Word of Truth Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? unless indeed you are disqualified. (2 Corinthians 13:5) Feb. 5 & 8, th Sunday after Volume 80, No. 6 Epiphany Serving Us Today: Deacon: ; Organist: Karla Olmanson Sound: Nathan Clobes; Video: Tony Harris; Screen: Russell Schmitt Head Usher: Karl Friedrichs; Asst. Usher: Kyle Hulke WELCOME to all! Visitors: please sign the guest register in the narthex. Visitors and members: feel free to speak with the Pastor after the service, or call Pastor Nolting or Pastor Naumann Pre-Service Devotion: Psalm 32 (p. 130, red hymnal) [Communion Preparation: The Christian Questions, inside the back cover of the red hymnals.] Pre-Service Prayer: O LORD God, as I enter Your presence for worship this day, open my ears so that I might hear the truths presented in Your holy Word. Implant those truths within my heart and mind, and move me to put those truths into practice in my life. Strengthen me with Your power, O God, and send Your Spirit to work within me, so that I might ever prove faithful to You, my Lord and Savior. Amen.
COMMUNION ORDER OF SERVICE We Prepare to Meet Our LORD Hymn: 127,v.1,4,5 As with Gladness Men of Old When the congregation is asked to stand, please do so only if you are able. You may remain seated if standing is difficult. WELCOME in the name of Jesus who still speaks to us with authority through His Word! Invocation: Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation (sings): Amen. Our Confession of Sins: Pastor: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord. Congregation (sings): Who made heaven and earth. Pastor: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord. Congregation (sings): And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. All: O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have offended You. I justly deserve Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for my sins and sincerely repent of them. I pray that You would of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. Pastor: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation (sings): Amen. 2
We Praise Our LORD Responsive Reading: Psalm 119:89-94 P: Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven. C: Your faithfulness endures to all generations; P: You established the earth, and it abides. C: They continue this day according to Your ordinances, for all are Your servants. P: Unless Your law had been my delight, C: I would then have perished in my affliction. P: I will never forget Your precepts, C: For by them You have given me life. P: I am Yours, save me; C: For I have sought Your precepts. P: Glory be to God! Congregation (sings): Hymn of Praise Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forevermore. Amen. O God of God, O Light of Light (tune: LSB 810,v.4) Then raise to Christ a mighty song, And shout His name, His mercies tell! Sing, heav nly host, your praise prolong, And all on earth, your anthem swell! All hail, O Lamb for sinners slain! Forever let the song ascend! Worthy the Lamb, enthroned to reign, All glory, pow r! Amen, amen. Pastor: Let us pray. Congregation (sings): Amen. 3
Our LORD Speaks to Us Old Testament Reading: Ezekiel 33:10-16 God has no pleasure in the death of the wicked. Rather, God wants all people to repent of their sins and live righteous lives under His guidance and with His blessing. Ensemble: Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing Pastor Joe Naumann; Nyibol Kuan Come, Thou Fount of ev'ry blessing, Tune my heart to sing Thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. While the hope of endless glory Fills my heart with joy and love, Teach me ever to adore Thee; May I still Thy goodness prove. Oh, to grace how great a debtor Daily I m constrained to be; Let that grace now like a fetter Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee: Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it; Prone to leave the God I love. Here s my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for Thy courts above. Oh, that day when freed from sinning, I shall see Thy lovely face; Clothed then in the blood-washed linen, How I ll sing Thy wondrous grace! Come, my Lord, no longer tarry; Take my ransom'd soul away; Send Thine angels soon to carry Me to realms of endless day. LSB 686 New Testament Reading: Romans 8:1-9 God s law does not condemn those who believe in Christ and live their lives under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Our sinful flesh, however, will attempt to mislead us. Therefore, let us pray for the Spirit s continual presence in our hearts and lives! 4
Our Confession of Faith in the Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, Whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, And I look for the resurrection of the dead And the life of the world to come. Amen. Hymn: My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness; No merit of my own I claim But wholly lean on Jesus' name. Refrain: On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand. 5
When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In ev ry high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil. Refrain His oath, His covenant, and blood Support me in the raging flood; When ev ry earthly prop gives way, He then is all my Hope and Stay. Refrain When He shall come with trumpet sound, Oh, may I then in Him be found, Clothed in His righteousness alone, Redeemed to stand before the throne! Refrain LSB 575 (alt. TLH 370) Sermon: Text - Matthew 7:24-29 JESUS STILL SPEAKS WITH AUTHORITY! I. Any fool can listen to what He says! II. Only the wise actually do what He says! Pastor Paul D. Nolting Sermon Notes: 6
