Organ Prelude THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST JUNE 3, :30 PM ORGAN PRELUDE 5:00 PM CHORAL EVENSONG Louis Perazza, organist Prelude and Fugue in C Major (9/8), BWV 547 Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582 Please stand, as able, for The Procession Opening Sentences Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord, Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:2 The Lord is my strength and my song; he hath become my salvation. Psalm 118:14 Confession of Sin Officiant Christ Church Christiana Hundred Dear friends in Christ, here in the presence of Almighty God, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, so that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. WELCOME! Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we are glad you are with us today to join in the worship of God. This service comes to us from the traditional liturgies of prayer, where we listen for God s wisdom in the holy Word and pray for the world and its needs. You are welcome here. Please kneel. Officiant People Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. The Officiant announces God s forgiveness to give us new life and the blessing of peace. People Amen.

Please stand as the Officiant and Choir sing The Invitatory Bernard Rose ( ) O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall proclaim thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s name be praised. As the candles are lighted, the Choir sings The Phos hilaron: Hymn 24 The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, is Ended Please be seated as the Choir sings Psalm 103 Benedic, anima mea Chant: Ivor Atkins ( ) Praise the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, praise his holy Name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits; Who forgiveth all thy sin, and healeth all thine infirmities; Who saveth thy life from destruction, and crowneth thee with mercy and loving-kindness; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things, making thee young and lusty as an eagle. The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all them that are oppressed with wrong. He showed his ways unto Moses, his works unto the children of Israel. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy, long-suffering and of great goodness. He will not alway be chiding; neither keepeth he his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our wickednesses. For look how high the heaven is in comparison of the earth; so great is his mercy also toward them that fear him. Look how wide also the east is from the west; so far hath he set our sins from us. Yea, like as a father pitieth his own children; even so is the Lord merciful unto them that fear him. For he knoweth whereof we are made; he remembereth that we are but dust. The days of man are but as grass; for he flourisheth as a flow r of the field. For as soon as the wind goeth over it, it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the merciful goodness of the Lord endureth for ever and ever upon them that fear him; and his righteousness upon children s children; Even upon such as keep his covenant, and think upon his commandments to do them. The Lord hath prepared his seat in heav n, and his kingdom ruleth over all. O praise the Lord, ye angels of his, ye that excel in strength; ye that fulfill his commandment, and hearken unto the voice of his word. O praise the Lord, all ye his hosts; ye servants of his that do his pleasure. O speak good of the Lord all ye works of his, in all places of his dominion: praise thou the Lord, O my soul. Please stand. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Please be seated for The First Lesson Ecclesiastes 1:1-11 The words of the Teacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. What do people gain from all the toil at which they toil under the sun? A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains for ever. The sun rises and the sun goes down, and hurries to the place where it rises. The wind blows to the south, and goes round to the north; round and round goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns. All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they continue to flow. All things are wearisome; more than one can express; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, or the ear filled with hearing. What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it is said, See, this is new? It has already been, in the ages before us. The people of long ago are not remembered, nor will there be any remembrance of people yet to come by those who come after them. At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God. Please stand for The Magnificat from St. Paul s Service Herbert Howells ( ) My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Please be seated for The Second Lesson Luke 11:1-13 He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples. He said to them, When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial. And he said to them, Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him. And he answers from within, Do not bother me; the door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything. I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs. So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for a fish, will give a snake instead of a fish? Or if the child asks for an egg, will give a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him! At the conclusion the People respond, Thanks be to God.

Please stand for The Nunc dimittis from St. Paul s Service Herbert Howells Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, to be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. We profess the faith of the Church, singing The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Please kneel as the Officiant and Choir sing The Prayers The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Bernard Rose Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. All sing the Lord s Prayer in monotone. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. The Officiant and Choir sing O Lord, show thy mercy upon us; O Lord, save the state. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. O Lord, save thy people. Give peace in our time, O Lord. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And grant us thy salvation. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. And make thy chosen people joyful. And bless thy inheritance. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God, And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

Collects O God, whose never-failing providence ordereth all things both in heaven and earth: We humbly beseech thee to put away from us all hurtful things, and to give us those things which are profitable for us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. O God, who art the life of all who live, the light of the faithful, the strength of those who labor, and the repose of the dead: We thank thee for the timely blessings of the day, and humbly beseech thy merciful protection all the night. Bring us, we pray thee, in safety to the morning hours; through him who died for us and rose again, thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. O God, who dost manifest in thy servants the signs of thy presence: Send forth upon us the Spirit of love, that in companionship with one another thine abounding grace may increase among us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please stand and sing Hymn 709 O God of Bethel, by Whose Hand (blue) Hymnal 1982 Please be seated for The Welcome and Blessing of the Choral Pilgrims Ruth Beresford Anthem Herbert Howells When first thine Eies unveil, give thy Soul leave to do the like; our Bodies but forerun the Spirit s duty; true hearts spread and heave unto their God as flowers do to the Sun. Give Him thy first thoughts then; so shalt thou keep His company all day, and in Him sleep. Henry Vaughan ( ) Please kneel for The General Thanksgiving Officiant Almighty God, People Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. Orison Thomas Matthews ( ) Save us, O Lord, waking, guard us sleeping; that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.

The Officiant prays A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee, and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. Officiant The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen. II Corinthians 13:14 Please stand. After the Procession has passed, be seated for the remainder of the Voluntary.
