THE LAST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY MARCH 3, :30 PM ORGAN PRELUDE 5:00 PM CHORAL EVENSONG Organ Prelude Jack Burnam, organist Versets from Messe pour les Convents François Couperin ( ) Plein jeu: Et in terra pax Dialogue sur la voix humaine Basse de Trompette Elevation: Tierce en taille Dialogue sur les les grands jeux Allein Gott in der Hoh sei Ehr, BWV 662 Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Thème et Variations (from Hommage à Frescobaldi) Jean Langlais ( ) Evening Song David Hurd (b. 1950) Please stand, as able, for The Procession Christ Church Christiana Hundred WELCOME! Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we are glad you are with us today to join in the worship of God. This service comes to us from the traditional liturgies of prayer, where we listen for God s wisdom in the holy Word and pray for the world and its needs. You are welcome here. Opening Sentences Thine is the day, O God, thine also the night; thou hast established the moon and the sun. Thou hast fixed all the boundaries of the earth; thou hast made summer and winter. Psalm 74:15, 16 I will bless the Lord who giveth me counsel; my heart teacheth me, night after night. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not fall. Psalm 16:7, 8 Confession of Sin Officiant Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, so that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. Please kneel. Officiant Almighty and most merciful Father, People we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults,
restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. The Officiant announces God s forgiveness to give us new life and the blessing of peace. People Amen. Please stand as the Officiant and Choir sing The Invitatory O Lord, open thou our lips. O God, make speed to save us. Praise ye the Lord. Maxine Thevenot And our mouth shall proclaim thy praise. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Lord s name be praised. As the candles are lighted, the Choir sings The Phos hilaron Robert W. Lehman (b. 1960) Please be seated as the Choir sings Psalm 114 In exitu Israel Chant: Tonus Peregrinus When Israel came out of Egypt, and the house of Jacob from among the strange people, Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion. The sea saw that and fled; Jordan was driven back. The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like young sheep. What aileth thee, O thou sea that thou fleddest? and thou Jordan that thou wast driven back? Ye mountains that ye skipped like rams? and ye little hills like young sheep? Tremble thou earth at the presence of the Lord; at the presence of the God of Jacob; Who turned the hard rock into a standing water, and the flint-stone into a springing well. Psalm 115 Non nobis, Domine Chant: E. Higgins (19th Century English) Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy Name give the praise; for thy loving mercy and for thy truth s sake. Wherefore shall the heathen say, where is now their God? As for our God he is in heaven: he hath done whatsoever pleased him. Their idols are silver and gold, even the work of men s hands. They have mouths and speak not; eyes have they and see not. They have ears and hear not; noses have they and smell not. They have hands and handle not; feet have they and walk not; neither speak they through their throat. They that make them are like unto them; and so are all such as put their trust in them. But thou house of Israel trust thou in the Lord; he is their helper and defender. Ye house of Aaron put your trust in the Lord; he is their helper and defender. Ye that fear the Lord put your trust in the Lord; he is their helper and defender. The Lord hath been mindful of us and he shall bless us; even he shall bless the house of Israel, he shall bless the house of Aaron. He shall bless them that fear the Lord, both small and great. The Lord shall increase you more and more, you and your children.
Ye are the blessed of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. All the whole heavens are the Lord s; the earth hath he given to the children of men. The dead praise not thee, O Lord, neither all they that go down into silence. But we will praise the Lord, from this time forth for evermore. Praise the Lord. Please stand. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Please be seated for The First Lesson Deuteronomy 6:1-9 Now this is the commandment the statutes and the ordinances that the Lord your God charged me to teach you to observe in the land that you are about to cross into and occupy, so that you and your children and your children s children may fear the Lord your God all the days of your life, and keep all his decrees and his commandments that I am commanding you, so that your days may be long. Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe them diligently, so that it may go well with you, and so that you may multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God. Please stand for The Magnificat from The Latin American Service Bryan Kelly (b. 1934) My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Please be seated for The Second Lesson John 12:24-32 Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say Father, save me from this hour? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name. Then a voice came from heaven, I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again. The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, An angel has spoken to him. Jesus answered, This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself. At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God.
Please stand for The Nunc dimittis from The Latin American Service Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, to be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. We profess the faith of the Church, singing The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Bryan Kelly Please kneel as the Officiant and Choir sing The Prayers The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Maxine Thevenot All sing the Lord s Prayer in monotone. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. The Officiant and Choir sing O Lord, show thy mercy upon us; O Lord, save the state. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. O Lord, save thy people. Give peace in our time, O Lord. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And grant us thy salvation. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. And make thy chosen people joyful. And bless thy inheritance. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God, And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.
Collect for The Last Sunday after the Epiphany O God, who before the passion of thy only-begotten Son didst reveal his glory upon the holy mount: Grant unto us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Evening Collects O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of all enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Please stand and sing Hymn 129 Christ Upon the Mountain Peak Hymnal 1982 Please be seated for The Welcome Ruth Beresford Anthem Benjamin Britten ( ) We praise thee, O God; we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting. To thee all Angels cry aloud, the Heavens and all the Powers therein. To thee Cherubim and Seraphim continually do cry: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth; heaven and earth are full of the majesty of thy glory. The glorious company of the apostles praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the prophets praise thee. The noble army of martyrs praise thee. The holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge thee, the Father, of an infinite majesty, thine adorable, true, and only Son, also the Holy Ghost the Comforter. Thou art the King of glory, O Christ, Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, thou didst humble thyself to be born of a Virgin. When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come to be our judge. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy saints, in glory everlasting. O Lord, save thy people, and bless thine heritage. Govern them, and lift them up for ever. Day by day we magnify thee; and we worship thy Name: ever world without end. Vouchsafe, O Lord; to keep us this day without sin. O Lord, have mercy upon us. O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us: as our trust is in thee. O Lord, in thee have I trusted: let me never be confounded. Please kneel for The General Thanksgiving Officiant Almighty God, People Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. The Officiant prays A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee, and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. The Blessing Officiant The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen. II Corinthians 13:14 Please stand.
