recite His statutes with their lips on Sunday, but cast His words aside the rest of the week. Let us be found as ones who offer thanksgiving to the Lord every day of the week and be shown the salvation of God. PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 51:1-3,7-9 (as printed on next bulletin page) (Congregation sings the whole psalm.) 3
4
SECOND LESSON: 1 Timothy 1:12-17 The apostle Paul is here using himself as the ultimate example of God s mercy. If even he, the pinnacle of opposition to Christianity, could receive mercy, surely the grace of God is sufficient enough to save anyone. Pastor: Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it. Congregation (sings): Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Tune: Kermit G. Moldenhauer 1993 Northwester Publishing House All rights reserved. OneLicense.net License #A APOSTOLIC CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. CHILDREN'S SERMON: (Sun. a.m.) Children (pre-school-2nd grade) are invited to come forward and gather around the pastor in the front of the church. 5
HYMN OF THE DAY: TLH 269 ~ O Lord, Our Father, Shall We Be Confounded SERMON: Text - John 5:1-15 (ESV) After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. 3 In these lay a multitude of invalids- blind, lame, and paralyzed. 5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?" 7 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me." 8 Jesus said to him, "Get up, take up your bed, and walk." 9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath. 10 So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed." 11 But he answered them, "The man who healed me, that man said to me, 'Take up your bed, and walk.'" 12 They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your bed and walk'?" 13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you." 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. JESUS CHRIST: HELPER OF THE HELPLESS I. He Gives More Than We Can Ask II. He Fulfilled the Law That We Cannot III. He Reveals Himself to Us Pastor Joe Naumann OFFERTORY Congregation (sings): Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence. Take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation. Uphold with Your Spirit free. 6
