Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Please be seated for The First Reading II Corinthians 8:7-15 Now as you excel in everything in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking. I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others. For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. And in this matter I am giving my advice: it is appropriate for you who began last year not only to do something but even to desire to do something now finish doing it, so that your eagerness may be matched by completing it according to your means. For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has not according to what one does not have. I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written, The one who had much did not have too much, and the one who had little did not have too little. At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God. The Gospel Reading Mark 5:21-43 Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him; and he was by the sea. Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and begged him repeatedly, My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live. So he went with him. And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years. She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, for she said, If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well. Immediately her hemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, Who touched my clothes? And his disciples said to him, You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, Who touched me? He looked all around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. He said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease. While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader s house to say, Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further? But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, Do not fear, only believe. He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. When he had entered, he said to them, Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping. And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, Talitha cum, which means, Little girl, get up! And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. Priest The Gospel of the Lord. 3 The Homily DR Trip Youth Missioners Please stand for The Apostles Creed Celebrant Let us declare our faith in God: People I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. A member of the parish leads the prayers from our midst. The Prayers of the People Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. [silence] For the Church we pray for our diocese and for our bishop, Kevin. We pray for our companions in the Dominican Republic. We lift up our ministry of N. and pray for our outreach partners as we love and serve our neighbors together. We pray for our president, Donald, and for our Congress, that they may lead us to a stronger union. We pray for refugees and all who are without a home or family. We pray for our military on active duty and for their families. Remembering all who need God s comfort and healing, we pray for N., and those we name now. [pause] We remember all who have died, especially N., and those we remember now. [pause] We offer the intentions and petitions held close to our hearts, as we ask for guidance, mercy, and blessing. The Celebrant adds a concluding prayer. The Confession Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Youth Leaders Ruth, we present to you N.N. Today we mark the end of their childhood among us and pray for them as they journey to adulthood. Celebrant Dear People of God: The transformation from childhood to adulthood marks one of God s great gifts the creative power we have in our bodies, our minds, and our hearts. Because we are made in God s image, human beings are free to choose how to use our creative power not only to create new life, but also to shape the world according to God s purpose. As Christians, we recognize that gift and the daily challenge to choose the wise use of our creative and life-giving power. In our baptismal covenant we commit ourselves to Christ in lives of loving service, resisting evil and respecting others; this covenant serves as our guide. The Charge to the Candidates Celebrant By the grace of God you have lived through the pains and joys of childhood. Are you aware of God s gift to you and the challenge to use it wisely on your journey to adulthood? Candidates I am. Celebrant Let us join with these young people in reciting a portion of Psalm 139. Your works are wonderful, and I know it well. For you created my inmost parts; you wove me in my mother s womb. I praise you for I am awesomely created and marvelously made. Your works are wonderful, and I know it well. Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts; see if there is any hurtful way in me and lead me on the eternal path. The Prayer for the Parents Celebrant When Mary and Joseph searched for Jesus and found him in the temple, talking with the elders, they realized that he was a child no longer. So these parents stand watching their sons and daughters grow beyond childhood. Let us pray for them. O God, bless the parents of these young people. Rejoice with them as they celebrate this transition from childhood to adolescence. Strengthen them, that they may support their sons and daughters through these challenging years. Uphold these parents by the power of your Spirit, that they may be a comfort and support for their teenager, while leaving space for them to walk their own path. Carry them all safely through this journey, so that one day they may stand together as adults and friends, a joy and a comfort to each other all the days of their lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Charge to the Youth of Christ Church Celebrant Dear Christ Church Youth, as these young men and women move beyond the circle of their parents influence, they will need faithful companions, also navigating adolescence. Will you walk with them, knowing the importance of your Christian friendship and support? ALL Youth We will, with God s help. The Charge to the Congregation Celebrant We are beloved children of God, empowered by the Holy Spirit to bring all people into a loving, liberating, and life-giving relationship with Jesus. As a parish family, which spans the generations, will you share your knowledge and experience with these young people as they journey through adolescence? Congregation We will, with God s help.

5 The Blessing Celebrant Dear N.N., we bless you as you grow beyond childhood and journey forward, gaining the skills and experience you will need to assume full responsibility as an adult. Each candidate kneels before the Priest and is marked with the sign of the cross as the Celebrant prays Celebrant N., may Almighty God fill you with courage, wisdom, and joy. May Jesus Christ, your strong companion and never-failing friend, make you strong in faith and defend you on every side. May the Holy Spirit guide you in truth and peace; and the blessing of God rest upon you this day and for evermore. Amen. Once blessed, the Youth leave their parents and join the youth community. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
