WELCOME! Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we are glad you are with us today to join in the worship of God and to share in Christ s presence given to us in the sacrament of bread and wine. We hope you stay for what follows our worship this morning. You are welcome here. THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT MARCH 17, :00 AM HOLY EUCHARIST, RITE II GATHERING FOR WORSHIP As you entered church this morning, you were invited to select a stone; it will be used in our prayer of confession, then gathered, as the Lord God gathers our sins and offenses and redeems them by the power of the cross of Christ. During our worship, you are invited to hold the confession stone and consider the love of God that changes a heart of stone into a living heart, ready to love and serve in the Lord s name. In preparation, please keep silence. Voluntary My Jesus Leadeth Me Johannes Brahms ( ) Welcome and Announcements Christ Church Christiana Hundred Please stand, as able, and sing The Entrance Hymn 401 The God of Abraham Praise (blue) Hymnal 1982 The Opening Acclamation and Prayer Celebrant Blessed be the God of our salvation People Who bears our burdens and forgives our sins. Celebrant Eternal God, companion of all who seek you and seeker of all who turn away from you: Draw near to us that we may draw near to you, and grant us the grace to love and serve you, that we may find in your will our true freedom and blessing; through Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Amen. All sing Kyrie Music: From the Litany of the Saints; adapt. Richard Proulx (b. 1937) Copyright: Copyright 1985 GIA Publications, Inc.
THE WORD OF GOD Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Please be seated for The First Reading Genesis 15:1-12, The word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great. But Abram said, O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus? And Abram said, You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir. But the word of the Lord came to him, This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir. He brought him outside and said, Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them. Then he said to him, So shall your descendants be. And he believed the Lord; and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness. Then he said to him, I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess. But he said, O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it? He said to him, Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon. He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him. When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates. At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God. The Gradual Chant Please stand and sing the refrain twice through, both before and after the verse. Taizé Chant Refrain Verse In God is my safety and glory, the rock of my strength.
The Gospel is carried to the congregation so that we remember it is our Good News to hear and to share. The Gospel Reading Luke 13:31-35 Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Some Pharisees came and said to Jesus, Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you. He said to them, Go and tell that fox for me, Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Priest The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Once the Book of Gospels has returned to its place of honor, the People may be seated at the invitation of the preacher. The Homily Jesus: Determined Ruth Beresford Please stand for The Nicene Creed Celebrant Let us declare our faith in God: People We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. A member of the parish leads the prayers. The Prayers of the People Let us make our prayer to God. Holy God, we pray for the Church throughout the world; for Christians who are persecuted or tempted to deny God in their life; for this congregation, that we have courage to serve Christ faithfully, especially in N.; for all your holy people, that they may triumph over evil and grow in grace; in your mercy, Lord Sovereign God, we pray for our nation, for our president Donald, for the leaders of government in this, and every land, that they may be filled with your truth and serve your whole creation; in your mercy, Lord Sheltering God, we pray for N. and their ministry; defend the weary, guard the children, give refuge to the homeless, protect the powerless, and teach us your way of compassion; in your mercy, Lord Merciful God, we pray for those who are sick in body, mind, or spirit, especially N., and those we name now; that they may know your power to heal; in your mercy, Lord Eternal God, we pray for those who have died, especially N., and for the people who miss them; that your will for them may be fulfilled and that we may trust the power of Christ to save; in your mercy, Lord In you, Gracious and Everlasting God, we find our wholeness and strength. Hear the prayers of your people, offered in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. At the invitation of the Celebrant, please take your confession stone in your hands and kneel as able for The Confession of Sin Celebrant Let us pray. People Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The People stand as the confession stones are collected by our children and placed on the altar at the foot of the cross. The Celebrant announces God s forgiveness.
Priest The Peace Priest People Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. THE HOLY COMMUNION Being seated, we begin with a time of offering, giving money as a sign that our life serves God s purposes and showing our gratitude for God s many blessings. For those who give online or will text a contribution to (302) , a card is available in the narthex to participate when the offering plate is passed. Newcomers and guests may place the welcome card in the offering plate. Anthem Carson Cooman (b. 1982) O bone Jesu, miserere nostri, quia tu creasti nos, tu redemisti nos sanguine tuo pretiosissimo. O good Jesus, have mercy upon us, for thou hast created us, thou hast redeemed us by thy most precious blood. Please stand and sing The Presentation Hymn 144, vs. 1-3 Lord Jesus, Sun of Righteousness Hymnal 1982 The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise. from Common Worship (Church of England) The Celebrant continues the prayer, inviting our praise in the ancient song of the Sanctus. You send your Spirit to bring new life to the world, and clothe us with power from on high. And so we join the angels to celebrate and sing: Music: From New Plainsong; David Hurd (b. 1950) Copyright: Copyright 1985 GIA Publications, Inc.
The Celebrant continues the prayer, inviting our acclamation of Christ s sacrificial death and triumphant resurrection, saying Great is the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues the prayer, concluding For honor and praise belong to you, Father, with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit: one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Celebrant invites the People to say the prayer Jesus taught his first disciples. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread We sing the anthem at the breaking of the bread, which is Christ s Body, broken for us. Please be seated after the sacrament is presented. Music: From New Plainsong; David Hurd (b. 1950) Copyright: Copyright 1981 GIA Publications, Inc. All are welcome to receive the sacrament of Christ, kneeling or standing, either consuming the gluten-free bread and drinking from the cup or dipping (intincting) the bread carefully into the cup. If you are unable to come forward, ask an usher to let the clergy know.
Communion Hymn 143 The Glory of These Forty Days Hymnal 1982 Please stand for The Post-Communion Prayer Celebrant Let us pray. People God our help and strength, you have satisfied our hunger with this holy food. Strengthen our faith, that through the death and resurrection of your Son we may be led to salvation, for he is Lord now and forever. Amen. The Blessing May God our Redeemer show us compassion and love in the +blessing of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. All sing Hymn in Procession 150 Forty Days and Forty Nights Hymnal 1982 Dismissal Priest People Let us go forth in the name of Christ. Thanks be to God. We are sent forth to be Christ s blessing in the world. Our prayer is that today s worship has encouraged you in love, strengthened you for service, and filled you with grace. We look forward to your presence again in worship, in service to others, in learning and fellowship. Please return the children s activity bags as you leave the church but take our community announcements with you to learn of upcoming opportunities.
