Prelude Welcome Hymn Please stand For All the Saints 4 For all the saints who from their la bours rest, who thee by faith be fore the world con fessed, thy name, O Je sus, be for ev er blest. Al le lu ia, al le lu ia! For all the saints, who from their labours rest, Who Thee by faith before the world confessed, Thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia! Thou was their Rock, their Fortress and their Might; Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight; Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. Alleluia, Alleluia! O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; All are one in Thee, for all are Thine. Alleluia, Alleluia! And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, Steals on the ear the distant triumph song, And hearts are brave, again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia! 3
From earth s wide bounds, from ocean s farthest coast, Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, And singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost: Alleluia, Alleluia! Introduction Please remain standing The Invitation Please remain standing We have come together in the name of Christ to offer our praise and thanksgiving, to hear and receive God s holy word, to pray for the needs of the world, and to seek the forgiveness of our sins, that by the power of the Holy Spirit we may give ourselves to the service of God. This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Call to Worship Please sit or kneel Come to me, come to me, weak and hea vy la den; trust in me, lean on me. I will give you rest. Based on Matthew 11:28-29 Come to me, come to me, weak and heavy laden; trust in me, lean on me. I will give you rest. Confession Please remain sitting or kneeling 4 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1: 8-9 Friends in Christ, let us with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by God s infinite goodness and mercy.
Almighty and most merciful Father, We have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have broken your holy laws, We have left undone what we ought to have done, and we have done what we ought not to have done; therefore, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy on us pitiful offenders. Spare us, O God, when we confess our faults. Restore us who are penitent, according to the promises that you made to humanity in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may from this day forward live a godly, righteous, and modest life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen. Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desires not that sinners die, but rather that they may turn from their evil ways and live, has commanded and authorized his Ministers to assure his people that they will be forgiven when they repent of their sins: May God Almighty have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Responses Minister. Minister. O Lord, open up our hearts; and we will praise your holy name. O God, be quick to save us; O Lord, do not wait to help us. Please stand Minister. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Let us praise the Lord; We do with all our heart. 5
Venite (Psalm 95) Responsive Reading Please remain standing Psalm 43: 3-4 Send me your light and your faithful care, let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell. O come and sing unto the Lord; to God our voices raise. O Rock of our salvation, hear our joyful song of praise! Before God s presence let us come with praise and thankful voice; let us sing psalms to God with grace, with grateful hearts rejoice. Our God is great and reigns supreme above all power and might; God s hand still holds the depths of earth, the mountains breadth and height. The sea belongs to God alone who made both calm and storm, and from the Maker s mighty hand the dry land took its form. O come and let us worship God as to our knees we fall; we are God s people; God is Lord, the Maker of us all. Then I will go to the altar of God, to God, my joy and my delight. I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 6
The First Reading Please be seated Anthem Please remain seated 1 Corinthians 1: 4-13 Reader: 4 I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. 5 For in him you have been enriched in every way with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge 6 God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you. 7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. 8 He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, I follow Paul ; another, I follow Apollos ; another, I follow Cephas ; still another, I follow Christ. 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul? Here ends the first reading. Gaelic Blessing John Rutter Deep peace of the running wave to you, Deep peace of the flowing air to you, Deep peace of the quiet earth to you, Deep peace of the shining stars to you, Deep peace of the gentle night to you, Moon and stars pour their healing light on you, Deep peace of Christ the light of the world to you. 7
The Second Reading Please remain seated Jubilate Deo Please stand Sermon John 17: Reader: 20 My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one 23 I in them and you in me so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Here ends the second reading. Rejoice in God, all earthly lands and lift your hands in song and prayer. Delight to live by God s commands; sing joyful praises everywhere. Know this: we serve the Holy One, to whom our restless souls belong. We have our breath through God alone, to whom we raise our grateful song. Like sheep, we wander without aim unless our shepherd s voice is heard. In trust we call upon God s name for daily bread and gracious word. On God, our Maker, we depend for love that s gracious, strong, and sure. God s faithfulness shall never end; from age to age it shall endure. Orvin Lao, Lay Pastoral Associate You can also listen to the sermon again online at stpaulsbloor.org 8
