Christ Church Christiana Hundred WELCOME! Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we are glad you are with us today to join in the worship of God. This service comes to us from the traditional liturgies of prayer, where we listen for God s wisdom in the holy Word and pray for the world and its needs. You are welcome here. THE EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST SEPTEMBER 23, :00 AM SUNG MORNING PRAYER, RITE I Voluntary Andante from Trio Sonata No. 4 J. S. Bach ( ) Welcome and Announcements Stephen Setzer The Introit Sir David Willcocks ( ) Lord, we pray thee that thy grace may ever precede and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please stand, as able, and sing The Entrance Hymn 401 The God of Abraham Praise (blue) Hymnal 1982 Opening Sentences I was glad when they said unto me, We will go into the house of the Lord. Psalm 122:1 O send out thy light and thy truth, that they may lead me, and bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy dwelling. Psalm 43:3 Confession of Sin Officiant Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. Please kneel, as able. Officiant Almighty and most merciful Father, People we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us,

spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. The Officiant announces God s forgiveness to give us new life and the blessing of peace. People Amen. Please stand and join in singing The Invitatory The Venite The antiphon is first sung by the Cantor, then repeated by all before and after the Venite, sung by all. Chant: E. Rimbault Antiphon Worship the Lord in the / beauty. of / holiness: // O / come, let / us a / dore him. O come, let us / sing unto the / Lord; // let us heartily rejoice in the / strength of / our sal- / vation. Let us come before his / presence with / thanksgiving; // and show ourselves / glad in / him with / psalms. For the Lord is a / great / God; // and a great / King a bove / all / gods. In his hand are all the / corners of the / earth; // and the strength of the / hills is / his / also. The sea is / his and he / made it; // and his / hands pre- / pared the / dry land. O come, let us / worship and fall / down, // and kneel be- / fore the / Lord our / Maker. For he is the / Lord our / God; // and we are the people of his pasture, and the / sheep / of his / hand. Glory be to the Father and / to the / Son, // and / to the / Holy / Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and / ever / shall be; // world without / end. / A- / men.

Please be seated as the Choir sings Psalm 54 Deus, in Nomine Chant: E. Taylor ( ) Save me, O God, for thy Name s sake, and avenge me in thy strength. Hear my prayer, O God, and hearken unto the words of my mouth. For strangers are risen up against me; and tyrants, which have not God before their eyes, seek after my soul. Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is with them that uphold my soul. He shall reward evil unto mine enemies; destroy thou them in thy truth. An offering of a free heart will I give thee, and praise thy Name, O Lord; because it is so comfortable. For he hath delivered me out of all my trouble; and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies. Please stand. Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end. Amen. Please be seated for Reading The Story Genesis 12:1-7 (NIV) The Lord had said to Abram, Go from your country, your people and your father s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you. So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there. Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. The Lord appeared to Abram and said, To your offspring I will give this land. So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him. At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God. The Choir sings The Canticle Jubilate Deo Charles Villiers Stanford ( ) O be joyful in the Lord all ye lands; serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth from generation to generation. Please stand. Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end. Amen.

Please be seated for The Second Reading Mark 9:30-37 Jesus and his disciples passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again. But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, What were you arguing about on the way? But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all. Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me. At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God. Please stand and sing Hymn 655 O Jesus, I Have Promised Hymnal 1982 Please be seated for The Sermon A New Hope: God Builds a Nation Stephen Setzer Please stand for The Apostles Creed Officiant I believe in God, People the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Please kneel and sing The Prayers All sing in unison The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Officiant and People then sing The Suffrages The Officiant then sings the collects, to which all respond, Amen. Grant us, O Lord, not to mind earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to cleave to those that shall abide; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

O God, who makest us glad with the weekly remembrance of the glorious resurrection of thy Son our Lord: Grant us this day such blessing through our worship of thee, that the days to come may be spent in thy favor; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of thy faithful people is governed and sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before thee for all members of thy holy Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and godly serve thee; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. The Officiant adds intercessions for the church and for the world, concluding with the bidding of the General Thanksgiving. The General Thanksgiving Officiant Almighty God, Father of all mercies, People we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. A Prayer of St. Chrysostom Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee, and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. Officiant People Officiant Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen. II Corinthians 13:14 Being seated, we begin with a time of offering, giving money as a sign that our life serves God s purposes and showing our gratitude for God s many blessings. For those who give online or will text a contribution to (302) , a card is available in the narthex to participate in the act of offering. Newcomers and guests may place the welcome card in the offering plate.

Anthem at the Offering Philip Moore (b. 1943) My spirit longs for Thee within my troubled breast, though I unworthy be of so divine a Guest. Of so divine a Guest unworthy though I be, yet has my heart no rest unless it come from Thee. Unless it come from Thee, in vain I look around; in all that I can see no rest is to be found. No rest is to be found but in Thy blessed love; O let my wish be crowned, and send it from above. Poem by John Byrom ( ) Please stand and sing The Presentation Hymn 373 Praise the Lord! Ye Heavens Adore Him Hymnal 1982 The Blessing The Officiant blesses the People. People Amen. Hymn in Procession 636 How Firm a Foundation Hymnal 1982 Voluntary Lead Us, O Father, in the Paths of Peace Charles Villiers Stanford We are sent forth to be Christ s blessing in the world. Our prayer is that today s worship has encouraged you in love, strengthened you for service, and filled you with joy. We look forward to your presence again in worship, in service to others, in learning and fellowship. Please take our community announcements with you to learn of upcoming opportunities.
