Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Please be seated for Reading The Story Ezra 1:1-11 (NIV) In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah, the Lord moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and also to put it in writing: This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. Any of his people among you may go up to Jerusalem in Judah and build the temple of the Lord, the God of Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem, and may their God be with them. And in any locality where survivors may now be living, the people are to provide them with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with freewill offerings for the temple of God in Jerusalem. Then the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and Levites everyone whose heart God had moved prepared to go up and build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem. All their neighbors assisted them with articles of silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with valuable gifts, in addition to all the freewill offerings. Moreover, King Cyrus brought out the articles belonging to the temple of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had carried away from Jerusalem and had placed in the temple of his god. Cyrus king of Persia had them brought by Mithredath the treasurer, who counted them out to Sheshbazzar the prince of Judah. In all, there were 5,400 articles of gold and of silver. Sheshbazzar brought all these along with the exiles when they came up from Babylon to Jerusalem. At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God. The Gospel Reading Luke 4:21-30 Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Priest People In the synagogue at Nazareth, Jesus read from the book of the prophet Isaiah, and began to say, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, Is not this Joseph s son? He said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, Doctor, cure yourself! And you will say, Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum. And he said, Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet s hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. 4 The Homily Going Home: The Return Home Ruth Beresford Please stand for The Apostles Creed Celebrant Let us declare our faith in God: People I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. A member of the parish leads the prayers. The Prayers of the People O Lord, we pray for the whole church including all bishops, priests, and leaders. We especially pray for Bishop Kevin Brown and Presiding Bishop Michael Curry. We pray that our church grows in numbers and that more people realize the importance of spirituality and God s message. Thank you for Christ Church and our clergy, Ruth, Stephen, Ann, and Bill; our staff, Vestry, and our teachers. Please watch over us all and bless the things we do together as a congregation. Lord, O Lord, we pray for our nation and all the nations in the world. We pray for our President, Congress, and our state and county officials. Help them to work together to lead our nation to justice and peace. Break down the divisions and bring compromise, respect, and peace to our nation. Lord, O Lord, we pray for the earth. Help us to remember to protect our earthly home from pollution, especially plastic and oil in our oceans and holes in the ozone layer that harm our environment. May we continue to use our resources wisely, so that people all over the world will have access to clean water for drinking and bathing. Lord, O Lord, we pray for people who are impacted by natural disasters floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, and blizzards. We pray for all those impacted by wildfires, especially in California. Lord, O Lord, we pray for those who do not have food, shelter, or those who need a job. Be with all those who are affected by the recent government shutdown. We pray for those with addictions, especially to alcohol and heroin, and for all those who struggle with mental illness and suicidal thoughts. Protect the safety of our communities and our schools, especially from gun violence. We lift to you all the animals that are homeless and in need. Please help us to be mindful of treating our neighbors well and help us create a community known for friendship, kindness, and compassion. Lord, O Lord, we pray for healing and comfort for people who are sick, especially from the flu, cancer, diabetes, TB, and all other diseases. Be with those researchers and doctors working to cure these

5 Priest diseases. We pray for all who are sick or in need, and for those you lift in prayer. [silence] Lord, O Lord, we pray for those who have died. We especially lift up those who have died by suicide, homicide, or war. We also lift up our pets who have died. May they be accepted into God s eternal kingdom in heaven and rest in eternal peace. Lord, O Lord, we thank you for food, water, and all the necessities of life. We are grateful for our families, friends, and our pets who give us joy. We appreciate your giving us both public and private schools, homes, and a church where we can gather to worship God freely. We thank you for the life of Martin Luther King, whose message gives us a dream to dream. We give thanks for the blessing of eternal life. Lord, Together let us pray for the forgiveness of our sins. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace Priest People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. THE HOLY COMMUNION Being seated, we begin with a time of offering, giving money as a sign that our life serves God s purposes and showing our gratitude for God s many blessings. Amen. The Celebrant invites the People to say the prayer Jesus taught his first disciples. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread We sing the anthem at the breaking of the bread, which is Christ s Body, broken for us.