The Apostles Creed Please stand Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Hymn Please remain standing Spirit of Heaven Spirit of Heaven, flood over me, forming Christ in all that I do. Turn every sinful desire in me into holy passion for You. Refrain: O, Spirit of God, come down, Let mercy and grace abound. My passionate prayer shall be: Christ in me. Spirit of beauty and holiness, Come refine with fire from above, Till I am cast in Your righteousness And I love the things that you love. O, Spirit of God Breathe Your forgiveness when darkness falls, And my heart is heavy with sin. Fill me with faith for the higher cause of the ceaseless praise of the King. O, Spirit of God 9
The Lord be with you; And with your spirit. Let us pray. Please sit or kneel to pray Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen. O Lord, show your mercy upon us And grant us your salvation. O Lord, save the Queen; And mercifully hear us when we call to you. Provide your Ministers with righteousness; And make your chosen people joyful. O Lord, save your people; And bless your inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord; And evermore mightily defend us. O God, make clean our hearts within us; And take not your Holy Spirit from us. The Collects Please remain kneeling or seated Lord God, our refuge and strength, the author of all godliness, hear the devout prayers of your church and grant that what we ask for in faith we may surely obtain, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 10
O God, the author of peace and lover of goodwill, the knowledge of whom provides us eternal life, the service to whom makes us free: defend us your humble servants in all assaults of our enemies; that, trusting in your protection, we may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O Lord our Heavenly Father, Almighty and Everlasting God, who has safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us with your mighty power, and grant that this day we neither fall into any sin nor run into any kind of danger; rather, govern and guide us at all times, so that we may do always what is right in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Hymn Please remain kneeling or seated Lord I Pray if Today Lord, I pray, if today someone wrongs or troubles me, Make me kind; bring to mind that forgiveness makes us free Prayers of Intercession Please remain kneeling or seated Each prayer will end with this response: Leader: Lord, I pray, if today joy should fill my heart with song, Help me raise thanks and praise for your goodness, sure and strong. Lord, I pray, if I stray, show the road I ought to take. When I fear, Lord be near; hear my prayer for your love s sake. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. 11
Leader: Leader: Almighty God, Father of all mercies, We your unworthy servants humbly and heartily thank you for all your goodness and loving kindness. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life, but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, by which we claim forgiveness and hope for eternal life. And we thank you for the gift of grace and the hope of glory. Give us, we pray, a sense of all your mercies so that we would be sincerely thankful, and full of praise in all that we say and do, by giving up ourselves to your service in a holy and righteous manner every day; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to you and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time to bring before you our common supplications, and you have promised that when two or three are gathered together in your name you will grant their requests. So, Lord, fulfill now the desires and prayers of your people in ways and to degrees that are best for us, granting us in this world knowledge of your truth and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. The Invitation The Offertory The Offertory provides an opportunity to regularly contribute to the work of God, as expressed through St Paul s. Our Vision is, by the power and grace of Jesus Christ, to be a transformative community for the city. As followers of Jesus we have the privilege to participate in and stewardship responsibility to support God s Kingdom ministry through the local church. You can give by: putting contributions in the offering plate that is passed around, setting up preauthorized giving, or giving online using either our website or app. Thank you for your generosity. 12
Offertory Anthem How Lovely are the Messengers Mendelssohn How lovely are the messengers that preach the gospel of peace. To all the nations is gone forth the sound of their words; throughout all the lands their glad tidings. How lovely are the messengers that preach the gospel of peace. (Romans 7:15,18) Offertory Prayer of Thanksgiving Please stand as the offering is presented Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Closing Prayers Holy and everliving God, by your power we are created and by your love we are redeemed; Guide and strengthen us by your Spirit, that we may give ourselves this coming week to your service, and live in love to one another and to you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Benediction Announcements Please be seated Hymn Please stand Forth in the Peace of Christ We Go 4 Forth in the peace of Christ we go; Christ to the world with joy we bring; Christ in our minds, Christ with our lips, Christ in our hearts, theworld's true king. Forth in the peace of Christ we go; Christ to the world with joy we bring; Christ in our minds, Christ on our lips, Christ in our hearts, the world s true king. 13
King of our hearts, Christ reigns in us; kingship with him his servants gain; with Christ, the Servant-Lord of all, Christ s world we serve to share Christ s reign. Priests of the world, Christ sends us forth this world of time to consecrate, our world of sin by grace to heal, Christ s world in Christ to re-create. Prophets of Christ, we hear his word: he claims our minds, to search his ways; he claims our lips, to speak his truth; he claims our hearts, to sing his praise. We are his Church, he makes us one: here is one hearth for all to find; here is one flock, on Shepherd-King; here is one faith, one heart, one mind. Dismissal Please remain standing Choir: Go forth in the name of Christ. Thanks be to God. Postlude 14
