Almighty and everlasting God, you have given to us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of your divine Majesty to worship the Unity: Keep us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to see you in your one and eternal glory, O Father; who with the Son and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Please be seated for The First Reading Isaiah 6:1-8 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory. The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts! The Gospel Reading John 3:1-17 Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God. Jesus answered him, Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above. Nicodemus said to him, How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother s womb and be born? Jesus answered, Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, You must be born from above. The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus said to him, How can these things be? Jesus answered him, Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Priest The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Homily Ruth Beresford Presentation and Examination of the Candidate (red) Book of Common Prayer 301 The candidate is presented by parents and godparents, who make promises in their own names and also take vows on behalf of the candidate. The then addresses the congregation, saying Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support this person in her life in Christ? We will. Let us join with N. who is committing herself to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant.

3 Please stand for The Baptismal Covenant Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of the bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God s help. The then says to the congregation Let us now pray for this person who is to receive the Sacrament of new birth. Prayers for the Candidate Deliver N., O Lord, from the way of sin and death. Open her heart to your grace and truth. Fill her with your holy and life-giving Spirit. Keep her in the faith and communion of your holy Church. Teach her to love others in the power of the Spirit. Send her into the world in witness to your love. Bring her to the fullness of your peace and glory.

4 The then says to the congregation Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen. As the candidate is brought to the font by her sponsors, the young children of the congregation gather nearby. Thanksgiving Over the Water BCP 306 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. The continues the prayer, concluding Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. The Baptism and Anointing The Priest pours water upon the head of the candidate, symbolizing the inward cleansing from sin in the name of the Trinity. Then the oil of Chrism is marked upon the head, symbolizing the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. These outward actions make the candidate a new Christian, inwardly and spiritually. A candle is given, symbolizing Christ s light now shining in this new life. At the conclusion of these actions, the invites the congregation to pray. Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised her to the new life of grace. Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give her an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. The Welcoming and The Peace Let us welcome the newly baptized. We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. THE HOLY COMMUNION Being seated, we begin with a time of offering, giving money as a sign that our life serves God s purposes and showing our gratitude for God s many blessings.