We Offer Ourselves to Our LORD Offertory Congregation (sings): Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Your salvation; and uphold me with Your free Spirit. Amen. Offering of Thankful Hearts [Wed. service offering may be left in narthex basket.] Prayers Our LORD Gives Himself to Us Communion Liturgy Pastor: The Lord be with you. Congregation (sings): And with your spirit. Pastor: Lift up your hearts. Congregation (sings): We lift them up unto the Lord. Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. Congregation (sings): It is meet and right so to do. Pastor: It is truly fitting, right, and beneficial that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God:... Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Congregation (sings): Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth; heav'n and earth are full of Your glory; hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He, blessed is He, blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest! Pastor: The Lord's Prayer Congregation (sings): For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Words of Institution Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you alway! Congregation (sings): Amen. O Christ, the Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Christ, the Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Christ, the Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world, grant us Your peace. Amen. 7
Distribution Our Practice of Close Communion We believe that God desires unity of faith and confession among all who commune together. All communicant members of Immanuel and of our sister congregations in the CLC (Church of the Lutheran Confession) are welcome at the Lord's Table. If there are visitors present who wish to commune with us in the future, you are invited to speak with the Pastor about this at your convenience. For more information pick up the tract from the narthex titled Why Close Communion. Communing Members who have difficulty at the kneeling rail may sit in the front pew on either side. The pastors will bring communion to you there. Any communicants sitting in the balcony should please come down to the narthex for direction to the table. Communicants are ushered to the communion table. If you desire the bread in your hand, simply extend your hand to the Pastor as he approaches you with the bread. Those desiring an individual cup, please take a cup when the tray is offered. The common cup will immediately follow. Please dispose of your individual cup in the baskets located behind each pillar or in the center aisle. Communion Hymns: 718 (tan Supplement) O Jesus, King of Glory Jesus Christ, Our Blessed Savior 1. Jesus Christ, our blessed Savior, Turned away God's wrath forever; By His bitter grief and woe He saved us from the evil Foe. 2. As His pledge of love undying He, this precious food supplying, Gives His body with the bread And with the wine the blood He shed. 3. Jesus here Himself is sharing; Heed then how you are preparing, For if you do not believe, His judgment then you shall receive. 4. Praise the Father, who from heaven To His own this food has given, Who, to mend what we have done, Gave into death His only Son. 8
5. Firmly hold with faith unshaken That this food is to be taken By the sick who are distressed, By hearts that long for peace and rest. 6. Agony and bitter labor Were the cost of God s high favor; Do not come if you suppose You need not Him who died and rose. 7. Christ says: "Come, all you that labor, And receive My grace and favor; Those who feel no pain or ill Need no physician's help or skill. 8. For what purpose was My dying If not for your justifying? And what use this precious food If you yourself were pure and good? 9. If your heart this truth professes And your mouth your sin confesses, You will be your Savior s guest Be at His banquet truly blest. 10. Let this food your faith so nourish That its fruit of love may flourish And your neighbor learn from you How much God s wondrous love can do. LSB 627 (alt. OneLicense.net License #A Lord, Now Let Us Depart Congregation (sings): Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace according to Your word. For my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all people. A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel. Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forevermore. Amen. 9
Our LORD Blesses Us Benediction Congregation (sings): Amen. Amen. Amen. Closing Hymn: "Lord Jesus Christ, the Church's Head" 1. Lord Jesus Christ, the Church's Head, You are her one Foundation; In You she trusts, before You bows, And waits for Your salvation. Built on this Rock secure, Your Church shall endure Though all the world decay And all things pass away. O hear, O hear us, Jesus! 2. O Lord, let this Your little flock, Your name alone confessing, Continue in Your loving care, True unity possessing. Your Sacraments, O Lord, And Your saving Word To us, Lord, pure retain. Grant that they may remain Our only strength and comfort. 3. Help us to serve You evermore With hearts both pure and lowly; And may Your Word, that light divine, Shine on in splendor holy That we repentance show, In faith ever grow. The pow'r of sin destroy And evils that annoy. O make us faithful Christians! 10
4. And for Your Gospel let us dare To sacrifice all treasure; Teach us to bear Your blessed cross, To find in You all pleasure. O grant us steadfastness In joy and distress, Lest we, Lord, You forsake. Let us by grace partake Of endless joy and gladness. Amen. Following the service: Mon. Feb. 6 LSB #647 (alt.
