Christ Church Christiana Hundred WELCOME! Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we are glad you are with us today to join in the worship of God and to share in Christ s presence given to us in the sacrament of bread and wine. You are welcome here. THE SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 10, :00 AM HOLY EUCHARIST, RITE II Service Music from Missa de Sancta Maria Magdalena, Healey Willan ( ) Voluntary Prepare the Way, O Zion Dale Wood ( ) Welcome and Announcements Stephen Setzer Introit Malcolm Archer (b. 1952) Blessed are you, Sovereign Lord, just and true: to you be praise and glory for ever! Of old you spoke by the mouth of your prophets but in our days you speak through your Son whom you have appointed the heir of all things. Grant us, your people, to walk in his light that we may be found ready and watching when he comes again in glory and judgment; for you are our light and our salvation. Blessed be God for ever. THE WORD OF GOD Please stand, as able, and sing The Entrance Hymn 59 Hark! A Thrilling Voice is Sounding (blue) Hymnal 1982 Celebrant People Celebrant Blessed are you, holy and living God. You come to your people and set them free. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. All sing Kyrie eleison

Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please be seated for The First Reading Isaiah 40:1-11 Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord s hand double for all her sins. A voice cries out: In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. A voice says, Cry out! And I said, What shall I cry? All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, Here is your God! See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God. The Choir sings Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13 Benedixisti, Domine Chant: Alan Stephen Hemmings (b. 1934) Lord, thou art become gracious unto thy land; thou hast turned away the captivity of Jacob. Thou hast forgiven the offence of thy people, and covered all their sins. I will hearken what the Lord God will say; for he shall speak peace unto his people and to his saints, that they turn not again unto foolishness. For his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land. Mercy and truth are met together: righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall flourish out of the earth, and righteousness hath looked down from heaven. Yea, the Lord shall show loving-kindness; and our land shall give her increase. Righteousness shall go before him, and he shall direct his going in the way. Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end. Amen. The Second Reading II Peter 3:8-15a Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements

will melt with fire? But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God. Please stand and sing The Gradual Hymn 65 Prepare the Way, O Zion Hymnal 1982 The Gospel is carried into the congregation so that we remember it is our Good News to hear and to share. The Gospel Reading Mark 1:1-8 Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Priest People The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight, John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Once the Book of Gospels has returned to its place of honor, the People may be seated at the invitation of the preacher. The Sermon Is This the End? Strive Stephen Setzer Please stand for The Nicene Creed Celebrant Let us declare our faith in God: People We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

A member of the parish leads the prayers. The Prayers of the People Watchful at all times, let us pray for strength to stand with confidence before our Maker and Redeemer. [silence] That God may bring in his kingdom with justice and mercy, let us pray to the Lord: That God may establish among the nations righteousness and peace, let us pray to the Lord: That we may seek Christ in the Scriptures and recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread, let us pray to the Lord: That God may bind up the brokenhearted, restore the sick, and raise up all who have fallen, let us pray to the Lord: That the light of God s coming may dawn on all who live in darkness and the shadow of death, let us pray to the Lord: That, with all the saints in light, we may shine forth as lights for the world, let us pray to the Lord: We commend ourselves and all for whom we pray to the mercy and protection of our heavenly Father. [silence] The Celebrant offers a concluding prayer. The Confession of Sin Celebrant A voice cries out in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord. So let us listen, and turn to the Lord in penitence and faith. Please kneel, as able. Celebrant Let us pray. People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Celebrant offers the absolution. The Peace Priest People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. THE HOLY COMMUNION Being seated, we begin with a time of offering, giving money as a sign that our life serves God s purposes and showing our gratitude for God s many blessings. For those who give online, a card is available in the narthex to participate in the act of offering. Newcomers and guests may place the welcome card in the offering plate.

Anthem Richard Proulx ( ) Rorate caeli desuper, et nubes pluant justum. Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain the Just One. O Lord, your anger keep from us and remember no longer our sins and transgressions. Lo, the city of the Lord has become a desert; Zion is now a forsaken land, Jerusalem now is desolate; and the holy place of your sanctification, the place of your glory, where our ancestors sang your praise in their own day. Rorate caeli desuper, et nubes pluant justum. Now be comforted, now be comforted my people; for most quickly comes your salvation. Why then are you all consumed with grief, so that your sorrowing has transformed you? I come to you, do not be afraid. Do you not know that I am your Lord and God, the most Holy One, Redeemer of Israel? Rorate caeli desuper, et nubes pluant justum. Please stand and sing The Presentation Hymn 304, vs. 1, 3 I Come With Joy to Meet My Lord Hymnal 1982 The Great Thanksgiving (red) Book of Common Prayer 367 God The Celebrant continues the prayer, inviting our praise in the ancient song of the Sanctus. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: The Celebrant continues the prayer, inviting our acclamation of Christ s sacrificial death and triumphant resurrection, saying Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Celebrant and People We remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory;

The Celebrant continues the prayer, concluding By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. The Celebrant invites the People to say the prayer Jesus taught his first disciples. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread We sing the anthem at the breaking of the bread, which is Christ s Body, broken for us. Please be seated after the sacrament is presented. All are welcome to receive the sacrament of Christ, kneeling or standing, either consuming the bread and drinking from the cup or dipping (intincting) the bread carefully into the cup. Gluten-free host are available; let the clergy know your need when they approach you at the rail. If you are unable to come forward, ask an usher to let the clergy know.

Communion Anthem Anonymous, 16th Century Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say rejoice. Let your softness be known unto all men: the Lord is e en at hand. Be careful for nothing: but in all prayer and supplication, let your petitions be manifest unto God with giving of thanks. And the peace of God which passeth all understanding keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesu. Amen. Please stand for The Post-Communion Prayer Celebrant Let us pray. People Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. The Blessing The Celebrant blesses the People. People Amen. Hymn in Procession 53 Once He Came in Blessing Hymnal 1982 Dismissal Priest People Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God! Voluntary Vox clamantis in deserto Gerald Near (b. 1942) We are sent forth to be Christ s blessing in the world. Our prayer is that today s worship has encouraged you in love, strengthened you for service, and filled you with peace. We look forward to your presence again in worship, in service to others, in learning and fellowship. Please take our community announcements with you to learn of upcoming opportunities.
