It was Your love for us fallen sinners that sent Your Son to us with the message of forgiveness, and even sacrificed Him on the cross for our sins. Oh, how quickly and surely the problem of man s salvation was solved when You applied Your love to it! Amen! Welcome to everyone who has come to share the Good News of the Gospel with us today! Congregation: Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy. C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be called Your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. P: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. So he said, Teacher, say it. 41 There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more? 43 Simon answered and said, I suppose the one whom he forgave more. And He said to him, You have rightly judged. 44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has 3

5 washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. 45 You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46 You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47 Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. 7 CLC News The Rev. John Schierenbeck (em.) has returned the call from Immanuel Lutheran, Mankato MN, to serve as part-time interim pastor. Messiah Lutheran, Eau Claire WI, has issued a 1-year interim call to several local, part-time teachers in order to staff its classroom for grades 3-4. The ladies who have accepted this call are Barbara Gurgel, Lynette Roehl, Kelly Beekman, and Valerie Hammett, who had returned the full-time call. Eric Libby has returned the call to teach 11/12 Religion at Immanuel Lutheran High School, Mankato, MN for the fall semester of 2017; the congregation has now called the Rev. Douglas Libby to the same position, and he has accepted. ILS Parent Teacher Organization The purposes of the ILS Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) are 1) to promote our children s welfare in the home, school, church, and community and 2) to enhance the relationship among home, school, and church. The PTO guidelines define membership as all parents/guardians with children attending Immanuel Lutheran School, teachers, and adult members of Immanuel Lutheran Church who would like to participate. Four business meetings will be held this school year. In addition, two dates have been reserved as special meetings for educational or discussion topics. Please mark your calendars with the dates listed below. Refreshments will be served prior to the meeting at 5:45 p.m. to allow time to visit with other families from school. Business meetings will run from 6:30 7:30 p.m PTO Schedule Sept 20 Business Meeting (Refreshments: Potluck) October 4 Educational/Discussion Meeting (Topic: Curriculum) November 15 Business Meeting January 24 Business Meeting March 28 Educational/Discussion (Topic: To be determined) April 4 Business Meeting and election of officers Dear Members of Immanuel, As most all of you know, I was blessed with the opportunity to serve as one of the mission helpers to Nepal in July. While we were there, between all the mission helpers, we taught our lessons in 21 churches and schools across the country and reached approximately 2,439 children with the Word. This experience has been unlike any other in my life and I am so thankful for the opportunity. I would really like to thank anyone who has made a donation to make these trips possible for not only me, but other mission helpers as well. We all really appreciate the overwhelming support we receive from our home church members, so thank you. 8 Sign Making Event Join us for fellowship and crafting at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 16 from 1-4 pm in the church basement! This is a sign-making event hosted by Jessi Scheberl, a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Eau Claire, WI (and the artist who completed the upstairs hallway murals). She will provide all materials, and the cost is $15-$20 per sign. Sign up sheet for this event is in the church narthex. If you have any questions, please contact Kim Ochsner, or Kacie Carstensen, We hope to see you there! Photo Directory Immanuel will be putting together a photo directory for all of our members. Photo sessions will be held Thursday, October 5 th through Thursday, October 12 th. Families may sign up for preferred appointment times by visiting appt.lifetouch.com. We would like to get 100% member/family participation. All families who participate will receive a free 8x10 portrait, as well as a copy of the directory, which will be filled with historical content for our congregation s 150 year history. There will be an opportunity to buy additional items (Christmas cards, canvas prints, etc.) but there is no obligation to purchase anything. If you are not able to make appointments online, there will be several opportunities to sign up after church on Sundays. In addition, volunteers will be needed to serve as hosts on appointment days. Christian Women s Retreat - The Southeast congregations of the CLC are organizing the Fourth Annual Southeastern Women s Retreat for women of the CLC. It will be held November 10-12, 2017 in Savannah, Georgia. While hosted by the congregations of Southeastern CLC, all are invited to join us! Last year a strong number of women from across the CLC attended, ranging from South Carolina, to Georgia, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Texas and Washington. The estimated cost for the retreat is between $158 - $371 for the weekend (depending on how many you share your room with) and includes food and lodging. More details are available in the separate Registration Form (will be soon available through your pastor). 9 These are a few of my memories of Immanuel Church and School, in no particular order. There were 12 or 13 beautiful stained glass windows in the old church. They were huge (as big as our present ones are), and each one depicted a Bible story. A couple favorites were Jesus with Mary and Martha, Jesus in Gethsemane, and Jesus on the water, stretching out his hand to help Peter from drowning. Gracing the front wall by the altar were soft pastel paintings. One was Jesus holding a lamb, and another was Jesus with the little children. The very first funeral that I ever remember attending was that of our beloved Pastor G.W. Fischer. I was 5 years old, and it was an evening service in a very packed church. It was hard to find a place to sit. One of the hymns that we sang was #371, Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness. There were no flowers per Pastor Fischer s request. Pastor Fischer was age 63 when he died, and in my child s mind, I thought that was pretty old... but I don t think that anymore! In the pre-fire church, there were 2 Bible passages painted high up on the front wall. They spoke of the Law and thegospel. On the left side was painted By the law is the knowledge of sin (Rom. 3:20). On the right side was painted For by grace are ye saved, through faith (Eph. 2:8). After the church burned on July 4, 1971, we had Sunday services at Mankato West High School. I was a beginner organist, and remember playing on an old organ that a local music store let us use. It was placed on stage in the West auditorium near a heavy red velvet curtain. There was no air movement there, and it was so hot in the summertime! One Sunday, the organ started smoking, and on another Sunday before services, the back and other areas of it fell apart! Pastor Reim hurried across the street to Madsen s Value Center and bought some duct tape. He fixed it! We used that little organ for almost a year and a half, and were very grateful for it. A memory from grade school was of the 8th-grade girls taking turns at lunch time to help our cook, Shirley Peterson. We were excused from class for about an hour or so, to dish up food and clean up. We got out of some studying, at least for a little while! There was no school secretary, so we also took turns answering the phone, and working in the bookstore which was located outside of the upper floor classrooms. Here is where we sold pencils, paper, and other school supplies to our fellow classmates. The LORD has preserved Immanuel congregation in His precious truth for 150 years, and may He continue to keep us steadfast in His Word! from Vivian Born Han 8
